So I recently just switched from Vista to Ubuntu Linux.
Loved the eye candy on Ubuntu. Gave me eyegasms everytime I turned my laptop on. One thing I liked from Ubuntu was the AWN dock.
But eventually I got tired of having to tweak my computer's OS and switched back to Windows Vista. I missed my dock terribly. Did a search and found Rocketdock. A neat free dock for Windows.
My question is are there any other docks for Windows(free or not) that are as good if not better than Rocketdock?
Im looking for something that looks good, is customizeable, and uses less than 11MB to run(which is the amount that rocketdock uses). 11MB for a dock seems like a hefty load to me. And vista already uses enough memory as it is.

My friend. I recommend you to object dock. Free, big name company made, shiny, and even though i've told it that it can use as much ram as possible, it only uses around 9k or 7k.
-
Does object dock allow you to change the skin?
Use PNG file icons.
And when you say 7-9K, does that involve decreasing the appearance settings. -
Yes, yes, no. In fact, i've set everything on the highest detail level.
-
Yup Object dock is the best.
Are you gonna use this as a task bar also? -
quicklaunch FTW!!!!!!
-
I recommend RocketDock, guess what it is FREE unlike Object Dock, works just as well.
-
^Homie. Objectdock IS free.

There is a plus version by the way.
-
-
I got the objectdock plus from a site without paying
Its pretty nice. But both object and rocket dock don't have something that AWN dock has.
The icon effect called Squishy. Where the icon jumps up and down and squishes when you highlight with a mouse. -
Im sorta in the same boat, just i use ubuntu like 90% of the time and vista when gaming, and I use rocket dock cause its simple and it worked in vista before objectdock did, so I kind of just stuck with it.
-
I use Objectdock, and I'm very pleased with it.

It is.

Nothing beats Y'z dock. It's been around ofr a while, apple sued and stopped distribution but the thing is so robust it will still allow new addons from other docks. Heaps of ports of object dock stuff for it too.
Lightest, most cutomisable, png for icons, it rocks! -
-
Good job promoting your pirate off of good companies like Stardock...
Anyway, I modified mine so it's all text nowSoo sexy.
-
You can also try RK Launcher. It supports most of effects and docklets that Object Dock does. You can also get the Genie effect thing for it too like on the mac. There is also a Stacks docklet you can get which will work for RocketDock, RK Launcher, and Object Dock (not sure about this one).
-
my vote goes for rocketdock

We don't discuss piracy in any way shape or form here. I suggest all of you edit, or delete your posts if they relate to piracy before you get infractions.

I just tried to warn anyone who was tempted to discuss the piracy any further. Now, no more talk of pirates. Back onto the topic of docks. how do you like object dock Wolf Mike?
-
I got a question for you guys.
Is there any way to set YZ Dock to reserve edge of screen just like in OD? -
I recommend Rocketdock... I found object dock and rklauncher were unstable (often durring gaming or heavy applications (even photoshop)) where rocketdock didnt even slow down... even when everything but mouse freezes rocketdock works
-
I use Objectdock and haven't had a problem with it. I recommend it.

Rocketdock here.
-
I use Objectdock. Here is my comparison of objectdock and rocketdock:
-
Rocketdock here, and It's the best. I used Y'z dock, but It wont work under Vista, so I switched to Rocket dock and I'm very impressed with the application. It only uses 6 Mb of ram on my HP. Very recommended.
-
I'll stick with objectdock, then.
-
-
is there a way to take rocket dock and make it ur toolbar...and u know delete the windows toolbar lol
-
The taskbar?
To hide the taskbar right click it & make sure ''lock the taskbar'' is unckecked then simply drag(by clicking the top) down.
Then go into your dock properties & you should see an option about minimizing windows to dock. -
hmm wont let me drag it down lol...i'm saying is there a way to use rocketdock as my sole taskbar...like have the windows button on there to access my all files too
-
I know what you want to do but it can only be done in objectdock so i can't help you unless you get it.
-
can it be done in the free version?
-
Yep. ninjaku text
-
so uh can u tell me how...
-
It'd be useless to you. You have rocket dock.
-
i deleted rocket dock andhave objctdck basic now...i'll rep u if u tell me how!!!
(bribe yay!!) -
Oh, you never told me you had switched, and i don't care about rep.
See, what you have to do is, to right-click on the dock and select dock settings.
Then you'll see an empty check box named "Hide the windows task bar".
Check it, and you no longer have to worry about the windows task bar.
And if you want it back all you have to do is un-check that option. -
Right click anywhere on the dock. Go to this dock. Then to properties. Go to dock lets. there should be a startmenu one. Add it. There you go!
Your set just clicking that docklet brings up the start menu.
I can't remember the setting but, look around for one. It should be labeled ''minimize to dock''.
Then do what Calvin just said. -
k ty and one more question...how do i get the windows button on the dock...u know to access my all programs and such?
-
You can also make a button on the dock to toggl hide/show task bar like Thomas suggested. Do you want to know how? It's a lot simpler than the process for rocketdock. You mean to get the windows start menu as a button without accessing the task bar? You can do that in objectdock. Right click and select add and when the menu pops up select "start menu launcher".
-
thx guys really appreciate it!!
rep all around!!
and calvin ya i'd love to know how lol -
It shows a preview on the right side of the dock of your programs whrn you select minimize to dock.
Use the startmenu docklet to be rid of any ties to the taskbar -
Alright. Right click, select add, then go to "start menu launcher" after it adds it, right click the icon and select "dock entry properties" and there will be a windows open with the properties. There is a place where is says "Command", select the "toggle hide/show task bar" option from the drop down list.
I'm also pretty sure that the minimize to dock setting is auto enabled in objectdock right? If not, want to know how? -
-
auto enabled but thx for all ur help!!
rly appreciate it!
my desktop finally looks good!
