I think I read somewhere that the delay for Ultimate was that they wanted to release SP1 in all languages.

I think the update through windows update will not be up until April or something. I might be completely wrong, but thats what they conveyed when they annouced the release date. That doesn't make sense though at all.

What's the difference between getting the stand alone installer, and just waiting for Windows Update?

    Like, advantages/disadvantages?

You get it faster through stand alone, but its easier and takes up less space by waitinf for windows update.

To the best of my knowledge it is not compatible with Ultimate as the language packs aren't ready yet. Will take a few months for Ultimate guys to upgarde to SP1!

Tomorrow, tomorrow; its always tomorrow todayyyy(singing voice)!

*EDIT* This will work on Ultimate as long as you don't a bunch of language packs not supported by the 5 language standalone (Engish, German, French, Japanese and Spanish)

The one I downloaded via my MSDN subscription worked fine on my Vista Ultimate. There is nothing on the public download page that appeared this morning that indicates it will not work for Ultimate unless you need one of the language packs not included in this current release. There are five languages in today's release.

    Hi All,

I want to know what this below link is talking about SP1 standalone installer.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937286
I didn't understand clearly what they mean by does not contain SP1 help files. Does the SP1 help files are optional ?

    Regards

I think I will wait for the 65 MB download thru windows update. I don't want to fill my hard drive by d/ling the 436 MB standalone installer. I can save some time.

I want to wait also...especially since it says to download through windows update if you're updating only 1 computer. But, I know my lack of patience will get the better of me if it doesn't come out on windows update by tonight.

I think the 65MB download thru windows update should be much faster. Microsoft wake up!. Release the download to WU.

I would just wait for it to be availiable through windows update. it will be a (FASTER) install.... The standalone version includes all of the languages and everything... a bunch more crap that you dont need... not mention the fact that you will probably not notice anything spectacular with SP1 anyway (i had the beta version and couldnt see any differnce at all...) so its worth it to just wait for the windows update ;)

I read some of the release notes from the microsoft page... the standalone has support for all of the languages and all of the files for people who are not up to date with windows update. so if you dont want a bunch of extra crap just be patient and wait for the wu version... in my experience with the beta there is nothing to be excited about anyway... ;)

The install won't be any cleaner. The download will be smaller, that is the only difference. The standalone has all of the things needed for all Vista versions and languages. That does not mean it will install ALL of those things though. The one that will come via Windows Update, will be just for the specific Vista version and specific language that you have. Hence the smaller download. But the final result on your machine will be identical regardless of which way you get SP1.

I have to disagree with you on the benfits. I immediately saw differences. Most notable was file transfer times.

Clearly you do not understand how the installer functions. Yes the standalone has SUPPORT for all languages and updates. That does not mean it will install all of them. It will ONLY install the language files that match your current language. It will ONLY install the updates you do not already have installed. There is a difference in the size of the download. There is NO difference in the results after either of these two methods are used for applying SP1.

Help files are the PDF or Txt guide telling you what to do, it'll say

    click dowload
    wait
    click open
    click run
then let it do it's thing.

    It's essentially pointless.

What? Windows 7 comes out in 2010. And that's 2 years away. Plus, XP got an SP3 while Vista was out.

Supposedly it is the very same thing. But I have not seen any CRC check numbers on the two files yet, so that you could be 100% certain of that "fact". So at the moment there is no definitive answer to this. I had the last beta and then when the "release" was made to MSDN subscribers I uninstalled the beta and installed the official release. I did it while watching Letterman and Jon Stewart one evening, so I didn't really care if it was potentially wasted time or not. YMMV.

Yeah the installer is actually the better method. It also has some updates that will help improve capatibility and such because your windows may not be fully up to date and that may cause problems because some updates may be missing, which the installer ensures doesn't happen.

Question: After reformatting a PC, does one need to install the numerous vista updates in the windows automatic update prior to installing the standalone sp1 installer, or all the necessary updates present in the sp1 installer? Can we just do a reformat with the original Vista Ultimate dvd, and then immediately run the sp1 standalone installer without installing all available windows updates first?

I have a bet for a free lunch for you that says that rumor proves to be untrue. We can meet back here after Win7 or SP2 is released and see who owes who a lunch. Care to bet?? ...big ol' grin...

My understanding is the standalone installer has a rollup of ALL the updates, so a clean install followed by an SP1 would get you totally current.

    I'm at a major state University, yet I'm downloading SP1 at a mere 42 KB/s. :(

Either Microsoft is getting hit hard in the bandwidth, or something's wrong on my end.

Clearly, I never said that it would install all of them in the frist place.... i was just making the point that it is a much smaller file so why not wait for it to appear in wu. i think you misunderstood what i was trying to say! for me personally, why download a 435mb file when i can just wait for an hour for the wu version. i guess i was just a little surprised at how excited people are for this update which doesnt really do much other than provide a little better stability :D

do you even know what that reg "hack" did? it just added one line to the registry telling windows updates that you can get SP1 ahead of time.

i don't understand how can people be afraid of registry files, just open it in notepad and see what it adds.

    .....

It is an executable file that is the same on any computer that it is downloaded to. So you should be able to download the standalone .exe from the microsoft website, and use it on another vista machine.
