Any recommendations for a driver update program ala DriverMax but without a daily driver download restriction?

    He?
Most AVs will want to scan all files after they have been installed - simply because you do not know how good or bad the previous one was.

Microsoft Security Essentials is one of the best out there for free.

FYI the reason DVD Decryptor isn't updated is because it was replaced by imageburn (same developer I think) so you can just remove that... since it's an old version of an already listed program

Search Application - small and lightweight - From their webpage: ""Everything" is an administrative tool that locates files and folders by filename instantly for Windows. Unlike Windows search "Everything" initially displays every file and folder on your computer (hence the name "Everything")."

Can I get some suggestions on backup and recovery software? I've just got a new external HDD and wanted to use it solely for my weekly backup. Should I just use the built-in Win7 utility?

Also, does the Win 7 utility allows for the individual saving/ updating of files? Or, does it backup everything everytime?

    Thanks

Lots to choose from i must say. I would say use the build-in Windows 7 Backup & Restore (using it myself as well). Or you could try an utility like easeus todo backup home which has some more features (encryption, compression etc.) AND is FREE.

I've had great success with Macrium Reflect. It's awesome for doing full system images. I don't think the free version has automatic backups enabled, but it's a great tool none-the-less. It even allows you to create recovery disks so you can clone your backup onto another hard-drive if required.

Edit: As hxkclan suggests, Windows 7's own backup is great too. Windows 7 Home Premium does file backup only, but Professional and Ultimate can do system images too. I kind of wonder why Microsoft chooses to split those two apart though.

    UPDATE

Postbox is out of the beta and is version 2 now, but it's not free anymore.
But there is new free Postbox express

Also, there a new cool FTP manager - Cyberduck, originally designed for mac and now ready for Windows.
Althoguh it asks for donation to get read of donation ntification, so I'm not sure if it fits here.

Microsoft Mathematics 4.0 has helped me a lot and is not on the list.
-equation solving, graphing calculator, a lot of other math tools built in.

Macrium Reflect is the tool of the devil... Lost about 2 days of work when I had to restore my drive and it turned out I couldn't because of some random issue the program had... easeus todo backup is much better imo..

and the issue windows backup is that it doesnt compress very well if at all... but it does work if you have the same sized drive you are backing up

And a windows system image will work on any drive that's larger than the size of the image itself.

I assumed they are talking about the built in Windows Image Backup.

That was not true in Vista, image size had nothing to do with it, it had to be the same size hard drive or larger, or the restore would stop with an error. As far as I know this did not change in W7.

Other 3rd party image software such as Acronis can restore to a smaller drive if the image will fit size wise.

    I thought I'll post a gain....

    From the original post:
-> Version one is an RC release that is stable.
Version 2 is an Alpha Release that is pretty stable but not bug free nowadays.

It is actually what I am using for my final year project - on that note: the pdf files on work well on computers, they don't work well with pocket readers.

I tried that once but did not like it. If one program fails to install you need to run the whole installation once again... and I just don't see the point. I usually keep the up to date installations of programs I use on my HDD but it doesn't really help me have them all in one installation pack - some get outdated, others not... just messy :-/
