Ok, my comp booted itself while it was in the second part of installing sp1, now it went throught the first part AGAIN and then told me that the service pack was not installed and it's reverting the changes.
Hope it won't start installing them again when it boots.
Pisses me off..
Anyone had a problem alike?
EDIT: So it started the installation again. So now my comp is busted OS-wise. Thanks MS. -
-
Now it just skipped the first part and told me that the update was unsuccessful.
What gives? -
Patrick Y. Go Newbs! NBR Reviewer
hmm... it appears that you can easily uninstall SP1 RC1 and update to the RTM version according to Microsoft. True?
-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah. Your going to have to uninstall this when the official release comes out.
-
If anyone happens to know, when is the official release going to be?
Hope it works though >_> -
yep this thing screwed my system...
or more precisely, i think the interaction of VistaGlazz and the SP1 made the mess...i tried uninstall vistaglazz...but now vista dont stop complaining about not being able to access certain services and everything take forever...
so be careful.... -
Then don't make changes when you don't know what you're doing. Tweaks/registry hack etc. SP1 RC1 will install just fine if everything is in it's proper place
I'm sure it's not because of VistaGlazz!
So that "so be careful" is not appropriate
As I sad in an earlier post. RC1 is just ONE step before the final version, AND has passed a quality check at MS, before being released to the public -
Yes SP1 RC1 installed everything in it's proper place...
gave me back the original aero...
So i just wanted to install my old theme again, like a lot of people would probably do. So I decided to patch the system with VistaGlazz...i'm not saying it was the most clever thing to do, i just tried it...and from that moment everything falled apart...
So i just wanted to warn people that it MAY be a problem... I'll edit my post as my investigation about the problem goes forward.
You guys with the new SP1 working, do you have something different than the original aero?
EDIT:
I did a system restore...
reinstall the SP1...and didn't try to patch uxtheme this time...
working fine -
I'm just trying to decide whether or not SP1 is enough to warrant a switch back to vista.
-
any improvement in sleep/resume reliability?
-
Hmmm my RAM usage which is usually around 35% idle is now on 49%, but this looks similar to when i first installed 64bit vista. I will give it some time to see if there are any performance improvements.

Do note this is a pre-release hotfix and is not included with SP1 RC1 and wont install on a system upgraded to SP1 RC1. -
umm its not showing up for me in windows update. IS there any chance it could have automatically installed iself if I have automatic updates on?
Edit: nvm I just had to read my bad. -

Edit: This patch will probably make it into Vista SP1 but for now its for Vista RTM only. -

how come it's printed on the right bottom corner as "evaluation copy"?? i'm using a full version of original windows and just did a service pack installation
i never changed it to an evaluation copy?? damn MS just took out my original copy with this stupid SP1??
-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Its just the watermark for sp1. Its normal.
-
-
-
i don't remember seeing any of these watermarks when installing service packs on XP except if the windows is a REAL evaluation copy. stupid ms -
Maybe me usual idle time was 43% and now it is 43% after running it for an hour, its back to normal. CPU usage seems to stay in the 3% average range idle with my Core 2 Duo.

There are ways to remove it but you have to edit your registry which I don't recommend if your a beginner.
Believe it or not its there to help you. Its so that you are reminded to upgrade the full release when it comesout since you can effectively use the release candidate to june.
My wallpaper is white in the corner so its not noticeable. -
theres a watermark because its only a release candidate and not the official sp1
-
the only difference I can tell with sp1 is that waking my laptop from sleep is super fast!
-
-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Nope, not at all.
-
no not yet
-
-
Hopefully, the claims of increased battery life are true, my battery life has been disappointing to say the least.
-
There is a NOTICEABLE performance increase with service pack 1 for me. I'd say about 5 frames for most games, while everything is simply quicker booting up as well.
-
I did my 5th update check for the actual SP, after installing the prerequisites and it states that no new ones are available? I have been waiting 10 min between checks. Can I just type in the KB number and download it manually?
EDIT: Never Mind, just tried again and it popped up. -

I installed it and got 17 more gigs of harddrive space

Weird... I seem to get longer boot times and worse performance than before in general.

Try a defrag.

What KB number is SP1 RC1?
I have followed the above steps, but I don't have a watermark on my system.
When I upgraded using WU these were the updates it found and successfully installed:
KB938371
KB937287 -

Read the first page.

The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Its 936330.
It shoud say sp1 under system. What you installed are the prerequisites. Your doing it thorough windows update right? Now microsoft is saying it may take a few days for it to be recognized and allow you to download sp1. Best bet will be to reboot and try searching for updates.
"Installing the Sevice Pack
There are two ways to install the service pack, first, as a pop-up notification that the service pack is ready to be installed (this is the method in which most users will install the service pack) and using multiple manual installations from Windows Update. The first method is the simplest, but may take up to four days for the Windows Update Automatic Update feature to deliver each of the 3 prerequisites and the service pack. Windows Vista SP1 distributed through Windows Update will be applicable to Windows Vista machines that are running on any of the 36 languages supported by Windows Vista RTM." -
Read the first page, didn't see any KB numbers??? Any constructive help?
EDIT: Thanks Forerunner!!! Just did windows update and it recognized it. DLing right now and will report back when I have some time to play with it. REP++++ -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Sure no problem. I just noticed they changed the page to saying daays. You can just use the installer download, if it doesn't showup and you don't want to wait.

Thanks for the rep guys. -
I read that a user (somewhere in this thread) could no longer use a patched uxtheme after installing sp1, are there any other features/hacks that no longer work?
not that there are a lot of vista hacks out, but it seems mysterious to me that m$ wants to stop custom themes so desperately. -
I downloaded the file last nite through Int. download manager....the file is like 548 MB.......but whenever I try to run it nothing happens (double clcik on it nothing happens)............I hav done everything requied, prior to installation process(uninstal KB936330, :which I didnt had in my Update anyway)..........does any one know what the prb might be???
-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Well have you gotten all the other recent updates? Are you sure your windows is up to date otherwise because there are certain updates that are pre reqs. Also if you have done that, try rebooting and then try installing again.
P.S. I'm from Bangladesh too.
