update minefield build 2007120505:
. still choked up after a few hours of usage, needed restart - total bummer!
. cold start is getting quicker, warm start is no issue
. page rendering is quick and smooth
. video streaming is clear (pic and sound)
. download manager is fast
. memory hovering between 45-120+ mb depending on tabs and video
. memory release is quick
. cpu usage peaked at 20% under heavy load (surging to 40%+ when opening new tab or windows, then settle down) and 0-8% at simple browsing
update opera 9.5 build 9681:
- no change, i think i will leave this alone until a more stable beta version comes to light, other than that ( http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/Opera_9.5_Beta_Other_Known_Issues ) is doing quite a good job with protocolling current issues
cheers ...
-
Firefox sounds so awesome! I can't wait for 3.0 to come out officially.
-
update minefiled build 2007120605:
- choked right after a few minutes, after a restart then no more issue (?????) - what did they do?
- everything else is smooth, quick
- i have re.install minefield new with a few personal about:config tweak that i made in FF2, some addons activated via Nightly Tester Tools
- yahoo mail empty folder script still ongoing broken (or not?), oh well
update Opera 9.5 beta build 9681:
- an interesting remark from the desktop team blog that Opera is going the road of Firefox? extracted quote from http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/
under Linux build ...
"The problem was solved by spoofing the plugin  We now say that we are Firefox - we have brought this to Adobe's attention and are looking forward to future versions of the FlashPlayer. This spoofing can be turned off by setting the OPERA_PLUGINWRAPPER_NO_SPOOF environment variable"
interesting after all, need to do some more research in this
cheers ... -
update Opera 9.5b Build 9681:
- issue = why it was slower than the first 9.5 beta 1
- digging about, under tools/preferences/advanced/networks, showed that MaxConnectionsPerServer is defaulted at 8 (vs 20 in Beta1) and MaxTotalConnections defaulted at 16 (vs 20 in Beta1)
- these values are being deemed "cheating", as stated in my earlier post in this thread. Real web/net developers would be uneasy to set these values higher than 4 and 2 (firefox FastFox extension is a perfect nasty culprit)
well, i did a small test:
- turning Opera 9.5 build 9681 both Maxblablabla values down to 4 and 10
- Minefield is being currently set at 4 and 10 with pipelining to true all this time
- restart
- Opera 9.5beta Build 9681 crawled at page opening/rendering, and I meant crawling - while Minefield zipped along
any one interesting in making the same test in Opera 9.24 and Firefox 2.0.0.11?
cheers ... -
How come WMP (windows media player) is not working for me, in Minefield? If you can help me, i'll maybe change to FF3 for good
I can't get it to work in Opera 9.5 either, but I've gotten used to that... right now I want FF to be able to stream WMP
Also, is this the latest version of Minefield?
Also ver.2How ALPHA is FF3 really ? it's not even beta right ? So it's not really secure to browse with minefield
EDIT: Just found out, it is in beta stage, doh! But how important are the daily updates (trunks) ? Can I install over an existing version of FF3, or do I have to do a clean install every time, actually ever day if I download trunks? -
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=206213
i m a multibrowser user with preference to FF, but i would not say down Opera, or Safari or IE - each one has its own strength
i like playing with the updates, so i can see what they break and what they add. Part of playing with the beta testing.
cheers ... -
Thanks for the answers
I just "played" with it today.. Some pages are rendered inaccurate, appearance problems.. Made me give up on Minefield for now. Plus, some extentions were not yet updated for Minefield (FootieFox)
What about security holes in Minefield? Lots of them ?
In Opera I have an option to export my bookmarks, and then reload them again in any version of Opera. How can I do this in FF ? Say, export my bookmarks from FF2 to Minefield ? EDIT: Nevermind I found out how do do it -
dont forget that one of Opera 9.5 boasting features is "Improved site compatibility"
U can however override the compatibilty issue with Nightly Tester Tools extension as mentioned in many previous posts, should u want to use them.
Reading ur posts and replying to them before, i believe that u r just trying to trip up other browser users (regardless of IE, Safari ...) in order to justify ur beliefs that Opera is superior in security handling or in any other areas. I have a term for this, mentioning in many of my posts ("Blind cheerleading").
FF2 latest release is being deemed most secured at the moment, with many potential security leaks or attacks been documented within the FF community with recommended steps to prevent them.
FF3 has imposed the big change in extensions/addons in order to make it transparent to users.
I strongly recommend that u read the change log within Opera development - from current 9.24 to potential 9.5 - and get urself familiar with all the current security issues that Opera is trying to cover with 9.5 at the moment and how far it still has to go!
In Minefield i also have the option to automatically import everthing from IE and Opera over - NO need for backing up!
cheers ... -
update Minefield build 2007120705:
- here is a bit of 3 steps forward and 2 steps back situation with this build
- cpu usage is more accute than yesterday (?) but
- memory usage is down noticeably (??)
- still bombed out after few hours surfing, no warning, no cpu raise, no memory raise - just bombed!
update Opera 9.5 build 9681:
- wow, this is the first Friday (already Saturday in Oslo) that the team has missed submitting a new build
- on the plus side, when performing a speed test using Celtic Kane Online's javascript speed test ( http://celtickane.com/webdesign/jsspeed.php ), this build is 3xtimes faster than Minefield
- no change in the issues from ( http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/Opera_9.5_Beta_Other_Known_Issues )
cheers ... -
It tests javascript, if it was 3x times faster in everything, I bet more people would be in the Opera Camp
And NO; I'm no blind cheerleader! I've just been using Opera for a long time, and just started using Minefield a few days ago -
update Minefield build 2007120805:
- seemed that the bombed-out was gone, no error message for almost 2 hrs now, usually within the first 15min of usage
- just play with a personal stressed test
... yahoo new video streaming on exgternal window
... cnn news video streaming on one tab
... youtube video on one tab
... browsing latimes, yahoo mail opened in 2 more tabs
... over one hrs period: memory never hit pass 140mb, cpu maxed out at 54% once in a while, video/audio quality clear and smooth, page rendering smooth
... i did tweak some networks connections values in about:config using lazslo tweak guide. Prior to the tweaks, video crapped out when opening 2nd windows
update Opera 9.5 build ????
- no new of a newer build since last Friday
cheers ... -
-
update Minefield build 2007120805 (2):
- regarding the memory usage, this is to clarify that no tweak has been applied to about:config (browser.cache.memory.capacity)
- the default value of -1 is being used, meaning Minefield is managing memory usage on its own, depending on performance needs and system resources
- i m also running Minefield - in parallel with FF2.0.0.11 - on my old faithful hpN5430 (512mb ram, 1100mhZ AMD) and am currently hooked on this. No stress on the poor comp, comparing to the FF2
- confirming that the bombed situation was fixed, no shutdown error since the nightly build update earlier today
cheers ... -
I can't browse FTP sites with Minefield ???
-
this url gave a good short tip as how to FTP browsing:
http://www.timeatlas.com/mos/5_Minute_Tips/General/Connecting_to_FTP_Sites_with_a_Web_Browser/
cheers ... -
update Minefield build 2007121005:
- development team must be busy the last few days, averaging 2 build updates per day (??)
- noticeable drop of cpu - too quiet to the point of being eery!
- a few sites shows page jumping (jittering) at first page rendering, did not happen before today's builds
cheers ... -
Update on Avant Browser: smokin' on an Airport Extreme at 300 Mbps, IE is gone forever
-
300Mbps
-
btw, Avant is pretty great if you want to forever bury IE....most downloaded browser at download.com for a reason....waiting on final Opera too...any news on that?
-
To be very honest, I didn't understand a word in your post.
All I got to understand was 300Mbps (in your earlier post), and I thought that's your surfing speed, but clearly it is not.
And as for Opera, the final build has still some time to go. -
-
cheers ... -
Avant substitutes IE in windows update...actually I went into file associations and sorted by programs on the right, and everywhere it said IE, I changed the program to Avant. At least do that for .url as setting default browser won't do that. I was doing this for firefox using IEtabs too. I've used the Mozilla Gorilla for years and just wanted something new
Since Avant is basically a user friendly 'security shell' for the Trident engine, everytime IE gets an engine update, it of course updates Avant...but the reverse isn't true of course.
EDIT: I've tell heared [sic] there does exist some programs out there that are hard coded to launch iexplorer.exe....but I don't think I have any on this machine I hopeahh, no sooner than I speak....Spy Sweeper launches IE to take you to their website for a product update when you check your program version....I'm going to talk to Webroot about removing this 'feature' from an otherwise fine product
-
-
That said, Friggin' camcorder is 30 gigs everytime it's offloaded, which is regular -
cheers ... -
I didn't update from the MS site. It wouldn't work half the time, not to mention I had to use IE, and I had to use it again when I had to re-install. I used Autopatcher, too bad MS got it banned. But they have a personnal looking into the whole matter.

Ooh nice. Firefox 3.0's download resume actually works.
Can pause a download, close your browser, and then resume it later. I knew FF3.0 supported in on paper, but just tested it and it actually works in real life too -
update Minefield build 2007121105:
- wow, the best pages-rendering build ever updated!
- most sites (well, the ones that I visited anyway) presented clear/SHARP, quick AND smooth
- minus point for CNN - sometimes must refresh once at start, but then everything is clear
- quiet and constant at 60-80mb, multi tabs and video streaming
- video news streaming kinda choked after the the first minutes (???) - quality is top prima
- youtube streaming is fine (but then CNN and yahoo are always a problem for me and minefield)
- url visited history: latest visited site will be moved up at the top (automatically rearranging)
cheers ... -
*Cleans up drool* Waiting for 3.0 to come out sure is tough.
-
qhn, this is one of the best threads I've ever read on NBR. Thanks.
I downloaded the beta and at times it's a little jiggy but it seems to be working fine. If it picks up the add-ons I use and incorporates an autofill, I'll be happy.
Any idea if the spell chick works?
PS. Yeah it does. Ah, no it doesn't! -
Wierd!!! Sometimes my short cuts open to FF 3.0 sometimes to 2.0.0.11.
-
It seems that if you already have Firefox (any version) open, then any new windows you open will be of the same version.
So if you already have 3.0 open, and try to open 2.0, you get another 3.0 window... -
ur statement:
it does=good, it doesn't = what happened?
cheers ... -
update Minefield build 2007121108:
- video streaming (cnn, yahoo) = fixed!
- cpu and memory still constantly super the last few days builds/updates: keep it going ff team (reaffirming that it is eery quiet)
- now if "my"issue with yahoo mail (confirmation dialog html issue) at folder level deletion instead of message level deletion, would be fixed then I m a happy camper!
- extension/addon gurus: please get going .....
cheers ... -
-
Just updated the build. It's gone from 3.0b2pre to 3.0b3pre
yay
-
- if u want to play with addon, u must RE.install Nightly Tester Tools direct from the developer site, reactivating within this build update will not work
- it is actually build 2007121205
- as you have seen, the update screen has being expanded to clarify much more what it is about to happen with this update
- it is getting close
cheers ... -
I used Google tool bar for both of these features, but would prefer to have the space without it.
I still don't understand why sometimes, I'll get FF 2.0.0.11 or 3.0. It's random and FF 2 isn't in my add/remove. Not big deal, I can work with either since it imported my bookmarks. -

One glitch I noticed with FF3 is trying to play the ABC player to watch Lost (or any other program) it says I need to download the Move Network player which I do, get prompted to restart, but it still won't play. Works fine with FF2 -
Too bad I couldn't run both side by side.... -

update Opera 9.5 build 9681 - pls do take this report with a light heart:
- wow, in search of more info regarding the status and inputs bla bla bla, i tumbled into the Opera war zone, reading comments at
- http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2007/11/30/unix-plugin-milestone?startidx=400
- man, Opera developers sure are a ****y bunch (even if they were right in some cases)
- bottom line, personal observation as always, was that:
....> people having issues (regardless where/why/what) with other browsers, use Opera
....> people having issues with non.official Opera (alpha, beta ..), use Opera
....> what version of Opera to use? heck u r on ur own to try out "any" stable version that works for u, just do not complain back!
ouch!
cheers ... -
I'll tell you why I've switched to FF3 Minefield. Because of the build in password manager. Yes Opera has Wand, which I loved. But the main difference is, Opera only remembers your passwords and let you log in with just one click. But FF3 Minefield is logging in while rendering the page, therefore no need to click on something, you're already logged in. What a great feature
-
http://my.opera.com/euricomatos/blog/show.dml/283873
even though i m not a fan of storing browsing info, many of my mates swear by the security and flexibility of this FF "wand" extension/addon/(built.in in FF3)
it will be interesting to see when Opera 9.5 coming to life, i m sure that it will be great and exciting
cheers ... -
update Minefield build 2007121305:
- please, pretty please
... "my" yahoo mail
... extensions/themes/addons
cheers ... -
Build 2007121405 is using much more memory than before :S
Anyone else experiencing this? -
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9b1) Gecko/2007110904 Firefox/3.0b1
Is Minefield something different entirely? I can't keep up. -
Wow, you're way behind
The newest is 3.0b3pre
