I've had Vista for about 2 weeks now (Home Premium on my newly-delivered Dell E1505). For about the first 4 days or so I was really considering putting XP on it.

Right when I got it, the first thing I did was reinstall Vista to remove Dell's bloatware. Then I started checking stuff out. REALLY annoyed by all the security features. Had to turn everything off (UAC, Defender, etc.).

Incompatibility with a few things here and there has been annoying. USB drives and keyboards have this quirk of having to be installed every time you put them into a new USB slot (like if you've been using your keyboard just fine on USB1 but then take it out and insert into USB2, you have to search your hard drive for the drivers again). On XP it was similar, but a friggin' Microsoft Brand keyboard would just install itself, not MAKE YOU DO IT. And I've never had to install a USB key drive on XP, but Vista made me search for drivers to do this. Funny thing is, the USB key drive is a Microsoft promotional item from CES 2007 with a huge Windows logo on it and http://get.live.com on the back.

Pretty annoying when even Microsoft doesn't just WORK.

I've had a few problems with programs just completely locking up my system where I'm forced to restart with the power button (after waiting 5-10 minutes). I've had to reboot this way dozens of times now. XP didn't do this.

    BUUUUUUTTTT

Once you get all the User Control garbage shut down and get all your hardware properly installed and figure out what programs and/or hardware you can and can't use (until Vista patches and/or drivers are released), Vista is a great OS and does, in fact, outshine XP.

    Me for Vista.
Yes, there are a few incompatibility issues, but none that has really bothered me so far.
The fantastic appearance itself makes up for any minor bugs.
In retrospect, i find xp mundane and boring.
I don't want to return to xp, and lose the beautiful interface,to get 1 or 2 programs working. No way.

Vista will win hands down if u conduct this poll a few months after Santa Rosa arrives.

Vista has a few good features but not enough for me to switch from XP, which Ive tweaked to as minimal as possible. Tried running linux and BSD but no gaming kinda sucks, not a hardcore gamer but I do like to play the occasional multiplayer. So I voted for XP.

    Vista for me!
and as soon as I figure out why it won't use our dial-up connection (yes, I know it's slower than a turtle walking through glue, but it's not like we have a choice out here in the wilderness) I'll probably never go back to XP.

Well I just helped a family member set up their new Vista Basic rockin Toshiba.

I learned several things, first there was a tone of bloatware, second 512mb of RAM doesnt go well with any version of vista, and finally that damn thing kept popping up anytime I clicked on something asking me to confirm.

i now know i will not be upgrading to vista at least until SP1 is released.

Ubuntu 6.10 for everything except most games. Then I surrender and reboot into XP.

Vista is a waste. Save your $$ and buy more RAM.

Granted it isn't all that great at the moment but as soon as they release SP1 it should blow XP out of the water.

    Xp.
Vista is too buggy and system hogging.
Linux just isn't practical for a gamer/typical user.
OSX i love but the mac hardware prices are just rediculous compared to a similar Windows based PC.

Chose XP but if mac prices came down i'd switch to OSX in a heartbeat.

Using Business here. No complaint about speed or any slowdown at all. Everything is fast and stable. The search function is really handy.

To me Vista is refreshment of the 5 years old XP's blue bars. It is nice they have come up with different default color scheme. The Aero is really pleasing to the eyes, you better choose high resolution screen (you can always adjust the DPI settings). And i am a big fan of black, in terms of people and colors :) .

XP still leads with 135. I think it is safe to say that until all the bugs are worked out of Vista that XP will reamain the dominant choice of OS.

I was a Mac user for many years, but eventually, I couldn't afford Apple hardware anymore.... so I went to Win95, then 98, then XP. The software for Macs isn't exactly cheap either. Nice computers, for sure, but what can you really do with a Mac that you can't do much more cheaply with a Windows-based computer (not to mention that Windows is quite a good platform for open source software nowadays).

But at any rate, why does one have to choose "a side". It's just a computer, not a religion or lifestyle choice. Within the Windows world, why does one have to choose a side between XP and Vista? Vista is fine if you have it and it works for you, and XP is fine too. XP won't be an abandoned product for more years than the useful, expected life of your current laptop anyway, and it's still a legitimate, supported MS product.

I think that Microsoft is about the .NET platform now anyway. It runs on both XP SP2 and Vista, and if you ever do move to Vista, it's still a .NET platform. Even Linux is increasingly a viable .NET platform, so it's not like you're making an irrevocable choice by using XP that automatically obsoletes you.

Right now, I'm a satisfied Windows user. I'm satisfied because I know what really depending on a desktop Linux can be like. I've been there. But on the other hand, I really only use Windows as what it is, an operating system. This doesn't mean all my software has to be MS too, and it isn't. I use Mozilla products, OpenOffice, The Gimp (very nice on Windows, by the way), an Apache server, My SQL, Notepad++, Kompozer, FileZilla, etc. , plus some great Windows-specific software like Irfanview, Paint.NET, and MS's own Visual Studio Express editions and the free SDK for .NET. That's a lot of power under my fingers, and it doesn't really matter what the underlying engine is. No way I'm going to spend a dime to upgrade an existing computer just so it can run Vista, but I'll gladly take Vista pre-installed on my next computer, whenever the time comes.

well, now that things have settled down I suppose the "sides" have become less of anything meaningful. I was just me trying to be creative with the title to this thread in the first place anyways.

in keeping with my tradition here are the standings as of now:
Win XP takes the lead as it has so far with 154 and OSX is still trailing in the rear with 19. Of course these results are not entirely acurate but if nothing esle it gives me something to think about when I'm bored.

XP until Vista either lowers sys requirements, improves battery life, or comes with some cool add-ons via Winupdate or service packs. Till then, I'm on XP with no regrets.

I voted for vista simply because my latest laptop purchase came with it. Honestly if I could have still gotten a new computer with xp I would have. Vista is growing on me though. I am relatively a novice as far as computers go and am still having trouble identifying the bloatware and how to turn off certain things so that it will run faster. I am not happy with how slow it runs when loading up. I know that norton doesn't help that much but surely there are some things I can turn off to improve my speed a bit. Any suggestions? :)

a fresh install is my suggestion. most of the bloatware is from the laptop manufacturer. asus is renouned for the crap they put on. however if you don't want to do this, or don't know how to back up your stuff etc. it would be a bit hard to start telling you what to remove without knowing what is running.

I own one 3 XP machines(2 desktops, 1 laptop) and 1 vista machine. I got the Vista one 2 days ago, and so far have gotten ZERO use out of it(spent a solid 6 hours trying to manipulate it in a way that would increase boot times and stability, but i end up getting a BSOD when i reboot... not even touching the registry and only disabling services i know are safe to disable)

I get the feeling i'll continue using my XP machines a LOT more often then my vista.
