I hope you know that you will not be able to integrate SP1 (slipstream). You'll have to buy a new DVD (or get hold of one). The tool that helps slipstreaming is also updated in the same time, therefore causing the process to fail.

Id do another clean install if i could only get my hands on a 64bit install disk with sp1 integrated.

Definately a very clean OS install.

People with affected hardware might not be able to see it even if its officially released.

I hear ya.... but they are a multi-national corporation. They should have some integrity and respect the global time - if they say the 18th, then deliver it to everyone on the 18th.

Is this release for all versions of Vista. I remember hearing sometime back that the Vista Ultimate SP1 would be released at a later date because of the language packs. Also is the 64-bit SP1 part of this release?

I got it through my MSDN subscription about a month ago. It took about 15 minutes to download the standalone installer. It took about 30 minutes to install. With two or three reboots as I remember.

Slipstream is the process of integrating service packs, drivers or updates into an OS installation disk to create a brand new installer disk which would install EVERYTHING all at once. Lets say for example you build a brand new desktop machine from scratch. And you buy a Vista installer DVD. Without a slipstreamed disk you would have to install Vista, then your drivers, then any updates and then SP1. If you create a slipstream DVD first, it would contain all of your drivers, the updates you slipstreamed and SP1. Then using that slipstreamed DVD, your OS install on your new machine would be a single step.

This really only makes sense to do in two cases. One is where you MUST include the drivers into the installer. (For example for XP installs on machines without a floppy drive and require SATA drivers, you have no choice except to slipstream the drivers into an installer.) The other case is where you plan to install a fully updated OS on several machines. Like in an office, school, store etc.

THEY never said the 18th. THEY said mid March. The pundits are the ones who forwarded the 18th date as being absolute. Microsoft has NEVER used global time for any releases. Their time base has always been US time. Why should they do anything diferently now?

Now is this version for Vista Ultimate? I thought there was something that was going to cause a delay of SP1 for Vista Ultimate users. Can anyone confirm this?

When I clicked "What you should know before installing SP1", it said:

"You can use SP1 to update all editions of Windows Vista:

    Windows Vista Starter
    Windows Vista Home Basic
    Windows Vista Home Premium
    Windows Vista Business
    Windows Vista Enterprise
    Windows Vista Ultimate"

For anyone getting this update... i would recommend installing through windows update as it only updates the files that are specifically needed meaning that the install is 65mb instead of 450... probably will be a much cleaner install as well...
