    I still can't point to a culprit.

However, do I understand that you are using Sleep, and not Hibernation? If so, try using hibernation overnight. It's much more difficult to wake a hibernating computer.

No, this time the device wakes itself automatically a few hours AFTER a shut down state.

    NO USER INTERACTION WHATSOEVER:
The notebook will 'sleep' itself after being awake for 20/30 minutes (like the settings under default power management). While seemingly the sleep mode works, coming back from the sleep function results in a crash (same effect as if you press the power button for 10 seconds). Then again the notebook tries to reboot, going into the windows boot menu. Since there is no user interaction, the notebook will start windows normally (normal action after 20 seconds without choosing beween safe mode/safe mode with network). And so the circle continues

    WITH USER INTERACTION:
When using the notebook normally, trying to use the sleep function doesn't work either. Notebook goes to sleep, but when you 'manually (press the power button)' try to wake the notebook, the notebook shuts down (!) and reboots, going to the windows boot menu again saying 'windows did not shut down properly'.

Call Dell to replace their defective computer.

I agree that it's time to pass the problem to Dell. You've exhausted the options on troubleshooting (except for installing Linux instead of Windows) and there seems to be something abnormal. However, mainboard replacement might be easier to demand than replacement of the whole computer and might be enough.

    John

PS: Did you check for any BIOS updates and install if available. A BIOS update seems to have fixed the problem here.

I've had two motherboard replacements now. Problem still occurs. Dell will not replace the notebook since they are convinced that the problem lies with the NVIDIA NVS 4200. I have to wait until they release a new driver, hoping this will fix the sleep problem.
I'm wondering if anyone here with the same configuration (NVS 4200, Intel Quad Core, 8 GB ram, Windows 7 Business) also has these sleep problems with the E6520 (not mentioning the spontaneous reboots)

We couldn't get a new laptop from Dell the ordinary way. They told us that the problem was due to the graphics card lack of decent drivers. I had to wait for a new driver to come out.
While this wasn't a very customer friendly solution we had to push Dell to replace the laptop after numerous replacements (mainboard, heat sink, ...). At first, they wouldn't. But after a few talks, they agreed to replace the laptop as a sign of 'goodwill'.
While not really acknowledging the problem, the replacement laptop works without ANY problem.
