When I unpacked my E4200 yesterday I noticed that the external DVD is eSATA based with integrated power which I suspect comes from USB.

Wouldn't it be really cool if Dell made an external 2.5" HDD with the eSATA interface for fast speeds and power coming from USB for portability. For compatibility with other PCs you should also be able to use standard USB cables. What do you guys think?

I've got several external 2.5" HDDs which have eSATA and run on USB power. However, these use two sockets, one for eSATA and one USB for power.

Are you saying that Dell have used a special plug which can use the USB/eSATA combo port for both data and power?

Oh I didn't know those existed, but yeah that's what I want - everything in one cable. Would be awesome, especially for the E4200 which only has two USB ports.

Yes, the e4200 has a special combo-port . Had to look though, as I thought it was eSATA only, but it has a USB-mark next to it as well.

Till 5 minutes ago, I thought the e4200 only had 1 USB port... :)

Is that the same port as the bottom port on the bottom computer in this photo (my E6400)?

Yeah, that's the guy. It can be used as eSATA with a normal eSATA cable, USB with a regular USB cable, or eSATA with USB power with a special Dell cable.

I'd second this idea (and actually sent it to my rep the same day I placed my order a month ago). The 64GB Ultra-Performance SSD is great and all, but it is a little small and there are occasions where I'd give up a little portability for some extra storage space.

It shouldn't be long before someone sells a cable with the combo plug at one end and separate eSATA and power plugs at the other end for use with external HDDs.

John, what speeds do you get from your eSATA disks that use USB for power?

The same as if it were installed internally. See here and here.

    Nice.

I have a feeling that Dell won't listen to us. I guess we'll have to wait until eSATA gets built in power in 2009...
