So a quick background: I am now using my FOURTH Dell Latitude E6400 in 11 months. I have had verheating issues with every one of their replacements (nVidia card didnt seem to play nice with dual external monitors through the docking station).
My first and second computers alos had major issues with the CPU spiking every time I did something that was graphics intensive.

Dell FINALLY agreed to send me one with an intel chipset instead of the nVidia card. I just started using it and every time I do something graphics intensive, the CPU spikes again. It can be a youtube video or something as similar as uing my task bar and it will affect the cpu usage greatly (will jump from 20-70+ percent).

    Any ideas?

I am on 32 bit Win 7; where can I find the latest drivers for the intel chipset?

Also, the process that seems to be eating all my cpu is Firefox...

hey, same thing here. I don't do games though. it can only handly a few videos at a time. sometimes firefox goes crazy and eats 500mb or ram, just out of nowhere without opening additional tabs.
I am still not sure what the cause is but 90% of the times I can work with it no problems.
maybe it's win 7? I have 7 as well. maybe it's firefox? what are you using to measure cpu consumption?

    Just the task manager.

Whats weird is that I just had the exact same setup on another e6400 with an nVidia card and had zero problems (with CPU spiking).
Therefore, I do not think it is Firefox.
I think it might be the lack of an updated driver for the intel chipset for Win 7. (I hope).

What processes are causing the CPU spike?

Are the increases in CPU usage prolonged or just spikes? If it's just spikes, I think it's probably normal...

During non-video use: spikes-but they last long enough to freeze other programs, disallow the usage of the keyboard, etc.
    While watching video-prolonged.

Nothing but problems with this Laptop for over a year now...

Which Version of Firefox you are using?
When you using an other Browser (IE, Opera) does the system has the same behavior?

    regards
