I've tried W11 from both install paths; upgrading from W10 and a clean install. Is it worth it? That depends on what your expectations are and what you want your computer to do. It doesn't bring anything to the table that W10 can't currently provide. The graphical updates are minor and often unwanted. For example, the changes to the right-click contextual menu on the desktop remove several handy functions in favor of an icon-laden approach with no text. This doesn't do anything for me and frustrates established workflows, requiring me to relearn steps in tasks that were reflexive. There are 3rd party applications that can restore functionality but now you're trying to make W11 look and behave like W10, which begs the question, why upgrade?

In a nutshell, W11 doesn't do anything better than W10, and in many ways is a step backward. Unless you have an Alder Lake CPU, you're likely better off sticking with W10. There are likely corner use-cases that might say different, but if you are a casual consumer, I'd wait.

 

It sucks. Slower. Inefficient GUI. Reduced functionality.
And, it is extremely ugly.

It is only good for people that automatically accept the notion that newer is always better with no legitimate basis for believing it.

Moral of the story seems to be: Wait with Windows 11 until LTSC is available and/or a similar version if Microsoft decide to rebrand it to IoT (such as Windows 11 IoT rather than Windows 11 LTSC). I thought that 11 was a good idea for Alder Lake/Big.Little designs but also read about some benchmarking between Windows 10 and 11 on PCs with both 11th Gen and 12th Gen where the important conclusion was "similar performance". I.e. no performance gains of 10-15% on Alder Lake when compared to Windows 10 on the same hardware.

That would imply that installing Windows 10 LTSC 2021 on Alder Lake is a good idea.

 

Well... none of it is a " good" idea. LTSC is just not as horrible an idea. Look at it like normal Windoze is colon cancer and LTSC is herpes. They both suck, but it's not a hard decision which one to choose.

 

In comparison with Android 9, 10, 11 and 12 - not to mention iOS - I must admit that even Windows 11 Home Edition feels like heaven. The only alternative I can see at this time would be Linux with Wine or something - yet another option is to simply run Windows 7 Ultimate in a VM, which is the route I am thinking about eventually. Most of those applications and games I like to use are for Windows 7 anyway and the beauty of a VM is that it is easy to have a backup of it too.

After I have experienced the bottom of the bottom of operating systems, which are "mobile systems" of 2018-2022 models (I still prefer Windows Mobile to this day and if it were possible to buy new devices running it I would do so in a heartbeat) I am more "open" to Windows 10 even if my preferences are Mac OS X 10.6 and earlier or Windows 7, not to mention Mac OS 8/9 and Amiga OS.

I take a Windows 11 PC or tablet PC all day long over an iPad or Android tablet. My main issues with Windows 11 are the dumbing down aspect, which kind of "work" on a tablet such as a Surface Go but is highly problematic on a bigger screen. My own solution for a 2-in-1 would be Windows 11 for "tablet mode" and Windows 7 Ultimate in a VM for "desktop mode".

Edit: The worst operating system I have used is "unrooted Android 9 and newer". If the device running it comes from a carrier and is a Samsung, even Windows 10 or 11 Home Edition feels very "debloated"... Don't forget the ads too.

I shared a few of my opinions on the Android direction in the past ( Android P, Android Q and even latest changes in this thread) Android is dead, it's dying of Apple obsession. Just like every other hardware and software company out there. The only phone which I could buy today with SD slot, 3.5mm jack, non mutilated display & BL unlock is Sony Xperia 1 Mark III unfortunately Sony didn't attempt to fix the Scoped Storage Filesystem castration and thus SD card performance took a hit and Qcomm trashdragon 888 is an overheating pile of trash and Sony's cooling solution doesn't help at all on top of lack of proper 5G support in US despite being officially available. Also that new Smarthome growth, horrible future.

The idea of these companies is simple - Keep consumer / user in the dark. They remove and downgrade features because they say it simplifies, this is the core theme. Apple controls all these minds easily not just from a Technical point of view but also their News apps, same for Windows 11 now look at those widgets, they promote the news which they like. So all in all technology is made more simplified and downgraded. Hardware also same, BGA trash, soldered junktops which do not have any possibility of extending their life from SSD, Memory, Wifi, CPU, GPU all are dead now. With more Thin and Light shipments moving than DIY socketed PCs things are going to become worse. Also Apple is making new VR coming in as well which will transform the world into a more zombiefied consume the product do not ask questions more amplified.

Kids in the school are being given Chrome OS, horrendous garbage OS which has same Sandboxed filesystem like latest Android or iOS. So once the younger generation is set with this seed of corruption. Latest US Infrastructure Bill allows the American Vehicles from 2026 to have a Killswitch which is used in case the Driver is needed to be immobilized this is by Law. This is why they push all these new Hybrid and Connected Car technologies and those horrible Electric only cars which run a full x86 processor with an OS on top of direct LTE/5G Satellite connection 24.7.

Windows 11 is probably the biggest transitional phase. Like Windows 8, they are going to double down on everything. As we see Control Panel is being downgraded already. And entire fundamentals of OS of Windows - Explorer.exe, Shell32, Context Menu, UWP system (nasty garbage Filesystem lockdown) and more.

So unfortunately even if LTSC arrives for Windows 11 in 2023-24 the OS will be a mess. The corporation doesn't care at all, they only care - Data Harvesting and WaaS money influx from Enterprise contracts.

Oh yes Android 9 and up are worst pieces of JUNK OSes ever made. I will agree that Windows 11 trashware is infinitely better than that smartphone OS which is a leash at this point due to forced 2FA and constantly requiring authentication on almost all the online services. At-least we can remove the cancer from Windows 11 iso by DISM tools but with Android it's impossible to revert back AOSP killing blows and Hardware planned obsolescence.

One of the few beneficial things that has come from all of COVID-19 mess is more and more parents are being awakened to see what is and has been happening in the school system and many are taking action to mitigate the damage already done. Sadly, some of the parents that don't want to put up with it and resist the nonsense are being unjustly persecuted and labeled really stupid things like "domestic terrorists" by those whose agenda has been exposed.

I gave up on Android. The last version I keep using are 7.1.2 Nougat with Xposed for some bedside browsing (Kiwi Browser) and went with an iPhone SE as a "wallet" (I use it for two things essentially which is Apple Pay/payment services and ID apps) and for everything else I simply use Windows. I.e. I minimize smartphone use as much as possible and have started to actively avoid products that relies on apps. It is too much headache already with all questions being generated (users who can't sign in because "too old version", apps that suddenly stop working for arbitrary reasons, services that stop working for similar reasons and so on and so forth in an endless loop). The hardware is also inferior (I rather use a Chuwi for around $200 with Windows LTSC than paying $1000+ for a "flagship" that comes with a locked bootloader, carrier bloatware and "three years of system updates"). Buying devices from carriers are out of the question and I don't visit carrier stores (and also walk straight past device sections in stores like Best Buy).

Why should I buy an Android device when Android 12 is a copy of iOS from a company whose "vision" clearly is to make iPhones (Google iPhone, sorry Pixel) with third party OEMs sharing the same "vision" when there is an iPhone SE in the market and everything "non payment related" is better on Windows anyway?

Buying "app dependent" equipment is going to lead to a lot of frustration when it turns out that you HAVE TO UPDATE constantly, endure modified interfaces and artificial breakage (i.e. the app can't run on system version Y, the app stop working from date X, in order to continue to use the product, please update to the new version of the app and please buy a new smartphone if your current one is "too old") in a never ending circle.

I did use Sony devices before but stopped when they failed to replace the Xperia Z Ultra. There are no devices made in 2021 or 2022 that I consider acceptable or even close to my requirements. iPhone SE is OK as a wallet and work really well as such but only because I simply modified my demands by using Windows for everything else, thus transitioning to PCs as "smartphone replacements". One decent thing with the iPhone SE is the ability to walk into an Apple Store without having to endure carrier BS or "band issues" (i.e. the whole debate about whether Android device X are good or not depending on band support for carrier Y).

The more I have been looking into things, the more I have concluded that the best solution is to simply take Windows 11, install VMWare and then Windows 7 Ultimate and run the latter in full screen. One major benefit is also the ability to "bring" such a VM with me on an external drive, thus enabling to use it everywhere even on other computers in a similar fashion as "Windows to go". Since I have a preference for 2-in-1 designs (I consider it a brilliant solution, especially as a smartphone replacement), I have realized that going with a VM Windows 7 installation allow optimum use of the form factor to its full extent when moving between docked (Windows 7) and portable/tablet modes (Windows 11).

Edit: What also killed Android for me were the growing "anti-root cult" on Android Central and Android Police where all artificial restrictions were being praised with a constant "lecturing" about how "ordinary people doesn't need/knows about things" and how "Android is so mature now so root isn't needed so it doesn't matter that the BL is locked" and so on. It told me that the community is downgraded and I realized that wasting energy on that platform is a bad idea, Windows here I come instead.

It is pretty evident that smartphones are used as tools of indoctrination and dumbing down paired with psychological manipulation. It start to remind me of an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation called "The Game". It is enough to see how people are getting in their car but just can't drive away, letting another waiting driver in to their lot because... during the walk from the supermarket, their darling Smartphone gave Facebook/Twitter notifications and they MUST post their grocery purchase and click "like" on 25 posts before they can get going.

Resisting smartphones are good for the mental health and avoiding "social media" a really health conscious choice.

 

The kids shouldn't be exposed to any "education system" if said system are using text books, study material and so on that has been "vetted" according to destructive ideologies. The only way to mitigate the issue is for the parents to self-educate their kids using "non-damaging" books and other material published "before" problematic ideologies started to do harm. I would say that this issue is far deeper than a matter of "public" or "private" education and require strict avoidance of mainstream media, social media and problematic literature. It is also a bad time to teach the kids that "you can buy quality" by implying that "private" is going to be a "solution" when we have corporations (private to boot) that also control such things as text books. The only time "private" could work here is when like-minded parents run their own educational institution, without letting said corporations and/or politicians fiddle around with same.

Similar issues can be seen with health care and "Big Pharma". It could be called "Health Care as a Service" since the purpose isn't "care" or "healing sick" but rather creating a dependency on medicines (that essentially require "subscriptions" for the rest of your life) and other services (since the "issue" here is that healthy people don't need "health care", thus going against the basic business interests of said corporations).

All issues can be boiled down to one thing: Greed. It is also greed that create the strong push for anti-intellectualism, anti-knowledge and anti-education movements including the mantra "it should not be necessary to learn anything about anything/X" (a common phrase when dumbed down products and services are being defended).

Yeah I still have android 5 on my s5 and I also have android 10 on my A01 and I've been amazed at how much control is missing and how much harder it is to just do simple things in 10. For instance to turn up/down screen brightness on the s5 is just the pull down menu, that's not available on Android 10. To turn on power saving and ultra power saving mode in Android 5 is possible from the pull down menu, not available in Android 10. Maybe it's the samsung overlay differences but it's really limited nonetheless. Win10 no different, 100 menus, hidden settings, taking control away to infantilize people as much as possible. The marxist stateasgod mentality and the the stateasgod owned by those who believe they have a mandate from god to "heal the world". I've noticed the infantilazation especially of places like japan where it's so regimented and OCD, you can see it from just the games that come out of there like yakuza and just the UI of their ported games. In every ported japanese videogame I've ever played, to quit the game completely is a multistep process, you'd know what I mean if you've played a few. Making helpless babies through societal structuring.

 

What I think is really fascinating with smartphones is how much abuse people tolerate without waking up. They are being urinated on every day and yet, they behave like their life depend on that device in an endless vicious cycle. Flagship smartphones are great examples since it is evident that people have a blind faith in them. So strong is the faith that they:

1. Insist and tell themselves that the "latest flagship" is a "must-buy" using such arguments as "the best camera" and "the best display" while some people also add "microSD card slot, stylus, headphone jack" to the list of "must-have flagship features worth paying extra for".
2. Willingly accept price increases on said flagships, using the arguments above.
3. Buying them from carriers which affect competition and distribution chains (supporting a middle man that simply filter out 99% of the devices from a given market and create the highly abnormal condition of "competing through installment plans" rather than technology and innovation. I.e. people base their choice on "whether carrier X offer the device on an installment plan" telling themselves that their life depend on those things.
4. Accepting and defending their devices and associated prices with such arguments as "it is worth paying more for something you use for many hours per day" and "it is just two pizzas more per month!" etc.
5. Telling themselves that they "need" to buy a new flagship in 2022 since their "old" one from 2020 is "old" and the "camera isn't great" despite their arguments back then circulated on the camera being the best ever created. It also means that they are perfectly happy with their $1500 purchase being thrown out after just two years so another $1500 can be wasted (buying from a carrier typically set them back approx. $100/month depending on device and plan, thus leading to $2400 or more being signed away for two years).

I must say that it is highly amusing to read posts where people make it sound like they are driving a car that is disintegrating literally speaking where a flagship from 2020 is described as a disaster waiting to happen and that they can't wait to run to their carrier store to get the new thing of 2022. How a product can go from being the "best ever" in 2022 to be a complete wreck that need immediate replacement in 2022 is beyond me.

It is also interesting to see how "updates" is a sales argument and that people willingly accept and even defend the validity of "paying extra" to get "three years of system updates and four years of security patches" when a $200 Chuwi can get TEN YEARS of updates with LTSC and can run any new version of Windows for as long as the hardware is up to the task, rather than having a set "death clock" that start ticking right away on launch.

Another interesting aspect is that the same people are perfectly happy with their device pushing ads on them and also collect their data since their primary argument is that "root is no good because SafetyNet" and "ordinary people doesn't root" followed by "Android is so mature now so root isn't needed" to start preaching AdGuard and VPN adblock in the next sentence. So they are perfectly happy to plunk down $1500 on a device whose system they can't control and are perfectly happy to not only accept it (including buying devices with active anti-root measures built in such as Samsung Knox) but also defend the situation...

Smartphones are a very interesting study of human psychology and it feels more and more like a "drug" used for population control. It is no longer an innocent little mobile device but rather a tool of indoctrination and control including breast feeding (the carrier decide which devices you are allowed to buy, Google decides how your system should function and what ads you should see and the app providers decides which apps you are allowed to install based on region/location and what services you are allowed to use). It is a complete chain of control from beginning to the end. Even the purchase frequency is controlled through updates but also installment plans and contracts where "24 months" is a magic number. To make their eyes glisten like a little kid on Christmas day, all you have to do is to tell them that "I have good news for you, you are eligible for an early upgrade!". That's the best news their ear can hear since it means that they are now able to sign away another $2400 on top of those dollars they signed away last time...

Windows 11 with WSA have potential to act as a liberator despite all dumbing down since it make it easier to reduce smartphone dependency. It can also help with getting over the "flagship dependency" (it is not healthy to be dependent on burning $1500 every two years for a smartphone) by allowing a compact PC to take over most things while the smartphone can be used for very specific use cases (such as payments using Apple Pay and/or Google Pay).

Another issue with the concept of buying smartphone flagships is that it signal that it is perfectly fine to rip you off by charging more for less. Even if trying to come up with different arguments the fact remains, namely that the device is being purchased, thus sending the signal to the carriers and OEMs that they are doing the "right thing".

The biggest issue with Android is the "army" of people defending the system and the hardware with different arguments that are centered on a "deep understanding" and "appreciation" of "getting less for more money", which also prevent improvements and reversal of the degradation process.

I have a device with Android 10 and the system is OK for two things: authentication and Google Pay but is a major annoyance for anything else. The result is that I only used it for those two things before transitioning to iOS (which I also use for the very same purpose, while everything else is done using Windows and/or Linux).

 

This kind of stuff was discussed more in the phones/tablets section a while back but here's a bit more of my experience.

Yeah I really am fine with my s5 and don't need more but it's not easy to find genuine new batteries or even quality replacement batteries any more. I have 3 batteries between 2 s5's but they both seem very wonky lately, "android OS" seems to be eating up the battery at an alarming rate most of the time, because I barely use my phone other than checking email and the occasional text. Airplane mode at night etc I don't bank on it, I get my apps from apkpure-apkmirror never had a problem, don't use play store, no google account to this but I have used my number to confirm a gmail account and also have a google voice number tied to it but those are largely useless now as far as craigslist posts and other things. I also have a Note 4 backup and another s5 too.

Agree with the major carrier BS, it's not hard to get an unlocked used phone off ebay and then get a boyp package from an mvno but people are trained to officialdom to a shocking degree really. The people who I've seen with top level phones are REALLY bad with impulse control, usually have terrible credit ratings, buy junk or are just simple minded when it comes to these rapacious marxist-corporate beasts that we are prisoners of. FOR business SURE FINE but normal use? Young people are really in a terrible situation but don't even realize it.

The A01 was used for like 30 bucks as a modern backup. BUT I don't want or need more than the s5 for personal use, have simple apps only, camera is still fine, like the physical button, phone is not as long as modern ones etc Got my s5 used for less than 80$ about 3 years ago coming from an s4.

There is a concerted plan to all this, they've been telling us that for decades but no one seems to take it seriously. The confusion serves only those who want to bring their order out of it if you know what I'm referencing. Pretty much all fields of endeavor are subverted to it in some way, subtle(ISO standards, sjw, etc etc etc etc) or not so subtle(war/ emergency control for dubious false reasons, rule by emergency real or arranged/imagined). It's not any different with technology, in fact tech is a major pillar of it all. We are actually androids, partly flesh/blood partly machine like a human car driver, one big android. Control the environment control/mold the person, torture would be an example of that but the one way totalitarian nature of say windows OS, Android, iOS etc are others.
