Hi!Can you please advise me as to which hdd is best to upgrade the slow 4200rpm 1.8-inch drive that my laptop came with? I'm interested in the best value price/performance:). Please if you could give the full name/type of the drive/s so I can google it!
    Thank you!

Buy an SSD. Intel X-18M comes to mind. I think they're still pretty hard to find and still only come in 80GB and 160GB flavors... but for now it's still the fastest widely available SSD.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, the D430 IS still using some silly ZIF thing, and the X-18M will not work. You're probably looking at an RBX Samsung or an Mtron drive.

Here is probably what is the best range of 1.8" HDDs in the UK and here are the 1.8" SSDs.

First find out what connector your existing HDD has (Device Manager will reveal the model number then Google for more details). If going the SSD route then Intel is the fastest but has a price premium. There are also some slow and power-hungry older SSDs which need to be avoided.

Yeah, but these are all micro-sata devices, and the D430 doesn't support micro-sata.

You can get one of these Mtron drives...

    Or a Samsung drive...

(there's a bunch of Kingspec junk spammed in there; you don't want any of those)

I'd personally go for one of the Samsungs. They're a tad bit slower than the Mtrons, but a better value on capacity, and I think they also consume a bit less power.

There's also Indilinx-based Runcore zif drives, but I've heard there's compatibility issues here and there, so I wouldn't totally trust them yet. I think there's a good chance these will work though...

The D430 uses the same PATA ZIF connector that the D420 used. The options really are not that good, but any SSD is better than no SSD at all.

I own a D430 and from suggestions on this forum it lead me to these runcore drives. Probably not the best SSD out there but for the price and the speed it is real good. I also did pair this with windows 7 which I heard was supposed to work real well with these drives. I will not say its the fastest thing out there, but it is much better to use than the original drive and my 32 gig drive was pretty cheap.

Piker can you please link the SSD drive you got?

Also what is the difference between ZIF and PATA are they the same? I need a new drivefor d430 and the drive type is PATA..... I am hoping for at least a 80gig drive, and want to avoid a 4200rpm (prefer SSD or 5,400RPM)

If you can link any suggestions that'd be great! Also I am from U.S.A so an US retailers would be good :)
