Ongoing list of problems with the February 2020 Patch Tuesday patches
Posted on February 12th, 2020 at 10:47 woody Comment on the AskWoody Lounge
It’s a bumper crop — not only 99 separately identified security holes getting plugged, but a whole lot of unexpected fixes.
- Win7 free patches (including, unexpectedly, a new Malicious Software Removal Tool)
- Win7 paid patches (Microsoft tossed in a ringer to clog up the works)
- A Win10 UEFI patch directed at a specific manufacturer – but which one?
- A horrible, Chicken Little “exploited” IE JScript security hole
Still much, much too early to see if there any big bugs.

FAQ: Microsoft, Kaspersky and KB4524244 security update issues
Kaspersky has put the blame squarely on Microsoft after a recent Windows 10 update (KB4524244) Kaspersky.com | Today
What happened?
Microsoft released security update KB4524244 as a part of its February 2020 Patch Tuesday. This update caused problems with some devices and Microsoft revoked it.
Why Kaspersky is involved in the story?
The update addresses a security vulnerability that was found in Kaspersky Rescue Disk, and then publicly disclosed in April 2019. This was later fixed in August 2019.
Kaspersky has put the blame squarely on Microsoft after a recent Windows 10 update (KB4524244 ) meant to further protect against an attack that exploited a vulnerable version of the Kaspersky Rescue Disk software has caused more system crashes. The security company claimed that it had already patched the vulnerability in August 2019.
According to Kaskpersky, Microsoft updated its UEFI signatures list to revoke certain UEFI signatures that were being used with older and maliciously modified versions of the Kaspersky Rescue Disk.Robbo99999, jc_denton and hmscott like this. -

Installing Windows 10 without a Microsoft account becomes more difficult
good Morning February 20, 2020
It's actually a shame that Microsoft is putting more and more hurdles on users and thus preventing them from deciding what to do. But it keeps going towards Windows 10 X. No access to system files, registry etc. pp. Sooner or later, home users will have to get used to this. Microsoft cannot install these hurdles in the higher versions Pro and Enterprise, because otherwise one would get in trouble with the administrators of the companies.

Windows 10 Will Ditch Live Tiles (Report) tomshardware.com | Feb 25, 2020
Windows 10 going for something more traditional.
Live Tiles were developed to offer more at-a-glance information than the icon grids found on iOS and Android smartphones. That way people could view important details, like the weather forecast or a meeting time, right from the Start screen.
Live Tiles were a core part of the Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8 user interfaces. Even though Microsoft switched to a more traditional UI for Windows 10, the tiles remained in the Start menu, and they've stayed pretty consistent ever since. Yeah, Windows OS was transformed into a phone OS

Microsoft Wants to do Away with Windows 10 Local Accounts bleepingcomputer.com | Today
As time goes on, it is becoming increasingly clear that Microsoft is trying to make local accounts a thing of the past and push all new Windows 10 users to a Microsoft account...
Microsoft wants you in the cloud
As Windows 10 evolves, much of its functionality and features are tied to the cloud and your Microsoft Account.
Whether it be Your Phone, OneDrive, Office integration, Xbox, and the Microsoft Store, without a Microsoft Account Windows 10 is not as feature-rich.
Due to this, it makes sense for Microsoft to push users towards a Microsoft account rather than a local one to take advantage of all these integrated services.
Even more important, though, is all the juicy data that Microsoft can collect from a user utilizing all of their cloud-based services.
By utilizing a Microsoft account, Microsoft has greater visibility into what you are doing, searching for, and using to improve their software and promote new offerings.
While much of this data collection can be slimmed down, with our data being treated as currency, the more they can get the better. -
"Windows 10 could get a new Start menu as Microsoft kills off one of its most useless features"
- ...set to get a redesigned Start menu in a future update, with Microsoft finally killing off Live Tiles for good.
- ...made their way to Microsoft’s desktop operating systems starting with Windows 8, back when the company wanted to make Windows an OS that was suited to both traditional PCs and touch-screen devices (and ended up failing at both).
Yep @Papusan. I think we mostly can agree we get a happy feeling when reading this news.

Windows 8.1/10: What’s the status of the user profile bug?

Some February 11, 2020 update kills the user profile during installation. Where do we stand regarding the bug at the end of February 2020 after the C and D Week updates are out?
Windows 10: Update KB4532693 kills the user profile
The cumulative update KB4532693, released of February 11, 2020 for Windows 10 versions 1903 and 1909 shows the same behavior. For some users, the desktop was gone or the files and icons disappeared after installation. For most users, Windows 10 used a temporary user profile after the update was installed the next time they logged on. I had reported about this in the blog post Windows 10: Update KB4532693 kills user data/profile...
In the above tweet, Bleeping Computer points out that for some users, the user profile files were completely deleted during the update installation. Then these files could only be restored from backups. And this comment says the same.
In the meantime, Microsoft has released Update KB4535996 for Windows 10 Version 190x (see Windows 10 Version 190x: Update KB4535996 (Feb. 27, 2020)). The update unfortunately does not fix the bug with the broken/deleted user profile – but at least includes a correction for the bug with the display of the Windows search box

Microsoft changes its Cortana strategy, drops features

Microsoft announced plans yesterday to change the digital assistant Cortana into a tool that is focused on "productivity" and more closely aligned with the company's vision for Microsoft 365.
Closing Words
Is the change a last attempt at establishing Cortana as a new service? It seems clear that Cortana did not meet Microsoft's expectations; this left Microsoft with options to drop Cortana entirely or try to reinvent it to give it another chance of success.

Windows 10 Y3K Bug: Won't Install After January 18, 3001 bleepingcomputer.com
A bizarre bug could affect some Windows 10 users that try to install the latest (latest and greatest) Windows release on computers where the BIOS date is set to January 19, 3001, or later on AMD or Intel motherboards.
"I think Gigabyte needs to fix the BIOS on every current motherboard they sell and Microsoft needs to add a reasonable date check during the initial install process," Holzman told BleepingComputer.
When BleepingComputer contacted Microsoft about this bug, we were told that they had nothing to share. -
That's pretty silly to try, given it involves a lot of in between software that can go wrong for any number of reasons.

FYI - I converted 10k's of servers to comply with Y2K across a bunch of OS's and vintages of hardware. There was a lot of work involved - it took months to prepare for the switchover, and it all worked fine.

Surprise, Surprise: Windows 10 KB4535996 Update Is Causing Serious Issues For Users hothardware.com | Tue, Mar 03, 2020
For many Windows 10 users, the point was reached long ago where there is little trust that the updates and hotfixes that the software giant puts out aren't going to cause new problems. With that in mind, it will be no surprise to many that the KB4535996 update that was released late last month is causing issues for
some users.
Multiple users have posted to the Microsoft Answer Forum and the Feedback Hub reporting issues with the update. Some are reporting they are unable to install the KB4535996 update completely; the installation fails with generic error messages like 0x800f0922 and 0x80070003.
One user reported that when trying to install KB4535996, it downloads to 100%, and the install takes considerable time to reach 100%. Once a restart is requested, the machine starts to update on a blue screen where it only reaches 6% and then reboots. The system then warns that it was unable to complete the update.
Other users are reporting that the KB4535996 update installs, but they see random freeze issues, BSOD errors, and other performance-related issues. Some PCs that have sound cards inside lose sound card functionality after the update is installed. One user specifically calls out a non-functional SoundBlaster after the update. Multiple reports have indicated that the February 2020 update causes muffled or distorted sound. -
Windows update KB4535996 causes micro stutters in games windowsreport.com | Mar 3, 2020
Outdated graphics and video card drivers may cause irregular GPU frame rates. In that case, you can fix the problem by updating the drivers.
But if you had an excellent gaming experience before the CU, hardware drivers may not be the problem. Uninstalling the update appears to fix the issue, though.
Microsoft has not officially acknowledged any problem with the optional update it released last week. Users can only hope that the next Windows 10 fix will satisfactorily address all the issues raised so far.hmscott likes this. -

Windows 10 drivers will be rolled out gradually -
Well, yeah... that really sucks. I don't expect anything to be done correctly on their part. However, rolling them out gradually is probably a better approach than bundling a ton of crap all at once, as doing that could make troubleshooting issues a lot more difficult.
The notion that it is problematic assumes that the end-users are going to allow Micro$lop to run amok and give them control to manage things on a willy-nilly basis. That's probably true for an average PC user, because that is what they do. However, smart folks will not allow the haphazard antics of the Redmond Retards to wreak havoc. If you take appropriate steps to block the flow of feces nothing is going to happen without your express consent and deliberate, manual intervention. My desktop and turdbook both have Intel CPU microcode that is over a year old and I have not allowed any device driver or ME updates from Micro$lop on either machine. Windows 10: Driver updates are rolled out in waves (step by step)
good Morning March 10, 2020 10:26 4 comments
Today Microsoft announced another improvement for the driver update rollout. This change will take effect in March 2020. Microsoft also explains the procedure for the changes. Who actively uses his computer and where the probability is higher...
If you actively use your computer and where there is a higher probability of accessing the diagnostic data via the hardware ID (HWID) and computer hardware ID (CHID), you will get a new driver first. This introductory phase can then take up to eight days
During this time, Microsoft evaluates the data before the drivers are then distributed to other devices. The overall monitoring for the drivers can then take up to 30 days. Microsoft therefore hopes that the delivery quality will be better.
And what you think will be the quality drivers/firmware. Will be you worst Nightmare ever!!!! Yeah, Microsoft is very helpful push out firmware outside drivers you won't want http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...-owners-lounge.826831/page-1935#post-10995456

The fact that some people are in love with the idea of having a "digital assistant" is really scary. Having AI that uses voice recognition to execute commands while being totally isolated at the level of the local machine has some geeky cool elements to it.
