This may be of interest to Vista Home users…

OK! The free WD branded version of Acronis True Image worked for me to make a working clone of my three partition drive.

Seagate users get the same program from your respective site.

I’m using Vista SP2 32 bit, no raid, in my ageing Gateway. I continue to make file backups, however if my 250 Gig drive goes south, it’s really nice to pop in spare $40 drive with all programs/games tweaked and ready in 5 minutes! Boot CD not required..Yes!!

I used am old Passport drive and my Thermaltake Drive Dock using eSata cable. 234Gig clone required 5 hours from start to finish. Acronis uses easy Windows interface but reboots into DOS for actual cloning.

YMMV! Check Acronis site for Vista 64 bit or Windows 7 for issues.

    From post 1:

Clone Drive Light-weight ISO mounter. The website says it's supported up to XP only, so be wary of running on Vista.

CloneDrive mounts the image but the files in the image are read only.
Im actually looking for one that mounts a virtual drive which is an image on the HDD.
Something like what Virtual PC uses (.vhd) but that they could be mounted as a regular drive. Not a virtual CD drive.

thanks for the reply by the way :)

I have a suggestion. It's called 'My Lockbox' ( http://www.fspro.net/my-lockbox/). It allows users to lock a folder with a password. Once the folder is locked, it is hidden and cannot be accessed until it is unlocked. Very very easy to use program, and its free!

    This is a long list...

I didn't see it scanning through - I have no idea how good or bad it is, but its mentioned as imaging software in a German newspaper - it may be of interest.

Indeed it is a long list, and is still expanding! One thing I'm working on is reorganizing the list to make finding applications easier. I hope to have it (finally) done within the next few days.

For all the people that posted new items in the past month or so, I will be updating the list this weekend with the new entries. Thanks to everyone's contributions!

Here's a little app I find useful. It's simply called "ReNamer" (available from the developer here: http://www.den4b.com/projects.php).

It's a simple, light weight program that allows you to quickly define rules for batch renaming files (cutting characters, changing extensions, serializing, etc.). It also lets you save previously defined sequences of changes as presets so you can apply them often. I've yet to find anything that fulfills the same functions with so many options with so little complication.

the built in zip is great, until you run into something that is not a zip file (such as a .rar). Zipeg has worked on every archive format I have found without a hitch.

Boxee ( beta) should be on the list, especially since it just got a new interface change from the alpha.

So should VMware Player. I find it runs virtual os's faster and easier to set up virtual os's in than in Virtualbox. Plus, it supports eye candy like aero interface.

How can Adobe Reader Lite be "Editor Pick" and Foxit Reader not. Adobe Reader Lite is indeed smaller and faster than the original Adobe Reader but it is still way bigger and slower than Foxit Reader,

Well, size and speed aren't always key points - there are other things like ease of installation (tends to be painless nowadays - but sometimes you need to watch out for junk toolbars...) and ease of use etc.... functionality...

First off... nice avatar Bane, ready for 4.0...

    now for the question:
I know what my options are and have used many of the Chat clients listed, but after a fresh install, im having trouble deciding which to use (AIM, Digsby, Trillian, Pidgin, etc). i would like peoples' opinions on which program they think is the best and why i should choose it. Im looking for something thats not resource heavy, but at the same time offers a decent amount of customization. any PM's/replies would be appreciated :)

Here is a tested (on XP) utility that allows you to monitor your Internet usage/bandwidth. Previous versions of this work, but are buggy.

Version 1.5.2873 is the link I am giving and the proper download page.

FreeMeter is difficult to find on the Net ( proper Internet usage one) with links that still work.

I have been using this little utility now for around 48 hours and I can confirm that it is bang on with it's stats. I am very impressed...especially cause it's free and works really well.

    Here is the linky:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/fre...er_v1.5.2873/FreeMeter_v1.5.2873.zip/download

    Click direct link to download.

Compressed file size is around 48KB only.

    Enjoy :D :)

On that note, one might also add NetLimiter Monitor 2. I've been using it on XP Home SP3 and it's been pretty cool and stable. You can see what processes are eating bandwidth at this very second and also look at a stat view by various time periods (hourly, daily, monthly, etc).

I haven't tested uninstallation and I don't know the status of Vista or 7 compatibility.
