Are softwares such as CCleaner and EasyCleaner
and the like actually useful....???
And are they harmful in anyway to the system.....???
-
yes. I use Ccleaner and registry mechanic regularly. They do free good amount of junk data as well as registry mess. have never heard of a problem with them. As of easy cleaner i donno. however most probably its harmless
-
I have never used EasyCleaner but I have been using CCleaner for some time now and I can say it is excellent and especially since its free. Firstly, it is very useful for making it very easy to clean you system from clutter that naturally builds. It is in no way harmful to the system however you may accidentally select an option that you do not want selected and might loose some configurations.
If you are aware of what your doing then I highly recommend it. I have been using it for a long time and I can pretty much say that defragging and Ccleaner is responsible for the system in my sig even running at all.
Here are some features:

Hope that helps -
I cover the use of CCleaner and EasyCleaner in my Tweaking Thread below.
I find that EasyCleaner is the most powerful 'free' program to clean unnecessary files and temporary files, much better than any other I have tried.
I don't use the 'Registry Cleaner' in Easy Cleaner as I run Vista Ultimate 64 Bit and it deleted a few needed registry entries when I first used it.
Hence, if anyone knows of a better free registry cleaner than CCleaner for Vista 64 Bit, please do tell!!!!
Heck, maybe I'll throw it in the Tweaking Guide, credit to you of course. -
When I first tried CCleaner in my old desktop, wow. The performance difference was HUGE. Of course, it's not applicable to my new laptop because I've been more careful with the things I install and I have barely uninstalled anything. Those uninstalls really leave messes in the registry..!
Anyway, they're useful to a certain degree. Cleans up your registry especially if your computer has uninstalled a bunch of programs over its lifetime. They can also clean up your temporary files for some extra disk space. -

The use of registry cleaners by those unencumbered by knowledge can precipitate serious problems.
However, the file system cleanup features of CCLeaner can be very useful without such concerns.
There is a post with my settings for CCleaner here and a post with my CCleaner registry cleaning settings here.
(I just updated the pictures in those posts today) -
Thus far, there have been no problems with CCleaner to report.

CCleaner's great, and I use it to delete all my history and temporary files. However when I'm using the registry cleaner, I'm more careful with what I delete. Sometimes messing with the registry can have harmful side effects.

I actually prefer RegSupreme for registry cleaning, still, I use both CCleaner and RegSupreme.

I just recently DLed Ccleaner for the first time and scanned my pc. MY desktop is a few years old and omg after using Ccleaner for registry and whatnot, I noticed a huge improvement in speed. Why didn't I find this sooner >:O
I have yet put it on my new laptop, because it's new and it shouldn't make a difference really right now. -

Been using CCleaner for some time. No problems here.

CCleaner is a must if you have an Eee PC (with XP). A few megabytes can really add up on this machine...
-
Well for the registry, it shouldn't be clearing much. Also, it's Vista. Ccleaner fully compatible with Vista? I don't want it to remove important things.
-

I never think twice before clicking, "Are you sure you want to delete the selected registry entries?" -
Yeah, I'm fine with that on XP, but Vista, I'm a little more hesitant. Lol.

I'm running CCleaner on Vista. All is OK here.
-
CCleaner works on vista, there's no ifs, ands, maybes, or buts. I don't find it fully effective though, so i use another free app which i find the best out of all that i have tested called Free Window Registry Repair.
UPDATE: People have been having problems with this software, i suggest you don't use it. -
I might try that. -

That's why it's in my best free software for windows list. It's one of the best.
UPDATE: No longer true. -
Calvin, I use RegSeeker; it works well. Are you familiar with this app? If so, would you mind giving a brief comparison between it and Free Window Registry Repair? Thanks.

Good god, I found 1433 errors in my registry with Free Windows Registry Repair.
I think I'm just going to go in and pick and choose. -

nice tip calvin... thanks

Anyway, Can you help me with my problem? here's my thread
I know your good at this... -

Looks like I will be using Windows registry repairs(saw the comparison in the Best free software thread)
Is it safe to delete all of this "2045 errors" on Full scan???? -
-
lolol 1750 errors. T_T
nice app.
i like how this thread was about ccleaner and now window registry repair. ;p
Also, do you recommend this over ccleaner? I only want one registry repair on my laptop. unless you recommend using both, ill stick with one, since their both vista compatible. -

I tried it, and other than a few things that needed fixing afterwards (e.g.: It removed the setting that made Firefox the default browser for one), it seems OK. Especially for free.
-
-
It doesn't and shouldn't change the setting of your default brower.
-
AKAJohnDoe Mime with Tourette's
Or, perhaps more correctly, it apparently deleted the registry key that defines the default browser.
I ran a full backup prior to running Free Window Registry Repair 1.2 and then ran Free Window Registry Repair 1.2 and then the default browser was not defined.
I can recreate this at will based on the full backup being restored and Free Window Registry Repair 1.2 being rerun.
And I have.
Still, not bad at all, especially for free. -
-
Always be sure to create registry backups before cleaning them. You can easily revert back the registry settings by doing so.
If you use windows live one care clean up scan it automatically creates a system restore point before the clean up process. -
Free Windows Registry has a built in backup, one of the things I like about it. You can restore whenever.
-
Cal,
I was wonder if you already try it out "Wise Registry Cleaner" at http://www.majorgeeks.com/Wise_Registry_Cleaner_d5437.html ?
i try out with Free Window Registry Repair 1.2 today and ran problem and pop-up errors screen (pix below) and scans long time and seems like forever loops ?

About your FWRR errors, i'm not sure what they are. I get them too, but only sometimes, other times it works fine. I think it's because it can't access a certain registry key because it's in use. If i have nothing running i don't get it, but when i have a few programs open it gives me that. If they're annoying you could use a different registry repair application. -

I seem to be having an issue with a couple of apps and that Free Registry Repair. I turned on my Eee PC and tried opening FireFox and all my settings were revereted (like on the default). Then I tried settiing them and it won't save. Then it started to crash... a lot. I even tried the lastest Beta 3 and the same thing happens.
IE is also acting up as well. I'm starting to have second thoughts regarding this app. -
