XP was available in a 64-bit guise as well, but not too many manufacturers developed drivers for it at the time hence it never gained the popularity of its 32-bit sibling.
-
-
Yes they made XP 64 bit but noone has it. So basically XP is a 32 bit OS. There are more and more 64 bit OS adopters with each new OS release. I mean there are 32 bit Windows 8.1 users just more people have 64 bit because that's what they purchased.

That was known for those who read articles about upcoming Jan preview, not sure if it was in the thread.
I feel thick of bluish, purple and white already just based on screenshots. If people won't customize builds with changed design since beginning... who am I lying? I won't use it anyway if they don't fix start menu+Aero.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
My guess, with the entire UI, is they are getting ready for the resurgence of 8 bit displays but at high definition.

Ohhhh, people, there are some HILARIOUS rumors about Free Windows 10 upgrade.
I call it hilarious because if MS do this after promises of Free Windows 10 they will put themselves is such a that they might never release themselves from it.FIRST. Free Windows 10 will be a Limited Edition... no, not right... Free Windows 10 will be limited edition (yeah, now correct) of Windows 10! And to make it full you will have to buy a key which will magically unveil full Window 10 to you! How is that? Happy already? That's not all because you don't know why this is hilarious. Go to the next step.
SECOND: Limited means... it will only support 1 (one) physical processor, 2 (two) physical cores, 8GB of RAM, disabled encryption, domens support, some goodies of DX12, group policies and Remote Desktop.
List is not full.
And guess we all agree that they deserved that
Surely it is unconfirmed and is just a rumors with all which follows this.Last edited by a moderator: Mar 19, 2015 -
Person who started this rumor, what is he/she on?

killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
If this is just a rumour (for now), why are you already losing your crap?
Chill man! -
He/She just asked for more detailed info about Free Windows Upgrade someone who works there. MS really wants to get more money through Windows store, not just selling Windows but without totally breaking rules of Free cheaze is only in a mouse-trap. Sure everything might be changed by the summer so don't look at this like on solid truth but this is good information to think of.
P.S. I updated my original post just for some possible reasons and that missed information is not useful for average gamer anyways (even I don't know what those things mean). Please update your quote too.
Nobody asks you to act somehow, I highlighted it's a rumor, so keep your cr@p or move on. -
So basically it's a trap and M$ is copying Apple/Google again
-
Well, I don't think that you won't be able to revert to Windows 7/8, otherwise that would really be a trap, for sure. MS is doing a logical move: amount of app's developer is proportional to how many people use app store. You don't need to use computer as an IT/business'/encoding machine to use App Store, even furthermore, who will buy those silly apps on a working machine? But we all know that 2 physical core limit changes everything because since 2010 it is easy to find a quad-core even in a laptop just for games and not for enterprise stuff.
-
Those arbitrary and completely silly restrictions are what make the rumor not believable. Even modern Atom SoC in Windows tablets are quad-core nowadays.

Sounds like total BS (and/or maybe just a description of the stripped down version for IoT devices, i.e. RaspPi2).
"For the first time, a new version of Windows for small footprint IoT devices will be available – for free – when Windows 10 launches. Windows 10 will offer versions of Windows for a diverse set of IoT devices, ranging from powerful devices like ATMs and ultrasound machines, to resource constrained devices like gateways. Through key partnerships with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, Intel, Qualcomm and others, we will provide great options for commercial devices builders, hobbyists and students." -
Slap anyone in the face who believes the rumor. Not a mean slap, just one to get them back to reality.

There you have it folks, a pirated OS can be updated, but it won't make it legit. -
It seems an UEFI is required in order to get it installed..
-
That's a pirate-trap. You upgrade from non-legit, you agree on new modded license agreement where MS can use private info against PC user, you are sued by MS based on proofs from your own computer. Makes sense.ajkula66 likes this.

I can't have any sympathy for pirates. They don't pay so they can't expect any support. Only fair from paying customers point of view.
tijo likes this. -
I don't know what MS plans to gain from allowing non genuine Windows to upgrade to Windows 10? Pirates are always going to pirate regardless. They'll just wait for a cracked version to appear and download that instead.
What MS should have done was allow paying customers to upgrade for free and charge pirates $15 to go from non genuine to genuine. -
So that's like a supper cheap version?
-
Oki-doki, installed latest Win10 10041 build and they added transparency to start menu and search bar when task panel is vertical (glitched bit). Resize icon is NOT resize, it's mode switcher desktop/metro. They learn but VERY SLOWLY.
Nvidia drivers aré installing right now so more details later today. -
I think it's less "allowing" and more along the lines that checking for activation bypasses is cat & mouse, and given how Windows is going to be essentially free for a year, investing a ton of time and resource (and code) into it may not be worth it.
Of course the bypasses may do some of the work for MS, as depending on how it's done it can be quite shaky and trying to do an OS upgrade over one may just break Windows anyway. Allowing pirates to blow up their own installs sounds pretty entertaining. -
New trashbox icon is... just WOW.
And this how it looked in Win95. Not sure what looks better.
-
All I'll say is a picture is worth a thousand words and that new icon speaks volumes.

It looks like they are carrying over their flat theme from Windows 8 to W10. It doesn't look to bad.
-
This is Windows we're talking about - if you really don't like the Recycle Bin Icon you can always customise it to a different one of your choice. I don't think Microsoft has gone so far as to block custom icons yet!
I'm personally really looking forward to Windows 10 - mostly for the improved high PPI support, greater UI consistency and of course DX12. It can't come soon enough! -
Re read what I said because you missed the point.
If someone is going to pirate Windows they'll download a cracked version that bypasses and fools activation so they can download patches and updates. When MS fixes the issue another cracked version of Windows will show up. It's a cat and mouse game Microsoft will never win.
If Microsoft really wanted to convert pirates, what they should have done was to charge them a small amount. They are still making revenue to encourage a pirate to go legit. -
There used to be a lot pirated MS Office. Now I don't believe there are as much. There used to be a lot pirated XP and 7, now I don't thing there are as much of Windows 8. Microsoft increases "security" by protecting it from pirates. You create a Microsoft account and use Windows store? Then it's impossible to pirate Windows. And who needs a hassle of pirating if you can use your old OS sticker on notebook and make a free upgrade?.. Unless it gonna be that limited as those rumors tell which I wrote before. But perhaps those limits are for non-activated Win10? Where non-legit Windows was upgraded to?

That is because Win8 is a worthless O/S that is the reason why no on wants to pirate it.
They can try but always in the end the Pirates get the better of MS. Trust me WinX will be hacked and activated-if you can make it they can break it. That's MS Business model....Rodster likes this. -
No one wanted Windows Vista and no one wants Windows 8/8.1, not even the pirates. I have 6 legit copies of Windows 8.1 Pro but if I wanted a cracked copy of Windows 8.1 Pro i'd know just where to go. They're out there if you know where to look.
-
Arrg, I had to let win10 go. Version 9926 keep crashing every 5 minutes and the latest version10024 (I think) Safe mode could not be loaded, and the Nvidia drivers would not install. I kept getting, "The inf. file line could not be found, I tried 349.90, 349.56, and 347.88 none could be loaded. Back to win8.1.
-
Latest build is very unstable for me. It goes from simple and safe bug like "no search bar appearing under the Start Menu" to a more severe and danger bugs like "yesterday launched video in Fullscreen in PotPlayer and then couldn't get out of it by mouse." No button worked on mouse except for wheel for volume. I was liyng in a bed and didn't want to get up. In Windows 7 there is a tablet keyboard which goes out of the side so I can press ctrl+Shift+Alt but in Windows 8 and above it doesn't :mad. I got up, pressed power to put asleep. This morning turned it on and player began to continue playing video! So had to press ctrl+alt+delete and then it worked. It's BETA so I get it. It should have bugs. Just not so many, please.
-
I don't know why you think this but it is absolutely untrue.
-
They might be doing this already. If you know where to look, there are plenty of dealers selling Windows keys at ridiculously low prices, anywhere from around $2 to somewhere a bit lower than legitimate prices. Those are retail keys, not leaked volume licenses, which means MS could stop them easily if it wants to. But those keys still work, so...
-
They are most likely abusing a Microsoft program that allows start up business get free access to entire MS retail software.
MS are most concerned is when their customers expects genuine, MS goes nuts explaining that their customers is running genuine. -
That would backfire catastrophically. Legitimising and rewarding piracy in such a way would drastically increase piracy rates as legitimate, paying customers would see it as grossly unfair - and subsequently pirate windows in order to gain access to the discount.
Basically, it would encourage piracy and reduce revenue as well as p*ssing off legitimate customers. That's not what Microsoft wants.Mr.Koala likes this. -
Yep. They can allow people to use their products with a small price unofficially. But they should never ever accept those installs as genuine.
-
Is this like those East European gray/black market resellers of stolen game CD keys? Ha! Wait until M$ cracks down and blacklists them. QQ
-
The problem is they have been doing this for years, from the very beginning of Windows 7 cycle if not earlier.. MS would do something about it a long time ago if it ever wants to.
The activation still goes through MS's server. Unless those keys are stolen at random and impossible to trace, MS could block them easily. -
My personal advice: if you want to update build of your Windows 10 then either do it at night so would go asleep while it updates itself or... use USB stick and make clean install.
Yesterday, after it finally downloaded and prepared for install, it took 1.5 hours on my HDD (50GB partition) to get to 54% of installing and 16% of total progress. I just power drained because wanted a PC and got another 20 minutes of checking file system on that drive by Windows 7 (I could skip but missed time).
As one source told me that it is due Windows 10 likes to use threaded data for files and such multithreaded file is easily digested by ReFS but is hardly done by NTFS unless it's on SSD. So it's unconfirmed if Windows 10 gonna keep such behavior but IMO it won't and gonna hate HDDs+NTFS.
P.S. I have a feeling that Windows 8 and higher doesn't like HDDs as much because Windows 7 because I saw multiple "my Winodws 8 hiccups and HDD activity is at 100%" before.Last edited: Apr 5, 2015 -
Toke about 1.5 hour for ISO download+install and fast ring 10049 download+install on a SSD. just did it today.

All this is rumor and speculation... let's chill out until we get some solid sources and facts.
