How to properly setup Windows Photo Viewer as the default image viewer

Normally, even if you set the Windows Photo Viewer as the default app to handle your images, all image file types will still open in the ugly Windows Photos Metro Apps. The reason is the Windows Photo Viewer isn't registered to handle image files.

So we need to add the file types via a reg tweak, then only would the Windows Photo Viewer appear when right clicking on an image file in order for you to set it as the default app for that image manually.

You will need to do this for every image file type such as: PNG, BMP, GIF, JPG, JPEG,etc. I normally do it for each image once and be done with it. Setting it as the default app in Control Panel > Default Apps will not work.

    1) Download the Photo Viewer Restore Reg Entry then double click on it to merge it with your registry

    2) Now go to PC Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Photo Viewer, change it to Paint, then back to Windows Photo Viewer for it to properly register all the photo extensions with the Windows Photo Viewer

I did this hack a few hours ago and it worked fine, but windows would not recognize the .reg files and i don't know what app to associate it too, I tried reg-edit but it did not work.

So i just ran reg-edit and loaded the Photo_Viewer_Restore_Win10.reg file and then restarted the computer.

    How to Delete Windows.OLD Folder

    Boot in system recovery options (command line: C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -r -o -f -t 02 -c "Restart 2 seconds!!")

Go to Click/tap on Advanced options.

    Command Prompt (Admin)

    diskpart
    list volume
    exit
    RD /S /Q "C:\Windows.old"

    (C= Win root)

NOTE: An easier way is to go to disk cleanup, cleanup system files, select previous windows installations.

WARNING: If you are still not sure you want to keep using Windows 10 and may still want to go back to your previous OS be it 7 or 8, do not cleanup the Windows.old folder as that will break the ability to revert back to the previous OS. Only do this if you are sure you want to keep Windows 10 for good.

How to Disable Windows Defender via Group Policy Editor (Does not work on Home Edition as it doesn't have the Group Policy Editor)

    Run gpedit.msc and navigate to:

    Code:
    Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Defender

Double-click on Turn off Windows Defender.

To Disable Windows Defender - Click on Enabled and Ok.

To Enable Windows Defender - Click on Not Configured or Disabled and Ok.

Note: Why disable Windows Defender when you can simply go to Control Panel > Windows Defender > Options and disable it from there? Well, because when I tried that the moment I would disable it the Windows Defender window would freeze until I do a forced restart. Maybe it was just my system but this was a clean install of Windows 10 so may the powers of the lords be with those who only have the Home Edition and not Pro if they want to disable the useless Windows Defender.

If you still want to try to disable Windows Defender on Windows 10 Home, then follow this and I hope it works for you as it didn't for me, the Windows Defender window just froze when I tried disabling it:

I have Adobe, Corel, Canon and a host of other stuff as photography is one of my hobbies. I rarely use the default photo viewer. TBH I don't have an issue using the metro version as I rarely use it at all. This includes my RAW CR2 files as this is all I take photo's in.

Coming from Windows 7 the O2Micro drivers were an issue. I found by using Windows 8.1 version of the drivers from the OEM all works fine after a reboot.

Well I wouldn't have minded to use the Photos app if the thing actually worked! When opening my .PNG files which are just basically images of my benchmarks from screenshots I took of my desktop, when opening them in the Photos app they appeared as a nice big black empty window :(

How to disable Automatic Windows Updates in Windows 10 Pro:

Disable Automatic Updates Windows 10 Pro via gpedit.msc:

Automatic Updates (Okay, the gpedit doesn't let you totally disable, but you can set to only notify you before downloading/installing):

    Just run (winkey+r): "gpedit.msc" (doesn't need quotes)

    Windows Update Shortcut

You may have noticed that in Windows 10 there is no Windows Update shortcut in the start menu and now it's not immediately accessible in Control Panel but requires a bit of digging in Control Panel > User Accounts > Make Changes to my account in PC Settings

Instead of all that nonsense, I have created a shortcut for Windows Update that you can place in your start menu or anywhere convenient, the shortcut is attached for you to download with the correct Windows Update icon.

If you want to manually create it, then right click on the desktop, select new shortcut and paste the below code in location then click next then name it as Windows Update. It won't have the correct icon though so you need to right click on it, properties, Change icon, then clear the location field of the currently displayed icons and hit enter to get all the default Windows icons, then choose the icon you like.

    Code:
    explorer ms-settings:windowsupdate
Here is how I've setup mine:

Open an admin command prompt and run this command and you will always have the F8 Windows Boot Manager menu.

This is the first thing I do when reaching the W8/W8.1/W10 desktop for the very first time.
    Code:
    bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy
Makes booting with Driver Signature Enforcement disabled or entering Safe Mode so easy, same as Windows 7.

****************** WINDOWS 10 UPGRADE WARNING TO ALL ALIENWARE OWNERS ******************

Windows 10 has blown out the display panels from my M18xR1 and M18xR2 within 24 hours of installing Windows 10. 8 beeps, no backlight, no boot. So, first time I blew it off as a one-off coincidence. Hardware fails, right. OK, but the second time, I'm ready to go ballistic now. Don't know if it is the OS or the GeForce drivers, but I don't see how it can be a a one-off coincidence twice within 24 hours.

For Windows 10 Home users, set all your Internet connections to metered and windows will never update unless you tell it to.

Also you get prompted to accept any intrusive system activity that requires the use of your Internet. This is awesome because you will know when M$ is trying to pull their crap on you.

Since WinX still doesn't have a Start Menu worth spit, do the usual Start Menu replacements work in WinX?

Yes, before Windows 10+NVIDIA's Windows 10 drivers burned out two of my 18" LCD panels I tested Classic Shell and StartIsBack and both work EXCELLENT. And, MUCH, MUCH better than the half-heinied piece of crap Micro$haft calls a Start menu.

Holy crap, did this really happen?

Man thank goodness I didn't get the update notification on my R2 yet otherwise I might have been another casualty. How the hell do you think this happened?

Well I'm somewhat non-plussed about Win10 to be honest, I've read a lot of feedback and reviews and it seems like a complete downgrade (except maybe boot time) from Win7. I'd rather to spend another 20 seconds at boot time than have to worry about Micro$haft / Skynet / Big Brother snooping into my personal life, willy nilly.

I'm actually hoping for three things at this point:

DX12 fails to make a substantial difference OR Micro$haft somehow caves and offers it for Win7, and 8 / 8.1

Micro$haft renegs the mandatory update policy.

Micro$haft fails miserably with Win10; everyone recognizes it's a complete civil liberty violating and feature regressive abomination and Ubuntu gets some kind of DX 12 alternative or Nvidia merges / captures AMD and optimizes hardware around Vulkan.

I've also had a look at your extensive performance analysis comparing Win 10 to 7 and 8.1. 10 is a flop! Add all of the very serious issues people are reporting with 353.62 and it makes upgrading right now (for tiles and Siri and spying?) an unattractive proposition.

I don't see Micro$haft remaining relevant for much longer with the PC Master Race. It is now mostly loathed by nearly everyone in the PC gaming community, and I do mean everyone.

To think that one of the biggest attractions of Win10 touted by MS, aside from personal information gleaning 'Siri', is the ability to stream XBone right onto your PC (yeah remember how Micro$haft, partnered with the NSA, thought that we would be ok with them putting a CCTV camera, "Kinect" right into our homes and then telling us that it needs to remain on 24/7?)

XBone was / is a dismal failure, now they are trying to shove it down our throats with this new-found "ability". What about all of the PC Gamers who have a PS4? Honestly, if I had to buy a console it would be the PS4! Uncharted 4, The Last of Us Remastered, Destiny etc. PS4 exclusives blow the XBone exclusives away!

That is wonderfull, so even if you disable it, when someone comes over and you manually give them a password it gets shared with all their contacts. Great, made my day, now anyone coming to my house with a windows 10 device can not use my network as I will not be letting them on.

Edit; this is insane, to protect my network I have ended all SSID's with "_optout", including guest networks. put the PC on the guest network for now to be safe. even with all this a visitor on my guest network could be bandwidth sharing. Ah, come on, this is just getting out of control. Someone seriously needs to stop them!

And do not let someone elses W10 device on your network either as then you will have no control at all as to what it does. There is no FUD with that at all, and if there is it is well justified!

    Turn off data tracking

Don't forget to turn off data tracking service (find it under administration tools > computer manager > services and applications > services > data tracking service > disable and add DWORD 32bit "AllowTelemetry" with a value of 0 under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Policies/Microsoft/Windows/DataCollection.

You can block them in your hosts file with 127.0.0.1 if you want

The tool does the same thing but just in case you wanted to see where your information heads to or you wanted to update your hosts file manually

Enjoy your privacy now after watching this video to turn off all privacy related options in PC Settings:

    Before/During Installation

    • Do not use Express Settings. Hit Customize, and make sure everything is turned off.
    • It's strongly preferred that you use a local account with Windows 10.
    After Installation

    • Head to Settings > Privacy, and disable everything, unless there are some things you really need.
    • While within the Privacy page, go to Feedback, select Never in the first box, and Basic in the second box.
    • Head to Settings > Update and Security > Advanced Options > Choose how updates are delivered, and turn the first switch off.
    • Disable Cortana by clicking the Search bar/icon.
    • (Optional) Disable web search in Search by going to Settings, and turning off Search online and include web results.
    • Change the name of your PC by going to Start (or hitting the Windows key), typing About PC, and clicking Rename PC.
    Slightly Complex

    • Open up the Command Prompt by launching cmd as an administrator, and enter the following:
    sc delete DiagTrack

    sc delete dmwappushservice

    echo "" > C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Diagnosis\ETLLogs\AutoLogger\AutoLogger-Diagtrack-Listener.etl

    • Open up the Group Policy Editor by launching gpedit.msc as an administrator. Go through Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds. Double click Telemetry, hit Disabled, then apply. NOTE: This only truly works in the Enterprise edition, but the final step provides a decent enough workaround for Pro users.

    • While still in the Group Policy Editor, go through Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > OneDrive, double click Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage, hit Enabled, then apply.

    • While still in the Group Policy Editor, go through Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender, double click Turn Off Windows Defender, hit Enabled, then apply.

    • Open up the Registry Editor by launching regedit as an administrator. Go through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\DataCollection, select AllowTelemetry, change its value to 0, then apply.

    • First, download the Take Ownership tweak and enable it. Then, head to the Hosts File by going through C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc, take ownership of the hosts file, and add all of the IPs from this page into the file.
    Up To You

    • Replace Microsoft Edge/Internet Explorer with Firefox, Chromium, or any forks/variations of them.
    • Replace Windows Media Player with VLC or MPC-HC
    • Replace Groove Music with Foobar2000, Winamp, or MusicBee.
    • Replace Photos/Windows Photo Viewer with ImageGlass or IrfanView.

Um, you need to specifically enable sharing for each network.

What I meant is if you let them into your network via giving them your password then their system is handing over the info to contact in that other persons system. Not that I doubt the security of my system but do I trust the security of theirs?

Usually visitors here also need access to printers so they have to have a password. This is why before today I had never setup a guest network. Form now I have setup the "_optout" on my SSID's but I still worry as while we are assured there are no security risks we are assured that about just about everything that eventually holes are found in. Nothing like this is ever 100% risk free.

A few tricks, tips & fixes from other threads as well (thanks to the original posters), thought worth to be posted here. Apologies, If there's stuff which is already posted..

    Win10 Registry Tweaks
Another tool which nixes all Windows X Spyware, BS

    Removing core apps, from powershell
    PortableWU tool
Cortana to use google if you are using "her"

    Block all data logging
    Disable Sign in background

And Don't forget to ditch the update delivery system to disable P2P, bandwidth sharing, If you want auto-updates.
Warning for all Alienware Users with Samsung panels be careful -> here

Really unfortunate for the Win10 RTM to be bugged and spyware infested with horrbile UI. Utter disappointment. A Win7 SP2 / Win8.1.1 SP would have been a gazillion times better !!

And you expect them to be savvy enough to enable sharing of the password for every new network they encounter? My point still stands. I get that you don't want to put your security in their hands, but at least the default is safer than you're assuming.

I give my password to all visitors that I trust. My issue is I can not secure their systems after they leave. While on a day to day, yes it is probably safe right now but I do not trust the process and that there will never be a vulnerability in it that could place me in jeopardy. I will say again no advanced feature like this is 100% safe, saying it is then is just downright irresponsible and to be truthful anyone who really believes that it is, well nuff said (Reminiscent of "even God can't sink this ship").

Also friends become enemies and sometimes friends can be worst than enemies. My other issue, as it is yet untested here, how will those devices show up on the router and its logs etc. I imagine on the primary PC I will not see them on my general network etc.

So the "_optout" as a fix it should stay, but I hate to see everyone forced to use it. This is the same with disabling the feature itself. Again everyone is able to determine what tweaks or fixes they require.

Add "_optout" to your SSID ... seriously? That's their fix? This should be something that is manually activated, not enabled by default. You should have to add "_optin" to your SSID to make it work, not the other way around.

All this security crap should be required to enable manually. To have to physically go and turn it on. Not just a prompt "Let Windows Enable Wi-Fi Sense". Problem is this will take years to get any traction in the justice department, at least in USA. I'm hoping European courts jump on this ASAP. They seem too be pretty expeditious and actually take privacy rights seriously.

Because the gpedit (group-policy editor) is only available in Pro and Enterprise, since its a tool for Administrators to deploy and admin PCs.

The update Show/Hide tool should work but there is no Group Policy Editor in the Home Edition
