I think ltsc is the way to go really, you can get legit key for $18( https://www.provideocoalition.com/windows-10-ltsc-better-for-production-sanity-than-home-or-pro/). I've got it on my backup laptop and haven't had any problems but I don't use it a whole lot. Kind of easing my way in bc I'm a gamer and now that 7 is out EOL the biggest games are slowly phasing out support. When I was using it for heavy CAD it did seem to crash here and there more often than 7(rarely or never) but normal use no problems, stable. Sordum.org has some good freeware tweaks that simplify going through 100 menus to do certain things. Especially useful bc my current laptops are not worth upgrading or changing any critical hardware so it won't be an issue about the no new features etc When I upgrade all new hardware I'd still get it because for such a cheap price not a big deal when it's absolutely necessary to just reinstall the newest version. I have a feeling it really wouldn't ever come up though over the life of your average computer say 5 years cpu/gpu. I always try to use my equipment as long as possible and not needing highest graphics etc

High market share for the new and Deeply-flawed was is more important than wait with the release until they could do it right. But can't do that. Doesn't fit with their release schedule timeline.
A known bug that Windows 10 20H2 ignored
While most Windows updates cause high CPU usage, over the past months, incorrect CPU frequencies have been oftentimes reported and the much-awaited October 2020 update hasn’t brought a solution.
With this new build, Microsoft acknowledged that certain processors display the incorrect CPU frequency and that this release should fix them.
It’s unclear how widespread the issue is. And nevertheless, the fix is not yet available for the general public.
Unfortunately, there are no workarounds to this issue.

Yeah, 100%. LTSC is a superior product by every measurement. It will eventually fall prey to the Redmond Mafia's digital genocide practice, but until it no longer works I would keep using it
And, yes... Sordum has some insanely good utilities that go a long way as far as tweaking Windows is concerned. ESO is indispensable for killing all of the life-draining payload of bloat that Windows 10 is notorious for. They have a few utilities that are so good that I refuse to run Windows 10 without them.Last edited: Oct 27, 2020Normimb, jclausius, cfe and 1 other person like this. -
You think they would force updates for it or get rid of it? Idk the normal user is a business paying M$ good money to not have constant updates, seems like it would wreak havoc on medical and other systems that M$ wouldn't want the bad publicity for. I guess I could see some force check to make sure it's not being used by an individual outside of companies but that seems like it would be a whole new amount of work for them they wouldn't want to do. I think the schedule is next year for the new release of ltsc.
Yeah so far I've only encountered a couple of games I'm interested in that just won't work on win7, death stranding, wrc9 and hzd, everything else I've got works fine, even if not listed in the minspecs. But as the new consoles come out I think dx11 support will be even less for big games, smaller games like wrc9 are crazy to cut off those customers with win7. Wish they'd just use vulkan as an option in all games problem solved. That's really the only reason to switch my main laptop otherwise. But the thought of all the tweaks, software etc I'd lose isn't enough atm.jclausius likes this. -
Again, there are choices. If you don't like Windows don't effing use it. It's very simple. And I agree you can't fix......

Windows 10 20H2 Inplace Upgrade Fix [Download] as long as an Inplace does not work deskmodder.de | today
Microsoft released the Windows 10 20H2 to everyone a few days ago. This version still has one "flaw". Because an in- place upgrade repair of the Windows 10 20H2 is currently not possible.
Without a change, no data and programs can be transferred during the in-place upgrade. A workaround helps to uninstall the KB4562830 (Enablement Package) and then carry out the in-place repair. But unfortunately there are some who can no longer uninstall this update

About that Flash-zapping patch, KB 4577586? One leeetle problem. It doesn’t remove Flash askwoody.com
Earlier today Microsoft released KB 4577586, the “Update for the removal of Adobe Flash Player: October 27, 2020.” As Susan notes in the entry below, it’s only available if you manually download and install it from the Microsoft Catalog.
Now comes word from Lawrence Abrams at BleepingComputer that the patch doesn’t do anything of the sort:
Let’s hear it for Microsoft’s testers – the unpaid ones, at least.
As a side notice...
If you apply KB4577586 and you’d like to use Flash Player again, there’s a catch – you would need to reinstall or reset Windows 10. Or you may need to restore the device to an earlier restore point.
You cannot uninstall Adobe Flash Player removal update using Settings, Command Prompt, and PowerShell.

Windows 10 20H2-Upgrade: Microsoft Edge Downgrade as Pitfall
Posted on 2020-10-29 by guenni
When upgrading a system to Windows 10 20H2 via WSUS there is a nasty trap that a blog reader pointed out to me. When upgrading, an existing Chromium Edge browser of the old system is forced to upgrade to an older Edge version. And Edge is not automatically updated afterwards.

- We fixed an issue that may prevent the Smart Cards for Windows service from starting.
- We have added a new Microsoft Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) provider called Microsoft Antimalware UacScan. This ETW provider reports the details of the context for each User Account Control (UAC) request in the ETW provider's manifest.
- We have fixed a problem with VPN connections (Virtual Private Network) that use a secure password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) for authentication and have the "Automatically use my Windows logon user name and password" property activated. When you connect to this type of VPN, an authentication dialog box incorrectly prompts you for your login information.
- We are now showing recovery partitions in Diskpart utility.
- We fixed an issue causing stop error 0xd1 in sys. This problem occurs when certain arrays are moved from one cluster node to another.
- We fixed an issue resulting in the IAutomaticUpdatesResults :: get_LastInstallationSuccessDate method returning 1601/01/01 when there are no active updates.
- We added support for Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.1 and 1.2 protocols when connecting to SQL Server through the data providers in Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC).
- We fixed an issue with SQL Server that could cause performance issues if you configure a linked server provider to load out of process.
- We fixed an issue that could affect Windows performance and prevent the LanmanServer service from starting when third-party software is using custom file system controls (FSCTL) from LanmanServer.
- We fixed an issue with deduplication causing long waits on Resilient File System (ReFS) Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV).
- We fixed an issue that could prevent some applications from behaving correctly. This occurs when you publish them as Remote Application Integrated Locally (RAIL) applications using Remote Desktop Services (RDS) and change the docking for an AppBar.
- We fixed an issue with a deadlock in the Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCPIP) driver causing the operating system to stop working or stop responding.
- We fixed an issue that caused the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) to stop responding to new connections. However, RRAS continues to work for existing connections.
- Fixed an issue that caused the RRAS Administrator Microsoft Management Console (MMC) to stop responding randomly when performing administrative tasks or at startup.
- We fixed a problem starting Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL2) on ARM64 devices that occurs after installing KB4579311.
- In addition to the resolved problems that were already corrected in the * .608, the following was added:
- We fixed an issue causing the Docker pull operation to fail. This problem occurs because of a Code Integrity (CI) policy that is blocking the import of a Windows container image.

Well my sojourn to win10 is now a daily affair, yesterday I was playing doom eternal and my m6700 just cut out, 980m card was burned out, on top of that a while later after a couple of disassembly and reassembly's I turned it on and there was a stray screw in the case, burning smell. Now nothing but the caps lock light on.
Sorry to break protocol and know this is the wrong thread but the m6700 thread, where I posted more details, is almost dead. Does anyone have one of those and can give any advice? I don't see any obvious burn marks and I've tried no battery just adapter, no gpu(since I don't have another mxm that size) or gpu heatsink, take out the memories, take out the msata main os drive, I'm pulling my teeth out. Disassembly is such a long process to do multiple times.
Next try to clean the board with alcohol and different configs, like an old 1000m I have laying around, etc and look for a barebones one on eb, I've got everything else and it was fine for me. Sorry this is just a terrible thing for me right now, traveling so limited resources/options etc and I loved my m6700 put so much effort into it and now it's gone, especially with quarantine it sucks. I'm stuck with my backup m4600 dual core w an m4000, sucks for gaming and win10 seems so clunky on it frankly.
Again sorry for the wrong forum but I'm desperate here, thanks. -
I am terribly sorry to hear about this tragic incident. I do not have any parts that would be useful in repairing it, but you have my prayers and condolences. That really sucks. I have had similar experiences before with a computer that I love unexpectedly dying and it's a terrible feeling.jclausius, Papusan, Normimb and 1 other person like this.

Thanks Mr Fox. It sucks to lose not just a 980m but also the use of the whole computer now. I've never had this happen before and I loved my m6700, especially now with so much extra time and games to play it sucks. I've torn it apart several times, tried different things, nothing. On a positive note I'm going to get a barebones one from eb when it comes up bc I literally have everything needed other than what failed, be it cpu or mobo. Then look for another 980m or 970m, all in time though. Getting a new gaming level laptop like a 1070/2060 would cost twice as much. My 2020 has been unusual like the year as a whole for everyone, I'm a gypsy right now so it meant even more than normal.
-
So sorry to hear about this disaster. Until I built my desktop, this configuration (6700HQ/980m) was my main computer. I still use it a lot, though gaming has shifted to the desktop machine. A very stable and balanced configuration - and it continues to be a mainstay for picture and video editing when traveling. Good luck with your reconstruction.Normimb, Papusan, hertzian56 and 1 other person like this.

I just saw this post over in the TS thread. I can understand W!0 forcing microcode updates down our yaks. Since when does W10 now force BIOS updates? My understanding is that the BIOS on a PC is not the same as the firmware on a phone. I tried to download a new Google Reader app on my iPhone 11 and saw that I couldn't because I hadn't installed the latest and greatest iOS. But bricking my fruit phone is much more palatable than bricking my PC with a firmware update gone wrong. Or worse yet, having W10 tell me I need to update my BIOS for no better reason than Microsoft thinking it best for me. BIOS scare tactics - get lost; I'm not buying. -
-
Well getting back to the thread topic, with a heavy heart though lol, now that I'm using my backup laptop with win10 ltsc on it and the various fixes such as turning off defender, updates and getting all the classic windows accessories back like calculator, paint, windows picture viewer, notepad etc it's not too bad. Of course having to do all that should not be necessary. I turned off defender because the win10 version seems way too aggressive, I use trainers in games, I only play SP. I'd have to whitelist way too much. The win7 version never gave me any problems, maybe it just sucked idk, never had any viruses of note though. Full screen optimization sure seems to mess up a lot of games, they don't play full screen when changing resolutions. This is the current ltsc version 1809. This is an old laptop though with only 8gb ram, dual core i7 cpu, firepro m4000. Plays light games and well optimized newer ones like theHunter COW, plays MGSV, RE2. But Ghostrunner and RDR2 are out for sure.
On a side note I got a used HP Omen 17.3", 7700hq, gtx 1070, 32 gb, 120hz 72% ntsc laptop as a replacement for my beloved m6700. $678 shipped. This time I'm damn well going to watch temps with msiab and make sure the vents are clean, repaste, lift the back of the laptop up when heavy gaming, in short be paranoid so this doesn't happen again. -

Microsoft warns Windows 10 bug behind black screen, browser data loss windowslates.com - November 6, 2020

Browser data loss bug
Windows 10 version 2004 and newer are also plagued with notable issues for Chromium browser and Microsoft’s own apps. Following the May 2020 Update, users have been reporting that Chrome and Edge browsers have stopped sycning their data, and their browsing data is reset automatically upon a reboot.
Microsoft and Google both are aware of the problem, and the fix is expected to arrive later this year.
“We (Microsoft) are working on a fix for this issue, but due to the nature of WindowsUpdates, it will, unfortunately, be a while longer until we can release it via a monthly servicing update,” Microsoft said.
For now, there’s no proper fix, but you can try to mitigate the problem by deleting tasks from Windows 10’s Task Scheduler.

Windows 10 bug is negatively impacting performance with system freezes windowslatest.com | Today
Windows 10 is encountering some serious problems thanks to a recent cumulative or feature update, with users reporting worrying system ‘freezes’. Fortunately, Microsoft is aware of the reports, and they’ve already fixed the performance issues in a preview update.
One of the most widely documented problems is system freezes or slow down. As users have noted in a forum thread, which is still active, Windows 10 version 2004 or newer will freeze games or apps, and “nothing can be done” as only “hard reset can get it working again”.

Windows 10 2004 / 20H2 and the broken 'Credentials Manager': cause and workaround - part 1
Posted on November 9, 2020 by Günter Born
I'll get again a high unleidiges topic. The credentials manager is unusable with the Windows 10 May 2020 update (version 2004) and with Windows 10 20H2. Because the login information management forgets the access data, which affects all applications that use this function.
Problem: Broken credential management
Credentials Manager enables Windows to store credentials in a secure safe. Actually a cool thing, the saved credentials can be used to log into websites, connected applications, and networks. This is used by Outlook via OneDrive to browsers and other software for logging into accounts. In addition, the login information management allows these login information to be displayed and deleted. Microsoft has published this post which shows the scope with the function.
The problem, however, is that Windows developers have a fatal tendency to break the functions of the operating system with (feature) updates. Since Windows 10 version 2004, the credential management is simply broken and no longer works. Isn't this correct bro @Mr. Fox ? -
I haven't noticed. It does not seem that I have been affected. I am using a local account and I do not use garbage like OneDrive. It is possible that my use scenario is not reliant on this functionality. Outlook seems to be functioning normally for me. I have one of each cancer version on multi-boot systems and the main issue with 2004 and 20H2 is further performance degradation. Each generation of Windows 10 takes a hit on performance more than the one before.Last edited: Nov 9, 2020

This commenter nailed it:
"Call me paranoid, but many of the users I support are not part of any domain and log into their Win10 computer with a local account. Is this an attempt by Microsoft to “force” users to login with a known Microsoft account — for easier tracking ;D" -
I use a Microsoft Account and have the same on 5 computers. none of them show a problem with the 20H2 update. Of course, Microsoft did change some telemetry settings.

MS is just a business operating in a capitalist environment. The true source of our grief are the people who continue to enable MS in the first place. If somebody really cared or had the cajones to make necessary changes, we wouldn't be seeing this level of service provided by MS. In reality, consumers are either too lazy or too stupid to recognize what is going on.
@kojack is dead-on about choice. The problem that viable alternatives to MS really do not exist. At least without having to make drastic choices at the end-user level - e.g., stop using PCs altogether.Mr. Fox likes this. -

Windows 10 2004 / 20H2 and the broken 'Credentials Manager': cause and workaround - part 2 borncity.com - November 10, 2020 by Günter Born
The credentials manager is unusable for Windows 10 May 2020 Update (Version 2004) and Windows 10 20H2 because it forgets access data for applications that use this function. In Part 1 I already addressed the topic. In Part 2, I will add some additional information about a possible cause.

There is merit with what you are saying. I too personally have never had a problem with Windows (maybe back in Windows 3.1 days...). Still. I believe we have been lucky. The way codes are written is such that our typical use doesn't unearth latent code defects. Those defects are there. And potentially very costly if not dangerous. I work in a world where software is relied upon for safety. Such software has to go through rigorous quality assurance testing before it can be released for use. A recent example is where a laboratory experimenter accessed options in a program resulted in the loss of not only his experiment but the experimental platform itself (an operating research reactor). I have used and currently oversee codes which determine the safety of operations. A recently identified flaw permitted unsafe code responses to be accepted.
You can keep patching mutated globs of code, temporarily bandaiding one problem, but leaving open a vulnerability for others. Here's an interesting article for MS's need for software QA:
https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/need-software-qa-role-microsoft-dennis-dietrichkojack likes this. -
that would be the softwares creator’s issue, not ms. I had issues with software from time to time. But it was always 3rd party software. It’s not windows it’s the person who coded the software to work on windows. Totally irrelevant to wether windows is stable or not. I had massive issues with windows me and then vista for a short period when it was released first. But once sp2 was available for vista I had no issues with windows other than trying crap the people here are talking about. Once they learn to leave it alone and just use it, it will be very very reliable. Start screwing with it then it becomes unstable, not a fault of windows.
-
All I can tell you is with each "feature update" my benchmark scores keep going down, down, down and the bloat of Windows 10 trash services that waste CPU clock cycles and other system resources keeps going up, up, up. That's not how I define awesome.
If it were the exact opposite, my opinion would be the exact opposite. The bloat doesn't offer any value, so I don't understand why they are wasting calories producing rubbish. -
Look on this beauty. Only Win 10 1903/09 is worse than the latest and greatest from Redmond. Numbers never lie
More bloat. More security problems. Just look on Dell's problem child. Their software really sucks.

Hints About a Future, But No Use in the Present
As of Windows 10’s October 2020 Update at the end of 2020, you should ignore the “Experience” line in the Settings screen and forget about the “Windows Feature Experience” for now. It doesn’t really mean anything.
Its presence is an artifact of Microsoft’s development process: The company is always experimenting internally, and signs of that experimentation are appearing in the released versions of Windows 10.
Now wouldn’t it be nice if Microsoft just came out and said that publicly?
What Is the “Windows Feature Experience Pack” on Windows 10? howtogeek.com | Today

A Single OS For All Microsoft’s Devices?
Microsoft is working hard on Windows 10X, which was going to be designed for dual-screen devices, but now looks like it will initially just be a more “modern” version of Windows that confines traditional desktop applications to containers.
These different versions of Windows could have the same underlying operating system and differ only in their “Feature Experience Experiment Pack.”
