I agree. I'm not sure why there isn't more interest in the Z. There seems to be practically no one wanting one. OK, integrated graphics and a low-power 1.6Ghz CPU...big deal. For most non-gaming types, this is PLENTY of power, plus, add a 256GB SSD and all the bells and whistles, and this is a fancy cool notebook. The LCD is bright and clear, and honestly, it's pretty darn fast!

Like you, I was searching the Outlet and an odd-ball unit popped up--FULLY LOADED, with practically every option, including DUAL 256GB SSD's!! Snapped it up for $1164. That's 512GB of high speed storage in this for next to nothing!

Sadly the outlet store for Australia is almost completely empty of everything all the time.

After looking at Dell's included Samsung SSD I think it would be possible to install any Manufacturers SSD in the Latitiude Z just by removing the SSD internal assembly from its outer case.Just a thought if you are craving a new sandforce equipped drive or Intel;)

It came out of the box that way 2 weeks ago. Any time I switch to battery, the DWM service chokes.

I haven't figured out the source of the issue, and am too lazy (so far) to rebuild the machine.

The DWM process you are referring to is the Desktop Window Manager, which is a component needed to handle Aero Glass.

I don't have Latitude Z. However I'm sure the Latitude Z also tries to downgrade the graphics from Aero Glass to Aero Basic when switched to battery power, just like my M6500.

Maybe try disabling this behavior by opening up the Advanced settings of your Power options, looking for "Dell Enhanced Settings" and set "Aero Glass" to be "Enabled" on battery.

The way this works behind the scenes is that Dell Control Point System Manager uses a running application that registers itself as incompatible with Aero Glass, which automatically drops the UI down to Aero Basic when switched.

FYI, there is a 20% coupon floating around on the outlet business models. I am debating whether I should pick up the Z just because it does look really cool. Though at the same time I could pick up a Dell latitude 13 as well brand new for like $480 something. Frankly, I've been really wanting to get a Sony Vaio X, but that starts at $1,200. So I dunno. The reviews I have been reading about the Z are mixed at best...any way to convince me?

So would this thing be overkill for taking to university everyday? I was thinking it might be useful for split-screen notetaking and due to the low weight, feasible for taking back and forth each day, but is it just excessive? I think I'm deciding between a refurb latitude e4300 (or 13 when they hit outlet) and this.

Do owners here actually use the features like the buttons on the side?
