Thanks xenon2k9! Added to the list.
-
BamBam, I think you should add an "[Editor's Pick]" tag with an explanation and remove the "(Added January 2nd)" thing you put there. This list is pretty big and for new people I think they should have something to guide them as to what might most likely be the software they are looking for.
-
That is a great idea. It might take some time to work this out with the list, as I'm working on overhauling the look and feel of it. The "date added" parts will be removed, as that doesn't really seem useful anymore (to me at least).
-
Does anyone know if it is possible to tweak the volume settings in Mozilla Songbird so it can be a bit louder? Even KM Player is a bit louder than Songbird which I personally prefer. Thanks a lot.
Or is it just my Lenovo? -
No there is not, I have tried myself, but there is no EQ available.
-
I would like to suggest:
Jalbum: Jalbum is a free gallery software that creates personalized web albums of your digital pictures.
http://jalbum.net/software -
Added! Thanks!
Also added XRECode, which has a bunch of audio encoders allowing you to convert your music into practically any format you could ever dream of. (thanks martee for the link!)
Also, I removed the dates that new additions have been added to the list, as they only add clutter to the list rather than helpfulness. I soon hope to have a revamped look for the whole list as well to make finding and looking at it much more pleasant. -
Hi All, I just added the following to the list. Hopefully you'll get better results than I did.
Repair My Word
Free tool to recover text from corrupted Word files. I tried to recover a Word 2007 document, but all it could do was recover the plain text in the file. At least I could use that to re-do the document, though that was not fun by any means. I have not tried this with any older Word documents, so I'm not sure on if it works as advertised yet. -
I use this defragger, it works pretty well

how does this fare against tune up utilities defrag? -
Added! On the website it says that it supports Windows 7, which is good for those early adopters using Windows 7 as their main OS. It even supports Windows 2000 for those that just won't give up the old-school stuff.
-
I can't say, I've only compared it with defraggler and auslogics disk defrag. I find that this one is slower than disk defrag (fair margin) and defraggler (much smaller margin) but the system is quicker overall.

Thanks! I tried this out last night actually. It's very well done, and makes me very tempted to pay for the pro version. The free one has lots of goodies in it to make it worthwhile to have. If you have tons of icons on your desktop, this is the app to get!
-
I can't stand 3d desktop environments. They seem so inefficient and useless.
IDK if this has been submitted yet (im not going skulking through 41 pages) but filezilla is awesome.
It's an FTP client with a lot of added features. anyone who uses ftp and doesn't have this should look into it. -
File Zilla is already on the list actually... under Productivity/FTP Clients. Thanks anyway.
On the subject of 3d desktop environments, I think they're a step in the right direction to (finally) shake up the desktop experience. Far too long desktop's have had no pizzazz, and made organizing icons rather tedious. BumpTop actually has tools to organize your icons and give your desktop a fresh look. Other tools are out there that help in the desktop organization scenario, one of which is Stardock's Fences. That is pretty handy as well. -
Hello People,
Long time
Been going through some tough times.. Anyway.
Hey there Crash, Gary, Stewie, ATG, DBAM, McGrady, Phil, Shyster, Baserk, Chaz and all buddies...
Good to see you all again (though I might disappear for a few weeks again.. but I can never leave..
Anyway, I have a quick question. A fr got a iPod Nano. I want to know if there is any free, easy to use file transfer program for transferring files between the computer (Windows XP/Vista) and the iPod? Something along the lines of iShuffle. I did search around and found quiet a few of them like gtkpod, sharepod, Amarok etc. But I am not sure which one is the best, trouble free, easy to use. My fr is not a comp savvy person. So I would prefer giving her something very simple, efficient and easy to use. Can someone please let me know?
Thanks in advance.
PS., I decided to post this question in this thread, since I thought I might find the info on the free softwares here. Sorry if this is not the right place. -
Dbam...Has anyone ever suggested adding:
PowerDVD9.0 to the list for freeware?
As a nice Media Player for DVDs, etc?? it's a great application!
PowerDVD allows you to playback DVDs on your computer. CyberLink's second-generation dynamic video technology (CLEV-2) delivers DVD movies with greater luminance and more natural colors. Intelligent frame-by-frame analysis produces ultra-smooth DVD playback by eliminating ghosting, feathering, and other elements.
- Experience the best in video and audio entertainment
- Feel the vibes with true home theater DTS and Dolby audio
- Maximize your Notebook's on-the-road performance
- Get the smartest movie playback features available
- Connect to your UPnP Network and playback media files

Is that freewre Cin?
Isn't it just Shareware - i.e. a trial version?
Or does it continue to work like WinRAR? -
It is a 30 day Trial Vers., but I believe you can download again.

-
@Cin': While PowerDVD is a great app to have, it's not freeware and therefore cannot be added to the list.
@fonduekid: No worries on posting that little bit there. I'll put on the 'Wishlist' section that your looking for an application of that sort. -
I know, I thought about that after I asked to have it added..it's too bad..its a great application..
Oh well
It's nice trialware though!

Thank You.
Yesterday, I got in SharePod and tried it. I must accept its a great app (though there were other' like YamiPod and such, which I didn't try.. may be I will some time, just to see how they are!). But yeah, Sharepod is a nice, handy, easy to use application. Works well, no issues.
PS., another useful link -
Thanks fonduekid for those. I added Sharepod and Yamipod to the list, but the others are purely for the Linux platform so I can't add those to the list. This spawned a new sub-section under the Media section, cleverly entitled "Media Managers".
-
Nice to see you pop in for a bit founduekid! Hope things are going well
-
Tell me what you want, ill make it. Lol.
Most people on here wont use this, but, good conceptual drawing program, its fun (no undo button though):

Is there a free and light optical disk burning software that can use Lightscribe?
-
hey guys. what i am wondering is if there is a program that will monitor your bandwidth usage on a rolling 30 days.that will also show you what is dropping off from 30 days back?
-
Hi Bond,
I am not sure if I understand your Q correctly ... but if all you need a great DVD Burner sw and CD Burner ... the 2 mentioned on Page 1 are the BEST.
I only use ImgBurner for all my DVD Burns! Personally have not used CDBurnerXP but I have heard nothing but the best about it ... and it works on Vista!
If you need a sw for Lightscribe burning ... you can download it from here for FREE ...

Hope this has Helped!

Sorry for really late replies, been busy with work lately.
P905i.
I have to pick the resolution, it's kind of like the requirement. if the resolution is not that, mobile won't be able to load the video.

Emergency Notice
Hi all, Hiker informed me that the app Hotspot Shield is not safe, in that it has keyloggers lurking inside. I removed it from the list, since security is one major requirement for items on this list.

What About Microsoft ICE?
Pretty awesome program.
Also autoruns. -
autoruns is part of the sysinternals suite - and that is on the list I believe.
Microsoft ICE looks like a very interesting application to me - it may even be of use - thanks! -
I was listening to the This Week in Tech and I heard Dvorak say that he uses a bandwidth meter on his computer. Apparently, the internet providers are planning to place caps on usage in the US but as I live in Barbados, it will not affect me but I was curious about it.
So i searched and found ShaPLus Bandwidth Meter, it sits and counts the amount of bits you use and tell you how much you have used in the present session, today and for the month.

I don't know but I thought that it might come in handy. -

hey, how about deepburner free?
www.deepburner.com
been a user for years
see the difference between free and pro@ http://www.deepburner.com/?r=products&pr=deepburner&prr=provsfree
really lightweight program IMO
there's also another freeware program, deepripper (i know exact audio copy is better...but hey, just adding to the list) -
Thanks facadegeniality and Joyscant1980, I added both to the list yesterday.
-
Hmmm,... maybe it's good for monitoring how much bandwidth you've used so that you know whether or not you're approaching the per-month limitation on bandwidth imposed by your ISP?
Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
As Shyster says, it could be useful for people who have ISP's that now put a cap on bandwidth per month. Time Warner Cable actually did a "trial" run recently, but then got a huge backlash from it's subscribers for even thinking of it. They put that limiter "on hold" until the fall for now.
Meanwhile, Comcast has a 250GB/month cap now. So for me it'll be very useful. Especially when I need to keep my usage down a bit long enough for when the Windows 7 RC hits the masses in May. I don't think I've ever reached the cap, but I know that I'm a light downloader compared to the cap at about 30GB/month.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Thxs guys
also wondering if we have a Vote on the
Top 10 from the List we have -
Having something like that would be cool now that we have a multitude of options for each category. It would be cool to have several polls run through to determine the favorite apps and mark them in the list as 'popular'. I was also thinking of doing an 'editors choice' kind of thing for the list.
Details to follow soon on what I plan to do with this. -
I think a poll would be - whle potentially useful - impossible to realize.
Adding a poll means freezing the list - and a regular updated poll means that NBR users will have to regularly check the thread.
It also requires users to try out applications they potentially do not want just to vote on them...
Editor's pick - if not too much work would be a good idea. -
I just added BurnAware, which is a free disc burning software that does the usual stuff like all the other burning software titles do, with one exception: this one supports burning blu-ray discs.
Edit: I found it via www.neowin.net here. -
you should feel lucky i only get 17 gig on a rolling 30 days through wildblue. we can't get dsl or cable where i am yet!!!
-
Does anyone know if this will works with Vista? I have some larger files that would be much easier to send back-and-forth since I can't bring my external HDD to campus. I need a way to upload multiple files to share with my group and heard this would work. Can anyone vouch for it?
http://rapidshare.com/rapiduploader.html -
How big are the files? I recommend Dropbox, it's a Godsend for me.
-
It appears to support Vista, based on the screen shots on the left side of the page. My theory is that if it works in XP, it automatically works in Vista and Windows 7 (so long as it's not something related to hardware drivers).
Have you tried the Windows SkyDrive service? It allows uploading and sharing of files, and I've uploaded some big files a few days ago that worked pretty well. -
Hey Mc,
They're pretty large . . . upwards of 175 MB. I'll look into Dropbox.
Thanks, D. I'll look into the program you recommended. McGrady also recommended one that I'll look into as well. I thank you both. -
No prob, THAANSA3. I have to clarify though that the SkyDrive thing is a Microsoft web service thing. No software is required to be installed, which is a definite plus. It's not perfect, in that navigating through bucket loads of files is a bit of a hassle, but it's a decent option none-the-less.
