me thinks it starts midnight, but with people on the west coast 3 hours behind us easterners in the states I think it will actually begin at 3 AM (EST).

I think they will email you a download link to the ISO, which you can then burn onto a DVD and proceed with the install. It would be cool if they email you a download link to get started ASAP, and mail you an actual disc later on once they manufactured it.

Judging from how fast the Windows 7 Beta download limit cap went... yes it will go incredibly fast. However...

Microsoft did not mention what the cap was on getting this promotional pricing for the Windows 7 upgrade, other than that it ends on July 11th. Based on this knowledge, I'd say that you are safe as long as you do it within the first 24 hours :D.

MS did mention the cap as "July 11 or while supplies last".

    dangit....

I may wake up early tomorrow and ask my parents before they go to work.

hopefully they last the first 24 hours...

but "till july 11th" is a long time. hopefully they have a lot....or they are just saying while supplies last so more ppl will buy it.

Turns out the ability to pre-order kicked in precisely at midnight. I just placed an order via Amazon (one of the 3 participating stores in this promotion; other two are Office Depot and Microsoft's own store).

I just found out that if you place it through the Microsoft store, you'll have an option to download it (on October 22nd I believe) in addition to getting a DVD-copy. However, at the time of this posting Microsoft's store is down for maintenance mysteriously...

I'm excited, but the "happy-factor" is quickly subsiding because I have to wait until October 22nd to get the DVD to install the upgrade. Oh well, I'll live. Vista is rocking anyway for me. I'll miss it dearly. :p

Why is W7 Ultimate upgrade twice as expensive as W7 Pro upgrade? Nuts!

Edit: Nevermind, Amazon is having a sale on Pro and Home edition upgrades.

Which version are you guys choosing? $49 is a steal for Home Premium but I'm sorta considering Professional. That Location Aware Printing sounds very useful to me since I use my laptop in different places but everything else in Professional I'm not to sure about.

Can anyone weigh in on what they see as the advantages of Pro vs HP?

^^^^^I've seen that before. Charts don't mean squat if they're not fully explained or at least provide a little detail about how and when a feature might be used by a user.

That's why I asked the question. But w/e I give up.

Forgive me if I'm completely missing something. I'm in the market for a new laptop and I had been waiting at least until today because of the Windows 7 upgrade. I was under the impression that newegg, best buy, dell, sony, etc were going to be giving free upgrades (when it comes out in October) to Windows 7 starting today when you bought a new computer.

Either I'm not seeing on their sites or I'm just misunderstanding...is this not the case anymore?

ETA: Scratch that...I'm now seeing it on Sony and Dell, but not Newegg and Best Buy.

You will be able to buy a Windows 7 installation disk at "upgrade" price, providing proof of the XP license.

A clean install must be performed since there is no upgrade path from XP to Windows 7
