hi guys, anyone can rec me a freeware that can create and check checksums? im using vista 32 bit
edit: think i found one.
http://www.quicksfv.org/index.html -
Thanks for the add! It's good that XP and Vista are supported in it, and even works in the 64-bit editions too. I also like that it integrates with the Windows Explorer shell so I can right click on files I want to verify the checksums of.
I also found another one that doesn't require installation, but sadly doesn't integrate with the Windows shell:
http://www.download.com/MD5-Checker/3000-2092_4-10410639.html?cdlPid=10656030
They are both great tools however. Very handy if you are a power-downloader like me.

Im wondering if someone can post up a program that will allow me to view and interact with my desktop without having to minimize windows~ Something along the lines of how OSX can push all open windows to the side of the screen to reveal the desktop

Glad you like it! Welcome to NBR

Wow how is Songbird not on here. I just reinstalled today because they came out with a new version, the old used to EAT memory alive, the new one is improved. Still uses a lot vs WMP (it is based off Mozilla), but it has a lot of features and I am keeping it!
Here is whats new.
Even if you don't use it as a media player, the internet browser is okay
.
-
Good catch! I just assumed it was already here haha
-
Thanks! I can't believe I missed it also. I updated the list just now to include it.
-
Not sure if someone mentioned this but DVD Flick is a great open-source DVD authoring tool.
-
This is a utility that does what its name implies. It ID's your processor, and lists all of the capabilities that it has (Intel features). Figure it's handyy if you buy a used computer, to see exactly what's in there. Could also use it to ensure that your OEM gave you what you ordered.
Link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Intel_Processor_Identification_Utility_d4984.html
It's pretty small, like 1.3 MB, or something... -
Which one of those is good for monitoring ingame fps? Rivatuner is too much headache...

Added! Thanks! Only supported on Intel processors though... I just gave it a try on my AMD-based desktop and it complained saying the processor wasn't supported.
Thanks again Jayayess! Did you test this one out already? -
I checked the list, wasn't there, and so I added it just now. Thanks!

No, I don't need it. -
For converting just about anything Video or Audio to just about anything else, AVIDeMux http://www.videohelp.com/tools/AviDemux is hard to beat. For authoring DVDs from most any format FAVC http://www.videohelp.com/tools/FAVC is real good too, although a lot of users prefer version 1.06 to the current (1.07).

I have one to add, if possible!!! It's kind of cool!
Here is the site: www.roundpic.com
It's used for rounding *corners* on avatars and images!
Or, per the site:
I tried it, and it's just a neat, easy to use, little application!

Thanks! Added to the list.
Cool little web-app, Cin! -
Thanks, I had fun playing around with it!
And, from the looks of the site, the have a list of features they are currently working on ~ that they want to complete!!

You might want to also send people to "Giveaway of the Day" that offers licensed software for free. The only catch is you get no tech support and can only install it in the designated 24 hour period. Worth a look at least.

Here is some source to put on the original Post that will update automatically to let people know what is being offered each day.

Hi dbam,
I was thinking I would like to contribute to this Thread ... so need a clarification on this Statement ... when you say not "leaving" any files ... does that include the Program Folder ... for example "Nero" folder ... you know just the folder which is "Empty". Would that fail the test!?!?
Thanks,
G!
-
Thats a great idea actually. Thanks for the suggestion.
I hate it when an uninstaller leaves empty folders like that but it's just a minor inconvenience in me needing to manually remove it. So, it passes my test still.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 6, 2015 -
bin, I added your request to the list in finding an alternative hard-disk scanner/fixer application. Hopefully someone finds a tool for that soon.
-
Hi dbam,
I was just looking on the first page and I was wondering when the Tester says "Tested" can we add on What OS it was tested ... like XP or Vista 32-bit or Vista 64-bit ...
I was looking on AxCrypt and their webpage does not specifically say if their sw will work on Vista ... I know I have several application that although it does not say that will work on Vista ... they do!
Thanks,
G!

I use Vista Manager for that. That software is excellent to clean up and optimize everything. Try that.
-
Yes, you can specify what OS the app works on and I'll list that info. If an application just has [TESTED] only without indicating the operating system(s), then it means the app was tested on both XP and Vista. For the most part, an application designed for XP will still run fine on Vista but there are some rare exceptions.
-
Too bad it isn't free... http://www.yamicsoft.com/vistamanager/
Sadly, can't add it to the list. -
I suggest:
STDUViewer. Foxit Reader alternative. -
Thanks Karen, added to the list.

Hi dbam,
I installed Prevx CSI 3.0.1.17 to run an online scan ... suspecting possible Spyware on my laptop ... here is my 10 cents
- Installed it on Vista Home Prem., 64-Bit. Installs OK ... but Comodo pops out ton of Qs.
- CSI comes in both 32-Bit and 64-Bit flavors.
- The online scan was super fast ... and found nothing on my laptop.
- What bugged me about the program was ... after you have finished your scan and turn it off ... or idle ... the program WILL try to call back home ... several times right after the scan.
I wrote to Customer Service and they responded back and they claim they need to do that ... and that is their Model that they use!
So, I uninstalled it from my laptop ... I need something that does what I want and when I want without calling Home back every few minutes.
- The uninstall was an experience in itself also ... the CSI program tries to throw you off ... you have to just wait few seconds!
Thanks,
G!

Sorry I know there's a list of free video softwares here, but I want to know which one is the best (and easiest) for both resizing the video to 640 x 480 (VGA) or 640 x 352 (Wide HVGA) and encode it in mp4. Thanks.
I need to put some videos in my mobile.
Thanks to you too.
-
Well... one software that is good (but CPU intesive) is SUPER - the link is a bit difficult to find on their website and only works in IE (??)
-
Seriously. What is wrong with the creator of that website... It works in Firefox though.
Thanks. I'll try it now. -
It may have changed - but when I downloaded it it only worked in IE... its some php based link to ... not simple a href - anyway.
By the way: SUPER should run fine on the lappy in your sig
Got a newer similar model
and it is reasonably fast - encoding plus doing other stuff = no problem - but it does run under high/full CPU load.
-
It's unfortunate, but the output of the file from SUPER cannot be played in my mobile. All the videos return "Cannot load video data".
Any other software?
-
that is strange
sorry to hear that...
You have played around with the codec sections and file formats? -
Hi Karen,
For SUPER ... just pick the "Output" format ... don't touch the other stuff ... like Resolution and so forth ... you might be defeating your own purpose.
But ... could you tell me what is your Original Video Format ... a DVD, an AVI or what!?!?
G!

What's your mobile?

Great guide Bambam, I love how you've updated my old POS into something better than I could have made it. Just hope you're doing well with the negative comments you'll get from time to time too. If you ever need help or info then just spot me (thanks for giving me props when I don't deserve it man). If you can't reach me on NBR a lot of people know my IM handles, my address and my phone number.
-
I can varify that "Teamspeak" works fine.
-
Thanks Calvin! This would have been much more troublesome to get started without your original post.
-
Thanks Clutch! I updated the list to reflect this.

I have a suggestion for a great free calendar program. It's called Essential PIM ( http://www.essentialpim.com/?r=download) it comes in either a free version or a paid professional version. It's highly customizable and far less glitchy than Sunbird. Much much better than Windows Calendar as well. The professional version can syncronize with Google Calendar and others.
