There is one problem I see with it:

It doesn't include all options for a particular "application" - e.g. there is no dedicated ICQ client and the Vista Codec Pack isn't offered either. (a very good and highly recommended one for Vista).

Now I can see why they can't include everything - there is just too much of it, but it automatically results in limitations which mean I might as well install programmes manually.
Additionally, not all programmes on offer are freeware as far as I can see, which really limits the use of it to people who know what they want.
I.e. it isn't ideal if you just want to try another app because you will have no idea in advance whether is costs or not.

The list of the software are the different that performed the growing of the windows and the window will be updated depends on the updates that are available in the internet or the any other place.

Hi KarenA,

Q: Since you are using these 2 proggies, couldyou tell me if they can "Coexist" side-by-side or would they conflict with one another!?!?
Basically can I have them both installed on my Vista x64 and use them alternately ... as needed!?!!?

Thanks,

G! :)

You can use them side by side -> but Orbit seems to be a bit dubious in my eyes, trying to offer you "updates" to existing software that don't officially exist...

-> You really only need one download manager (if you need one) anyway.

Hi DetlevCM,

Appreciate the Help and your response.

DetlevCM, the reason I wanted to see if the two could run side-by-side was because Orbit has been pretty good for what I want to do ... HOWEVER, I also noticed something Fishy about it after Version 4.0.5 (or 4.0.0.5 as some places have it) ... so, I never bother to upgrade from that version on ...

Thanks again!

G! :)

Not exactly. True, ImgBurn was written by the same author, and has some of the same functions, but DVD Decrypter has a lot of functions not provided in ImgBurn.

Ok I found this free software.

EMDB- Eric's Movie Database.

Its great for archiving your films and setting them out like a bookshelf, It uses IMDB for all the infoe regarding the film and a few different websites for covers.

Totally free totally ad free totally awesome! I have been using for a fair while now and I love it! It beats scrolling through folders trying to find what to watch!

Wow that does look snazzy. I have done basically the same thing with a program called Thumbgen for my WDTV unit I get cover art, synapsis, rating, format, length, data info etc an da background but its only for the WDTV interface. This would be a good way to have something similar on my PC so I will check it out.

I imagine it takes some work to get setup initially depending on file names and metadata and such.

My free program of the day is SubRip... because I had to go find it yesterday to rip an anime dvd to my computer and since its dual audio I needed the subs. I do not like vobsubs so what subrip does is use OCR to read the dvd vobsubs and convert them into text so you can have much more control on how they look and format.

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Subrip

May be making a new video encoding tutorial soon and converting dvd image based subs to text will be a part of it.

Just downloaded this and like it a lot, seems good.

Couple of things, just wondering if anyone knows if there is anyway to select which player a video launches from, and is it possible to group videos together , say, for a TV series.

Update: Couldn't find anything on the above on the help part, so I've emailed them. Would make the software even better if it had these features.

I couldn't find any option to select which player to launch it with or to group stuff together. I wish it had those features too. But seems this is not like a full version. To get the full version with <your name> movie database, you've got to pay for it.

-> try Paint.Net or suffer through GIMP (which on Windows at least has its issues)

I was trying to find a good webcam software. This is what I came up with.

Debut: free and very good webcam software. Has plenty of settings to change for good quality. It can do pictures and videos. Better than YouCam. Doesn't have the gimmicky animations that try to compare to Photobooth.

Probably not recommended for desktop screencasts but good for making pics/vids of yourself.

Hi folks,

Looking at the 1st page for a "PDF Printer" that has No Adware or Spyware and is Solid (works every time) ... I saw Three that I like you folks opinion or votes ...

I will be using it to print web pages with a write up that I like or print some word doc as PDF and so forth. ButI see some of them even offer more capabilities like merging PDFs or Splitting them. Even I see some offer Password Protection!

Which of the following would you is the "Best" ... I am numbering them so you can vote them in order that you like. I am hoping folks that have acually used them to chime in ...

These are not in any special order ...

1) CutePDF
2) Primo PDF
3) doPDF

BTW, if you know of another one that has not been mentioned, please share that with me.

Thanks,

G! :)

I have been using CutePDF for a long time now and it's great. The Pro version is worth it, too.

For splitting and merging PDFs, the best in my opinion is PDF Split and Merge

Cheers

I use PDFcreator. It is very simple and it's free even for commercial use (important in my case since I use it at work, even though we have expensive Adobe products which take 10x the time to do the same).

Just wanted to say Dexpot is amazing. Not sure why more people aren't taking advantage of desktop virtualization. It used to be good, but it's really been improved since the last time I saw it. It integrates with windows 7 nicely, and using the dexgrid plugin, you get that linux like 4-way desktop grid that is such a pleasure to use in the new ubuntu unity, especially if you set up convenient hot keys.

If you have 1366 x 768, it should be your best friend. And even if you have a full 1080p, if you're only using a single monitor, it's so darn handy.

Hi folks,

@ FondueKid ... Thanks for the feedback withCutePDF and Sharing of PDF Split and Merge Link. BTW, I love your AV ... I might have to borrow the colors. :D

@ HerrKaputt ... Thanks for PDFCreator suggestion. Hey Herrkaputt ... What Version are you using!?!?
BTW, I think I saw a long time ago something about PDFCreator using Adware or something about Snooping or something to that effect! Have you experienced anything like that with the version that you are using?

Appreciate the Help again!

gonwk, I'm using the latest version on this computer, but I've always used it in a "fire-and-forget" manner: I install whichever version is on the SourceForge website and I never need care again. I'm pretty sure my laptop, which has an older OS installation, has also an older version of PDFcreator which works just as well. I've been using it for a few years now, and it has always been lightweight yet reliable, which is how I like my programs.

I have experienced zero ads from PDFcreator. I highly doubt it has adware bundled into it since it is open-source software. Perhaps you are confusing it with some other software? Or maybe the installer prompts you to install a Toolbar such as Google or Yahoo or whatever -- I always pay attention and disable those things.

I also thinl there is a software called virtual clone drive for mounting isos, but I might be wrong.

PS: it is difficult for me to checl the first post on a mobile, so you need to read through it yourself.

For mounting I've always used MagicDisc, never had any issues with it, lightweight and easy to use.

Mount ISO Files - Freeware MagicDisc Download

If your using windows 7, it has an inbuilt ISO burner, just double click the ISO and go from there.

How about Free Launch Bar for some organization of your taskbar ? :)

Free Launch Bar • Free replacement for standard Quick Launch

and a real basic and to the point description and reviews at cnet.

Free Launch Bar - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

I have my taskbar set up so than the first 1/4 of it is quick launch of the items I use most of the time. Firefox, thunderbird, skype etc etc. Then the rest of the taskbar is using the free launch.

In the free launch I have 7 menus and 2 shortcuts. Menus are Apps, games etc etc, System etc.. the two shortcuts are downloads and stuff. What's nice about them is you click on them and they open the folder or in the case of downloads the drive. You can also drag items from the desktop to the shortcut icons in the taskbar and it will copy them to the folder/drive.

Using it on my desktop in win67 64bit and it works great. Going to install on my notebook and netbook soon.

Can I suggest Poddox (Link) for media management?

I don't own an iPod but when someone else in the house who owns one wants me to put a song on their iPod, it's been great to be able to download such a small program to do it instead of having to download iTunes (I abhor iTunes).

Hey all,

Here is another great free software, I did search and I think it may have been highlighted in this thread BUT Im sure it will be ok to add again.

Batterybar pro is good if you would like to help monitor your battery in depth.

Here is the free version to try first, It has some useful tools for alerting you about current state and also to help maintain a good routine of care.

A few programs I use daily since I upgraded my office workstation to Windows 7....

Shell Folder Fix

ShellFolderFix - Manage folder window positions/size - Windows 7 Forums

I use dual monitors and this keeps the folders where they were last used.

Coolbarz

Coolbarz

Basically a self hiding launchpad for the folders I open everyday.

RBTray

RBTray

For those times when you want to play Angry Birds at work and want to minimize it (or any window) to the taskbar simply right click on the minimize icon.

Dual Monitor

Dual Monitor Taskbar | Free software downloads at SourceForge.net

Pretty basic and simple taskbar for my second monitor. I used to use zbar but it kept crashing.

Agent Ransack

http://mythicsoft.com/page.aspx?page=download&type=agentransack

This is my default go to search application.

Classic Shell

http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/

I don't care for Windows 7 default programs list.

I searched and didn't find these listed in the thread yet.

I checked, and it looks like nobody has mentioned 7 Sticky Notes in here. If you like to have those little Post-It notes on your desktop, and you want something a bit more powerful than Win7's built-in Sticky Notes (and without that useless taskbar icon needlessly taking up space), you should give this a try. I found this today after finally having had enough of that Sticky Notes taskbar icon, and this little program really is the bee's knee. Tremendously useful, with tons of built-in functionality, including the option to add file attachments to your sticky notes by simple drag-and-drop, alarms, multiple desktops for your sticky notes, a notes manager, etc., etc.
