Shop smarter with Microsoft Edge's helpful new price change alerts pcworld.com
Microsoft's Edge browser already has coupons, price comparisons, and historical pricing. Now it's adding new features to its mobile and desktop browsers just in time for Black Friday and holiday shopping.
Today, Microsoft said it’s adding even more: automatic alerts of price changes, and a migration of its coupon and price-history features to the mobile version of Microsoft Edge.
Edge is now taking price tracking a step further. Soon, Edge will use your browsing history to keep an eye on products you’ve viewed, and if that product changes in price, Edge will let you know. (Edge often uses the URL bar as a message center, with notifications that slide out. Presumably, Microsoft will also use this to notify you of price changes.) -

Microsoft says it “does not collect a fee for connecting users to loan providers,” but as numerous commenters below have pointed out, that statement has loopholes big enough to drive a truck through. A Microsoft spokeswoman declined to say if the company received other forms of remuneration.

Windows 11 a Flop, Survey Claims Less Than 1% Upgraded, Microsoft Improves Start Menu techpowerup.com | Today
Microsoft Windows 11, now nearing its third month since release, is for all intents and purposes, a flop. Market research by Lansweeper, which surveyed over 10 million PCs across the commercial and personal market segments, reports that less than 0.21% of the users it surveyed, had upgraded from Windows 10 to the newer operating system. The upgrade is free of charge. There may be several factors contributing to this lukewarm market response, but one of them is certain to he the steep hardware requirements. Windows 11 requires a trusted platform module (TPM 2.0), which disqualifies PCs older than 2018 for upgrades, unless the user is willing to try out workarounds to the limitation. Another factor could be the clunky user interface (UI), a less functional Start menu than Windows 10, and several UI-related bugs.
According to Lansweeper's data, there could be more people running outdated Windows XP, Vista, Windows 8, etc., than Windows 11, and this poses a great security risk, as these operating systems are no longer supported by Microsoft for regular security updates. Windows 10, on the other hand, is eligible for them until mid-2025—plenty of time for people to upgrade hardware to meet Windows 11 system requirements, or to simply make up their mind on switching over to the new operating system. In related news, Microsoft could give the Windows 11 Start menu a functional update. Test build 22509 introduces the ability to add more pins to the menu, or make room for more recommendations. The UI could see many such minor updates.

"Newer has to be better"... in 2009 when it could be argued that Windows 7 was a step forward from such systems as Windows ME and Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard could be considered a great development from Mac OS X 10.0. 2021 is a different time and the only capability of Windows 11 I actually like is the Android app compatibility (I just can't stand newer versions of Android than Nougat and the less I have to use a smartphone, the better) but the rest screams for a "Windows 7 make over". A proper taskbar is a must, a proper start menu (the classical one) is also a must and the interface while being a partial step forward (Settings seems a bit more refined than in Windows 10 but still far behind trusty old Control Panel) so it will take Windows 11 LTSC with WindowBlinds for W11 together with a start menu replacement and a lot of "restoring Control Panel" tweaking before it could make sense to upgrade.
The funniest of all is all propaganda about the need to update, update, update and update again for the sake of it. Unless everything is updated, major dangers lurk around the corner of the PC... Eventually I would just use a bare bones stripped out Windows 11 whose only function is to launch a VM running Windows 7 and another VM running Linux. That leave two things for W11: Aforementioned VM and Android apps using WSA.
It is pretty fascinating to see the start menu. I fail to see how the original version that came with Windows 95 and the classic Apple menu in System 7/Mac OS 8-9 would need those kind of "enhancements" when it provides a quick, logical way to access applications. It is way faster to launch neatly organized applications using the fold-out menus over scrolling through the W10 variant not to mention the W11 ditto.
I would use W7 in a virtual machine already if Classic Shell didn't exist. -

macOS is not a good reference point since it is the operating system that can't run a lot of applications written for "itself" as in "earlier versions". The issue here is that Apple force users to upgrade to new versions because applications require them; otherwise you will enjoy an endless "in order to update X, you need to upgrade macOS to Y" followed by "Z can't run on newer versions of macOS than A". If a Mac is "too old" (old in this case means a MacBook Pro running 10.10.x Yosemite), a lot of issues arise when trying to pair the "right" version of an application to the "right" version of the system. It reminds me of getting 16 KB more conventional memory under DOS or trying to fix the VXD errors popping up in Windows 95.
Windows 10 feels like a polished diamond in comparison with what macOS became. My favorite systems were Mac OS 8/9 and Mac OS X once upon a time and they even had good compatibility with "themselves" but macOS give me high blood pressure.
If Microsoft would like to get inspiration from other systems in order to improve things: Use Amiga OS, BeOS, Mac OS 8/9, Mac OS X (10.1-10.6.8) and Linux as their reference points. Using macOS as a source would only bring a miserable Windows 12 were a new version of Edge require Windows 12.1, 12.2, 12.3 and where applications updated for 12.3 can't run on 12.0 or 12.1.
Apple has introduced a new low standard for operating systems and Google are following close behind with Android and Chrome OS (Android was good until 8/Oreo came out and turned into a turd when 9/Pie launched).
The final result will probably be using Windows 11 as a "launcher" for VMWare set to autoboot a VM running Windows 7 Ultimate and/or Linux.
I.e. Windows 11 boot to desktop, VMWare launches right away into the Windows 7 VM. -

What I have seen so far hasn't indicated any benefits offered by Windows 11 on "pre-Alder Lake" hardware beside WSA. Windows 10 LTSC is a better option than attempting to debloat and tame any "regular" edition of Windows 11 (the same applies to Windows 10).
