I use Windows XP, I find Vista too buggy and the chance that you run a virus is big. I have no experience with OSX or Linux.

I am at the side of competition!

    "still using XP?"

    What do you mean, "still"?

Of course. Vista just came out. Maybe in 2-3 years I'll use Vista, but for now, I have a super stable XP SP2 system in which ALL of my software works almost flawlessly. I keep my system clean and defragmented, and it runs exceptionally fast on my AMD Turion 1.8 system. Why would I want to experiment? My applications are much more important to me than the actual operating system, but a fully upgraded XP is pretty nice as it is.

I do have a bias though. I think an upgrade should work faster than what it's replacing on current hardware, not slower.

I really like Linux the only problem is many of the programs I use don't support Linux even through Wine so it really isn't an option. I do like it though. But for the OS I would actually use it is Vista. I don't knwo what everyone is talking about when they say it is slower than XP. If found the opposite to be true, especially with Superfetch, and a dedicated 1 gb Flash drive jsut for ReadyBoost. Often times I can get Photoshop CS2 up in six seconds! Everything about the OS flies for the most part, but I do agree that the drivers do have some issues. It took me a day or two to find a working audio driver, but past that even my new nvidia driver is pretty good, I can play FEAR almost as well as on my old XP Pro OS.

It's as simple as Twilight says, go download a version, and attempt to install it.

This Link may give you a basic idea as to what version is right for you. 12 months ago, I let it make the choice for me, and haven't switched from its recommendation yet.

If you do run across any issues, I'm sure the vast majority of those eight voters would jump at the chance to help you out.

I run Vista and XP, I've dabbled in Ubuntu and Red Hat. I'm still considering ditching Vista, but only because of my recent activation issues.

Hey, if you've got major problems with software only being limited to one OS...I'd suggest you check out VMWare. That way you could run your preferred OS and that one OS needed for that one pesky tool in parellel.

I voted Linux because it's my primary desktop. I have played with Vista at home, but I'm sticking with XP until later this year at work. Of course, I'm going to grab a Mac Mini sometime in the next year or so, just so I can get familiar with OS X. I guess you could say I sleep around, but I try to just stay familiar with Windows.

My primary Linux desktop is Arch, but I trial a lot of others. Recently that includes Ubuntu, Kwort, Zenwalk, Vector, SLED, and Dream. Right now I'm booted to Pardus, and soon I'll be demoing Sabayon, and both Fedora and Ubuntu again at next release.

So I guess it's hard to say I'm on a side, but generally I prefer open source versatility.

Two critters I didnt see in your poll, Win2K, and XP 64, which somewhat bridge the gap between Vista and XP. Though I rarely use my XP64 partition.
I voted XP. Until recently all my boxes were Win2k or Linux. The only compelling feature that XP has over Win2k SP4 is restore points. Everything else about XP I ended up turning off until I pretty much had Win2k ("classic"). I also dont like how annoying networking is in XP.
Vista, they think they are going to sell like 90 million units of that this year? And MS is predicting 90% migration by 09. good luck.

I didn't put Win2K in because it seems to be going the way of Win98(extinct to the mass pop). I didn't put in XP64 becasue it's a rare OS to be found by the average user.
as for Vista, until they fix all the compadibility issues, I won't be using it as a main OS. it's going to be a toy OS until I'm convinced that it's worth the switch.

WinXP is still leading the pack with 63 votes.

Recently acquired laptop came with...what else...Vista. After suffering for one month with sloooow start-up, shut-down, file-transfer, and constant hard drive activity, I replaced it with XP. Here are the pros and cons between the two.

    Vista

    PROS: looks pretty

CONS: slow start-up; slow file transfer; slow shut down; constant hard drive activity; commercial movies don't output through HDMI connection. absurd security procedure; software compatibility

    XP

CONS: don't look as pretty as Vista

PROS: none of the problems Vista has.

I voted Vista because my first laptop purchase game with it. Contrary to some of the posts here that seem to be about problems with Vista, I've had none. All the software I use runs perfectly, the laptop is quick to boot and memory allocation has been far better on my Vista laptop than it ever was on my XP based desktop. Visuals are very nice and have actually contributed well to the useability of my laptop. I don't get as fustrated at Vista than I did XP even with UAC!

Using XP on the laptop and desktop. I'm intrigued by Linux (your evangelism has worked!) and may give that a try. My laptop is Vista capable, but I see no need to switch.

Vista here. I only had a few problems that were solved very easily. UAC was annoying, so I turned it off. Vista seems much better at using all your hardware. Everything pops open instantly and scrolls smoothly. I did a clean install with the Vista upgrade and it seems faster than XP did on the same machine. T7200, 2GB ram. It does take a little bit to be comfortable with the fact that Vista caches all of the ram you aren't using at any given moment so it isn't rare to have less than 50mb of free ram. However, if it wasn't for the free upgrade I'd still be running XP as I don't find it worth it to go buy an OS for a computer that already came with one.

Not quite yet... there's still a quite a few Windows 2000 users around. You'd be surprised by how many. I bet a lot of schools and businesses have stuck with it for two reasons:

    1) It works. Why switch again?
    2) If it works, why would they want to buy XP licenses for each computer?

I use XP Pro, XP Media Center, and Vista, on 3 different rigs. I have also used OSX.

So far, I am terribly pleased with Vista. My XP Pro computer is very stable, and pretty quick. I have no complaints with it at all. My Media Center rig, while almost brand new, has been a complete hassle. It is unstable as hell, the MC player is invasive and annoying. I just don't like it. My MAC... well, let's just say I won't be buying another Mac anytime ever... uhhh, soon I mean.

With all that said, I voted Vista. I have only had 1 issue with compatibility (NHC). The load speeds are lightning fast. The appearance is very fresh, and sexy. Simple functions like the explorer search are excellent. The system has been as stable as my XP Pro rig, on SP2. That is why I gave it the nod. It took MS to SP2 to get Pro straightened up. So far Vista has been as stable as my current XP Pro SP2 rig... so how good will it (Vista) be at SP2?

    Plus it just looks sexy.

some of you guys might be too young to remember that big hub bub when XP came out. How even if you paid for a full install the license was tied to only installing it on one computer. Before then the laissez faire situation was that win NT/2000 required a license per computer(but few tok it seriously) and win 95/98 were not really enforced re licenses. Win 2k has pretty much all the functionality of XP without the DRM or verification. The only difference I get going from one to the other is restore points, and XP has lamer networking, but better wireless.

Sadly, I remember that all, and I even bought a computer with ME on it

XP was laden with problems when it was first delivered. I even reverted back to ME it was so bad. That is why I say, I am pleased with Vista right now, as it is really pretty well worked out.

I owned a Commodore VIC 20, and a Commodore 64, if that makes you feel any better. Yes, I owned a computer when Windows and MAC OS were merely dreams. I also was the big stuff, and I had the external tape drive. Yes, it used an audio cassette for data. :p

    I too owned 2 95s ( I still have a 98 rig) and even an NT rig.

Big 5 inch floppys. They were so groovy.

just to go further OT, I first messed around on a TRS80 (radio shacks own computer!) Then later the Apple II and TI994a. I finally got my own computer in the early 80's. An awesome almond-beige with brown keys Atari 800. The ram was on cartridges half the size of a DVD case. You had two cartridge slots. One for basic, another for programs. You also had 5 1/4" floppys and tape drives. I think there was an 40mb hardrive that came out eventually.
Later I got a Mac plus 512k(still have) and a few other Macs (II ci, 8100, etc) I switched over to windows shortly after win 95 came out. It was far cheaper to keep up with the joneses on a PC. And they were faster than macs. And the games (descent not withstanding) were better. Rise of the Triad!
