I received a user report that a Windows 10 version 20H2 lost the only administrator account during the upgrade installation. I'll post the incident here on the blog to find out if there are other people affected. There were similar cases with older Windows 10 upgrades.

Yeah, New updates mens only injecting more bugs. Isn't it pretty bro @Mr. Fox :) Just lovely! It’s 2020, why am I not surprised?

Windows 10 20H2: Attention with update KB4592438, ChkDsk damages the file system

In Windows 10 20H2 there may be a massive problem with the disk check chkdsk when the update is installed KB4592438. When checked with error correction, this damages the Windows drive so that the machines can no longer boot after a restart. Here is some information about the problem and the affected Windows 10 build.

    @Papusan

Yesterday I was at a BMW Garage that I visit to repair/service my BMW and I was telling that owner that I am a tuner/tweaker bla bla bla. So he's like can you tune my computers? The first thing I checked was the Windows version and all the computers were running on Build 1709 so I check Windows update, it's disabled completely. I ask him why? He's like we disabled Windows update on all computers because once Windows updates it messes up our programs that we use. so this is what IT Administrators are doing now, to heck with Windows security patches, they just use an Antivirus and disable Windows updates on all machines.

Yes. He is correct. I stopped allowing Windows Updates before Windows 10 was released, and the updates were nowhere even remotely close to the level of buggy they are today. A system that works better and runs faster is far better than one that is more secure but not as fast or reliable. I only allow updates on my crash test dummy OS installations. They are disposable and unimportant to me. I expect them to get buggered up, and they do.

For me, 1709 was worst. Nearly bricked the SPI by setting read-only causing no BIOS settings to persist even with load optimized defaults on my sister's laptop. Fortunately, ubuntu shipped an update the re-enabled R/W access to SPI and was able to source another BIOS of same model to save the PC from being a paper-weight. Nearly lost sleep and tired since I had to go early to office the next day.

Well, you need to see my timeline or postings regarding 1511, 16707, 1703, 1803, 1809 and 1909 versions and you can see variance of experience I have had on mine and family member's PCs with dissimilar specs such as H/ULV Chips or even desktop versions.
Thanks for the compliment. I know I'm insane because it happened to me and others. You will understand it once you come across similar circumstance or situations wherein you'll feel the same emotions.

In the meantime, the simplest solution is to avoid unnecessary running the chkdsk command. In any case, you can always reboot the system to return to normal functioning if a Blue Screen is encountered.

I talk about bugs with the newest released versions. Who mentioned insider build? From one of the posted links...

A new critical flaw in Windows 10 version 2004 and version 20H2 is crashing some computers when users run chkdsk command. For that unaware, chkdsk, also known as Check Disk utility, allows you to scan through your entire hard drive to find and fix problems.

Windows 10’s latest update, which was supposed to fix some big issues, seems to be causing some serious problems. According to user reports, Chkdsk c: /f command is broken after the December 2020 update and it could crash your device with Blue Screen of Death error.

The spike in CPU usage has been reported by users after two updates were shipped this month – Windows 10 December update and Intel Driver & Software Assistant Tool update.

    @kojack why don't you take a break insulting @Papusan and @Mr. Fox.
Your insults are not justified. These 2 persons brings more to the community even if it seems to hurt your feelings.

Its just sad seeing some don't grasp it. Some even think they know better than Microsoft's own engineers. Isn't that amusing?

Microsoft confirms Windows 10 update bug causes boot issues windowslates.com - December 21, 2020

If your Windows 10 computer started rendering Blue Screen of Death when you run Check Disk command, don't worry - you'll be able to use your device properly again in the next 24 hours,..

For managed devices in enterprise environments, that have this update installed and are experiencing this issue, it can be fixed by installing and configuring a special Group Policy. For more information on the use of Group Policy, Microsoft refers to the Group Policy Overview.

Microsoft has acknowledged a new issue impacting Windows 10 customers that might cause booting to fail on devices where the chkdsk tool has been used to repair logical file system errors.

Windows 10’s new Corsair driver update is causing boot failures windowslates.com - December 22, 2020

A new driver update “CorsairVBusDriver” is currently rolling out to some users via Windows Update and it’s reportedly breaking down PCs. The latest driver is incompatible with the old CorsairVBusDriver (driver version is 2.x or older) and BSOD is triggered when the older driver is detected.

“This is caused by a very old CorsairVBusDriver (driver version is 2.x or older) installed with old CUE SW (CUE 2.x or older) conflicting with the new driver (driver version is 3.x) released with the recent Windows update,” wrote James, ICUE product manager at Corsair.

If you have a Corsair update pending in the Windows Update page, you need to uninstall the old Corsair’s CUE software and download the iCUE software, and then apply the Windows Updates.

This incident is another reminder for users to avoid the necessary driver updates offered via Windows Update.

Not so sure that your old aunt or uncle is able to understand all this mess. Windows as Services is a huge Joke. Of course it will screw up people systems. Doomed to happen as long they continue as this.

When I look in storage it says my temporary files are using 4.63GB but I can't find out what is using that space when I click on temporary files.

I have used disk Cleanup running as Admin and also just tried using the remove files option in storage and the size still stays the same.

Even using wise disk cleaner doesn't help.

How are you helping anyone by insulting people pointing out the issues in Windows 10? If you have disagreements with them you can do it in a mature way instead of insulting and dismissing any complaints about the OS. Also a lot of issues with the OS can be fixed if they allow users more control of their systems instead of restricting them especially with Windows Updates.

That's what's so comical about Kojak's posts. If he/she had a legit issue with Mr. Fox's / Papusan's posts, he/she'd just use the ignore feature, and not waste anyone's time. But instead he/she just continues to fill the thread with the same "garbage", offering no value to anyone.

I guess the moral of the story is "trolls will be trolls"

Nuff said on my part, lest this thread gets shut down

The best thing to do: report the troll post and let the moderator delete it and punish the person in silence. They will never know what hit them

Anyway back to the topic. Anyone know what police group changes are done to fix chkdsk bug on windows 10? I know there is a fix out from Microsoft but I just wanted to make sure it was applied successfully since there are no logs of the said patch anywhere

Hello, try to locate them, 1st places to look > Windows\Temp & Users\yourname\AppData\Local\Temp, see snip.

Set your choice of filemanager to show hidden + system files.

If those GB's are in there, delete everything (files in use \ needed wil not be deleteable).

In any case make a disk image backup before doing anything (f.ex. Macrium Reflect)

Would the ESD folder be included in temporary files as it is 4.6GB in size?

Using TreeSize shows the temp folder using only about 10mb.

Alright, 20H2 hit its last straw with me. It might interest some of you to know that I have ruled out undervolting as the cause of the crashes, so I dont know why it it doing what it is doing, but this is what happens each time it crashes, not even a bsod to say goodbye. upload_2020-12-24_18-11-3.png

Ok, which of these do I need to remove to go back to 2004? Or how do I do that again? Uninstalling the highlighted one did nothing for whatever reason.

Windows 10 major bug slipped into public builds, caused stability issues windowslatest - December 25, 2020

Over the last few weeks, users have reported that a new Windows 10 update bug appears to have broken Check Disk, one of the most useful command line-based tools that Microsoft ships with the OS.

For those unaware, Microsoft reduced the number of staff working in the Windows testing team in 2014 and started using virtual machines to test updates. In addition to its virtual machines, Microsoft also relies on Windows Insiders (a group of tech enthusiasts willing to test beta builds of Windows 10 and providing feedback on features as well as bugs)

This approach has resulted in an increased number of issues and bugs, and it is also ruining Microsoft’s reputation. There you have it :)

If space is the concern, take a look in win servicing LCU & Packages.
Can contain many 100.000's files (actually many, many more files that the w10 OS itself), and up to many GB's. Very safe (in my experience) to delete all files in there if no plans on resets, rollbacks etc.

As always, a (Reflect) backup (disk image) is the 1 st move, will always cure any potential consequences of late night overenthusiasm :O)

Microsoft is fixing a bug that deletes your passwords in Windows 10 windowslatest.com - December 29, 2020

In November, Microsoft acknowledged a bug that caused Windows 10 to fail to remember passwords in Chrome, Edge, OneDrive and other apps. The problem appears to happen randomly and to different applications, which makes bug tracking more difficult.

The reports of the problem first surfaced in April and it’s finally getting fixed in the next cumulative update, which is expected to arrive in February or March.

Yeah, and now we are only a day from Jan 2021. Only 9 months to fix it. But you won't get it before Feb/Apr. Heyyy, Good Job. Why not wait until April and celebrate 1 year jubilee for the fix :D

"Windows 10 bug corrupts your hard drive on seeing this file's icon"

    - An unpatched zero-day in Microsoft Windows 10 allows attackers to corrupt an NTFS-formatted hard drive with a one-line command.

    - In multiple tests by BleepingComputer, this one-liner can be delivered hidden inside a Windows shortcut file, a ZIP archive, batch files, or various other vectors to trigger hard drive errors that corrupt the filesystem index instantly.

    - After running the command in the Windows 10 command prompt and hitting Enter, the user will see an error message stating, "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."

Microsoft releases new Windows 10 Intel CPU microcode updates Jan 27, 2012
Microsoft has released a new set of Intel microcode updates for Windows 10 20H2, 2004, 1909, and older versions to fix bugs impacting multiple Intel CPU families.
You may remember the recent NTFS corruption bug in Windows that doesn't even require administrative privileges to be abused. There is a new bug in Windows 10. If you open a special path, the OS will crash and you will end up with the BSOD.

Looks like the 20H2 Cancer Edition crash test dummy OS has a mind of its own. The Digi-Nazis seem to have a back door. I kind of figured this was going to happen, I was just waiting to see how long until they were going to digitally rape my computer. When I turned it on this morning, Windows Updates were also installed. There was no opportunity to apply lubricant.

Macrium Reflect, my morning-after digital birth control, will clean up their filthy mess in just a few minutes. Contingency planning is a must.

Have you also disabled Update Orchestrator Service(UsoSVC) and put metered connection? What with WPD and O&O Shutup settings?

Btw. New cancer on its way.... Look at this mess... 3rd time has its sharm :D

Yes, all except the metered connection. You cannot even manually start Windows Update. It won't run and it won't access the internet for drivers if you attempt it. Even downloaded MSU files will also not run manually the way everything is disabled. But, somehow the Digi-Nazis managed to push updates to both Windows and Office against my will.

This happened to me once before. Maybe a year ago. I posted about it when it happened, but lost track of how long ago it was and don't remember.

the KB4598291 update has stopped those ESENT ID 642 errors from showing up in the Application Event log in the Event Viewer app (at least MS did something right with this new update) :)

that bug has been occurring since build 19041.1 and it took MS about a whole year to fix it

Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 LTSC and Windows 7 Ultimate in a multi-boot system.

If I understood how it happened, it probably never would have. There is apparently some kind of back door someplace, or maybe Windows 10 glitched and temporarily ignored my settings intended to block it. Fortunately, nothing got screwed up in the process.

Edit: I never get overly concerned. I keep Macrium Reflect images and if ever something doesn't go down my way, I veto Micro$lop and undo their messes with my Macrium sledge hammer in a matter of minutes.

Bro @Mr. Fox isn't it pretty?

    Windows 10 KB4598291 fixes another bug, but it’s also causing other issues windowslatest.com - February 8, 2021

Earlier this month, Windows 10 received a KB4598291 cumulative update which fixes a host of bugs, including some of the features broken by the October 2020 Update, such as the Alt-Tab apps switcher and Windows Credentials manager....

In addition to aforementioned bug fixes, this optional cumulative update also includes a fix for an issue which causes ESENT 642 errors. For those uninitiated, ESENT is a DLL in Windows and it is a data storage tech that powers different parts of the operating system.

User reports had suggested that mysterious error was causing performance and crashes for some installations of Windows 10. The problem was first reported when the May 2020 Update was launched, and Insiders had flagged it almost a year ago.

Windows 10 KB4598291 broke Discord screen share with audio windowsreport.com

Last week, Microsoft rolled out KB4598291, an optional cumulative system update that contained lots of fixes for browser-use and games.

However, it seems that while the update did correct frequent crashes, it also brought along other issues, which users have rapidly shared on dedicated forums.

Mine say 1809  And I will stay there :hi: A small typo from Deskmodder is a lot more appealing than what you get in that MS package

    Edit.
    The update increases the version number to Windows 10 21H1 19043.804, Windows 10 20H2 19042.804 and Windows 10 2004 19041.804.

As a note: If you are traveling with Windows 10 21H1, you will have to enter the * .mum files again via the command prompt so that the new version number is displayed. We have already updated the post .
