Hi Everyone..
I have a Dell laptop running on Vista.
I put in the Win 7 cd.
When i clicked install I to the 2options
-upgrade
-custom
I selected upgrade so I could keep the files on pc untouched.
Then this popped up:
COMPATABILITY REPORT
The computer started using the Windows Installation Disc, Remove the instalation disc and restart your computer so
that windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation disc and restart the upgrade, (Do not select "Custom
(advanced)" to perform an upgrade. " Custom (advanced) installs a new copy of
How am I going to install win 7 and keep files?
Can i install the win7 when i am logged in?
Whats a compatability report?

You can install Win7 when you're logged into Vista. Simply start your machine up as usual, and pop in the disc after Vista has launched.
-
I saw that you said if going from 32 vista to 64 7, you would need a clean install, but I'm going from 64 vista to 64 7, can i also do a clean install? or does my "upgrade disc" only recognize my copy of vista and upgrade from there, baring me from a clean install?
-
In other words, no one knows for sure until release. -
Based on that, would it be out of the question to think that the upgrade disc also allows a "re-install" after being uninstalled for any number of reasons? cause if thats the case, albeit time consuming, i could install over top of vista, then uninstall/reinstall windows 7...
hmm, october 22nd cant come soon enough, and i also hope asus doesnt fudge the free upgrade process and actually gets the discs to me. -
Is the family pack an upgrade or a full version? OEM or Retail? I want to be able to transfer my license in case I buy a new machine.
-
If I am not mistaken, Family Pack is 3x Home Premium UPGRADE. You will/should be able to get in in Store shelf upon released.
Retail versions of Windows are transferable to a new system. I don't know if you will need a to call Microsoft for the first time on the new system, though. It SHOULD be like under Vista. -
I get Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade for only $20 at my university
-
I purchased Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade from Newegg for $50.00 and now Newegg is selling Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1PK DSP English Full - OEM for $99.00.
What is the difference in Full and Upgrade ?
I have Vista Home premium 32bit can I upgrade it to 64bit ?
Can I do a clean Install ?
Thanks -
Full version allows you to have no previous Windows onto/used by the system to use it.
Upgrade means: "Because you purchased legally your previous version of Windows, here is a special for you on the new release of Windows".
Rumors says it will be just like Vista upgrade, other rumors says that if your system has no windows installed as you formatted it, you can do a clean install but it will ask for the previous version of Windows disk/product key at some point, in the setup. Sooo, this is unknown for now. But some information is provided by Microsoft and discussed here. -
GoodByts thanks a lot.
-
Probably should add to the FAQ that the upgrade disks will be the same as the Full disks.
Just a difference in licenses. That seems to be a running issue around here.

-
hai guys
my laptop is eligible to free upgrade
in case that my hard drive is damaged & replaced with new one, do i still need to install vista then use the upgrade dvd to perform clean install? -
No.
Windows 7 UPGRADE allows you to do a Clean install.
Microsoft provided a method to by-pass the installation of a previous Windows for a new HDD, or a HDD that passed through format.
Here is the method (see Method #2):
http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/clean_install_upgrade_media.asp
As long as you have Windows 2000, or XP, or Vista. that was pre-installed on the system, and nit been transferred onto a new computer.. you are eligible to Windows 7 upgrade disk under Windows 7 License Agreement. -
wow thanks
but install old os 1st then install win7 still consider the "correct" way right?
just it is a bit waste time -
Both ways are considered correct. If Microsoft didn't want you to be able to do a clean install with an upgrade disk, they would simply do like Vista Upgrade and XP upgrade, where you did not have this registry key and command line to activate your copy of Win7.
If you have Vista configured with all your applications, and want to pass to Win7 with an upgrade, this will allow you to transfer all your files, installed programs and configuration (I don't know about system level configuration) to pass to Win7. This method will be faster.
If you want to do a clean install, just because, or you suspect your Vista to have issues (ie: was infected by a virus/malware and want to be sure that the infection doesn't pass to Win7, or whatever work done which damaged Vista doesn't pass to Win7), then doing a clean install (custom install as it's called), from Vista is fine (run setup in Vista) is the best solution. You will be to re-install all your applications and games after, also you need to backup your data before anything, and restring it after Win7 is installed.
If you change your HDD, or want to format it to any reason, then a clean install (custom install) from boot, then following Method 2 of the link I provided, is the best solution. You will be to re-install all your applications and games after, also you need to backup your data before anything, and restring it after Win7 is installed. -
thanks again for ur brief explanation

That is the date where Dell has the product in stock and ship it to you (left Dell warehouse to be given to you). You should have a tracking number that will pop-up soon, if not there already.

Hi I'm looking for information on student pricing/offers.
I'm in the UK so I can get Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional Upgrade for 30GBP. If I get the Professional Upgrade that means I have to have Windows Vista to install it right?
I'm currently using Windows XP and I want to do a clean install of W7 Pro 64-bit so would "Windows 7 Professional Upgrade" allow me to do that, or would I have to buy the full version of W7P at full retail?
OK wait in the T&C's when you check out:
Program Description: Eligible students are allowed to purchase one license of either:
1.Microsoft® Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade
OR
2.Microsoft® Windows 7 Professional Upgrade
Offer only applies to either of the above listed Microsoft product offerings.
Does that mean you can only get the upgrade versions for Vista and I would have to buy a full retail version as I am on XP? -
You can do a clean or upgrade install at you choice with the Windows 7 upgrade, just run the setup from the current Windows and you'll have no problem, as you show Windows 7 Setup that you do have a previous version of Windows.
To perform an upgrade you need to be using Vista, also:
- If you pass from Vista 32-bit to Win7 64-bit (or vise-versa) you need to perform a clean install.
- If you downgrade edition, you need to perform a clean install.
-
Great thank you for explaining that so clearly.

Hey guys,
A question on upgrading between Windows 7 versions.
I messed up by getting Home Premium preinstalled in a laptop I recently purchased as it can't connect to domains at work. And around where I live Windows 7 is impossible to find. Is there anyway to purchase the Upgrade from Home Premium to Professional online and download it? Don't live in a very developed country so getting it shipped is extremely difficult. Checked the Microsoft Store website and though upgrading to Win 7 lets you download the OS, for upgrading between Win 7 versions only the shipping options is available.
Appreciate any help. -
In the control panel, icon view mode - You have Windows Anytime Upgrade.
From my understanding it provides you a new product key and a downloadable disk image (ISO). But, I am not sure. -
Hmmm, looks like it's the perfect solution. Thanks!
-
Can anyone either describe the process, or point me a link where I can learn about how to use the Windows 7 UPGRADE (download, not disc) in order to install Win 7 on a Mac?
I'm about to download the student discounted edition for $39.99, but am not 100% convinced yet that I will be able to use it in boot camp to perform a clean install. I think boot camp will need a disc, which I don't have and won't have the time to order.
Also, any reason NOT to get the 64-bit version? FWIW, I'm opting for home premium over professional, even though they're the same price. Foolish move?
Thanks!!! -
-
Thanks for your response.
I AM eligible for the Windows 7 "upgrade" download. As a student, I can download the "upgrade" for $39.99, and the website SUGGESTS that I can do a "clean" install with what I've downloaded. However, I'm left wondering how I can achieve the clean install via boot camp. I think I need to get that "upgrade" version onto a DVD first.
Get where I'm coming from? -
The UPGRADE license idea, is: "Microsoft would like to thank you, for having previously purchased Windows or got a system with Windows pre-installed, by offering you a discount on the new Windows".
UPGRADE license is to pass from Windows 2000, XP or Vista to Windows 7 NOTHING ELSE. Students can get the UPGRADE license cheaper than non-student (So it's like a special onto another special).
Then again, you can do what you wish... you'll get it, install it, activation will fail, as it can't find a previous Windows, you'll be sad, and won't be able to sell your copy... 40$ out the window. If you want Windows, you should have gotten a PC instead, or purchase Windows 7 FULL license. -
Speaking of student discounts, I'd like to take advantage of upgrading to Ultimate from W7 Home Premium. I previously qualified for the free W7 upgrade from Vista which I've already performed. However, I always wanted the Ultimate from the start but wanted to see how well the free W7 HP performed before I decided.
Any suggestion on the most effective way to activate this upgrade? -
I know of no discounts for Ultimate edition. Unless you happen to know a Microsoft employee.....

i got a student license for free in my university, it came with a dvd of vista professional 32 bit as well.
now i want to upgrade my Sony VAIO Z650 vista business. will the dvd work if i want to just upgrade my OS or i have to do a clean install?
how about the drivers? will i have to install them again if i do the upgrade? -
Plz don't hijack. -
wearetheborg Notebook Virtuoso
Then REINSTALL and now the upgrade will work. -
Hello, I was just wondering if you can use the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade Version to upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium?
I am not talking about the WAU. But the Upgrade CD.
thanks. -
Sure. However, if pass from 32 to 64-bit, you will need to re-install windows.
During Win7 upgrade process you will be asked to enter Win 7 Pro product key, as long as Win7 Pro is installed on 1 computer only, there should be no problem. -

I have a question
I already own win7 student edition, since I'm a part time student, but my wifeys brother needs win7 for his new laptop and we were wondering that my friend from school can grab the licence in his name and just pass it to my wifeys brother ? We're in Canada nd he's in Poland, would this couse any trouble ? -
-
Ok, guess it's gonna be hit and miss then, hope he can keep it working...otherwise I'll be out $39 and I'll have to buy him home premium retail
-
I read stories of a very very small companies (ie: family business) distributing XP licenses illegally with computers, they got reported by some employee and got fine 80k just by Microsoft. The company had to close, unable to continue it's operating with such a dept. If your caught.. obviously, if Microsoft is nice, it would be cheaper, but probably a few thousand of dollars. Not worth it in my opinion. All you need is you and your wifey brother not going a long, one day.. and you'll get the surprise. -
I just found this site last night and figured I'd bite the bullet and see if it was legit or a scam. Apparently they buy keys from microsoft in bulk so they get discounts. I just bought win7 Ultimate key for 13.99. Check it out http://www.wholesalekey.net/windows-7-key-c-3.html
I bought it last night via paypal and checked my email this morning and it was there, well it was in the spam box so make sure you look there as well.
