Windows 10 2004 now blocked on devices with LTE cellular modems bleepingcomputers.com | Today
Microsoft has acknowledged another known issue affecting Windows 10 devices with WWAN LTE cellular modems and is now blocking Windows 10, version 2004 from being installed on them until a solution will be available.
Some devices with WWAN LTE modems might be unable to connect to the internet and may show no internet connection in the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) within Windows 10's notification area according to Microsoft.
Microsoft says that this issue only affects Windows 10, version 2004 desktop platforms, with Windows Server, version 2004 devices not being impacted.

Once again try to trick people into upgrade the OS as they tried for the May upgrade?
And the spring 2004 upgrade is still flooded with bugs.
With Windows 10 2004 gradually creeping (I use the term intentionally) onto more machines, faults and foibles are coming out of the woodwork. It looks like a fix for the long-lamented version 2004 defrag bugs is on the way, but we aren’t there yet. Lenovo isn’t too happy with the August version 2004 cumulative update. It’s still too early to move to 2004, in my opinion — and those problems ensure I’ll keep 2004 off my machines for a while... Woody is a smart man.

Many of the updates and patches Microsoft releases for Windows 10 prove to be unpopular, usually because of the new problems they can introduce. But with the KB4023057 update, people have another reason to consider avoiding installing it.
KB4023057 has been pushed out by Microsoft several times before, and the company has just started to push it again. The aim of the patch is to address issues that have been preventing some people from upgrading to newer versions of Windows 10, and also override any blocks that users have put in place to stop feature updates from being installed. The problem is that there are many people with good reason to stick with an older build of Windows 10, but KB4023057 is ready to ride roughshod over such plans.
This means that Microsoft is actively ignoring clear decisions taken by users, so if you do not want to be forcibly upgraded to a newer build of Windows 10, the advice is simple: avoid KB4023057.

I am against telemetry but that OS he should is crippled and straight out not functional I would never even come near it. I'd rather disable things myself whilst keeping everything working. Microsoft is investigating Windows 10 bug that messes login credentials windowslatest.com - September 5, 2020
Last month, we reported about one new issue in Windows 10 that could disrupt the Credentials Manager, making it difficult for consumers and even business customers to log in to certain apps, such as Google Chrome. In addition, this nasty bug could also log you out of your websites randomly if you save your credentials on Windows 10...
According to reports that we’ve seen, the bug affects a number of apps, including Edge, Chrome, Acrobat, Outlook, OneDrive, and even VPN services. Microsoft has launched a separate investigation into a problem with authenticating a VPN through Windows Security feature.
Interestingly, Chromium engineers also launched their own investigation into the issue, but their initial findings suggest that the problem is with Windows 10 and it affects other apps on the system that are using DPAPI (Data Protection API).jclausius, Vasudev, Fire Tiger and 2 others like this. -

Windows 10 now flags telemetry blocking as a severe security risk windowslatest.com - September 7, 2020
Telemetry is defined as system data that is uploaded by the Connected User Experience and Telemetry component on Windows 10. The telemetry data includes information about the device, including the hardware CPU, installed memory, storage, and how it’s configured.
Telemetry is necessary for Windows 10’s development and other companies also rely on telemetry to improve their software. However, some Windows 10 critics see it as a form of “spying” on the part of Microsoft. Just got'a love this wrong statement "Telemetry is necessary for Windows 10’s development". @Mr. Fox

Microsoft patches the SSD defragger bug in September 2020 update
With Windows 10 KB4571756 (Build 19041.508), Microsoft has finally resolved the issues with Drive Optimize tool and Windows will stop defragging your SSDs automatically on every reboot.
Here’s a timeline of how the bug was discovered and acknowledged:
- Windows Insiders flagged the issue in January 2020.
- January’s preview Build 19551 resolved the issue.
- The bug somehow slipped into the final release of May 2020 Update.
- On August 14, Microsoft told us they’re aware of the reports.
- Build 19041.488 August optional update fixed the bug in May 2020 Update.
- Build 19041.508 patches the problem for everyone running May 2020 Update.
But.... It doesn’t fix the TRIM command running on hard drives. BleepingComputer has details. Hey, it only took Microsoft eight months to fix the defrag bug
Unfortunately, Microsoft has not fixed the bug that causes the Optimize Drives feature to perform the TRIM command on non-SSD drives, as shown below.
Performing TRIM on a non-SSD drive
There is still no official word from Microsoft regarding the TRIM bug, so we will have to wait on future updates for a resolution.

Windows 10 20H2 set to launch soon: All you need to know windowslatest.comSpartan@HIDevolution, cfe and jclausius like this. -
Ahead of the rollout of Windows 10 version 20H2 update, Microsoft has re-released KB4023057 to some devices in the production channel.
KB4023057 is a reliability update that is re-issued regularly by Microsoft before the launch of a feature or major cumulative update.
The update is offered to users via Windows Update but not through WSUS or business channels.
After the patch is applied to your device, it may attempt to reset network settings, clean up Registry settings that may unintentionally prevent updates, repair or disable corrupted components, compress files in the user profile directory, and reset the Windows Update database to repair problems
As you can see, this patch attempts to undo changes (including Registry hacks) that prevent Windows Update from working. The goal of KB4023057 is to fix the problems that may unintentionally affect the update processes in Windows 10 and prevent important updates from being installed.
It’s also worth noting that you may want to avoid KB4023057 if you don’t want Microsoft to enforce feature upgrades on your device.

Optional driver updates under Windows 10 are only there for problem cases deskmodder.de September 25, 2020
In August, Microsoft confirmed the optional driver updates for Windows 10 Update. We reported on it in detail at the time . Lately, however, there have been increasing reports in the forums about what these drivers are for.
Or why they are dated 40, 50 years ago. There were a few who simply installed these drivers. Because you normally install incoming updates that are listed under Windows Update. Therefore, here is an exact explanation again.
Optional driver updates under Windows Updates:
- Microsoft provides these drivers in case there are problems with the current drivers under Windows 10.
- An online search for drivers via the device manager no longer exists. Hence the offer for the optional driver updates.
- Since standard drivers or older drivers are often offered here, the date of the driver is sometimes "historical". The standard drivers have an old date so that newer drivers can also be installed.
- So if you have no problem with your device and the drivers, you don't need to install these optional drivers .
- Updated drivers via Windows Update are offered as normal and are also installed automatically.
Back to business...

Strange thing that came to my attention on Twitter. Windows Update offers people optional drivers, but they don’t really fit for the machines in question. Microsoft rolls out apparently optional INTEL driver updates of the type INTEL – System – <Date> <Version>.
Addendum: There is also a Microsoft Answers forum post, where a user claims the following:
Why is Windows 10 Update trying to install Surface System 1.0.104.0 and Surface Keyboard 1.0.104.0 on my Dell laptop (Dell Latitude E6420)? It’s showing that the update status is pending install. My OS is Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. Updates were last checked (automatically) today at 12:18 PM CT.

Well, I just read this article about M$ potentially (probably) optimizing for a future profit model that is focused on integrating Linux as the central hub and abandoning Win10 "OS" as we currently know it.
Sounds crazy until you do the math. Article cites OP blogpost by Eric S Raymond who paints a convincing picture, and as we already can see from connecting the dots, M$ has been long and steadily preparing:
"Looked at from the point of view of cold-blooded profit maximization, this means continuing Windows development is a thing Microsoft would prefer not to be doing," he wrote. "Instead, they'd do better putting more capital investment into Azure – which is widely rumored to be running more Linux instances than Windows these days."
