Now all you got to do is swap in the x220's IPS display and we have a winnar..

Is the optical drive option internal to the E6220 or is it an externally connected option?

Also, other than the size (12.5 vs. 13.3) how does this laptop differ from the E6320?

    Thanks,
    Harvey

The E6320 has an internal optical drive. The E6220 does not.

So how does this compare to the X220? If it doesn't have an internal optical drive, I really don't see a point in getting this over the X220 when the X220 offers IPS.

+1. The X220 also offers mSATA and weighs less. Next best bet would be a 13" Toshiba R830 which weighs the same as a X220 but sports a optical drive as well. 12.5" HP 2560P has an optical drive but weighs a hefty 1.92kgs. See comparison below where $=no internal optical disk drive:

    Code:
    13" Toshiba R830	3.10lbs (1.40kgs). 1" thick.
    12.5" Lenovo X220$	3.20lbs (1.45kgs). 1.36" thick. IPS LCD option.
    12.5" Dell E6220$	3.50lbs (1.59kgs). 0.97" thick.
    13" Sony SA 3.71lbs (1.69kgs). 0.95" thick. HD6630M/900P option.
    12.1" HP 2760P tablet$	3.97lbs (1.80kgs). 1.27" thick. AFFS 1280x800 LCD option.
    14" Lenovo T420s	4.03lbs (1.83kgs). 1.05" thick. NVS4200M/900P option. mSATA.
    14" Toshiba R840	4.20lbs (1.91kgs). 1.00" thick. HD6450M/900P opt. HD6450M opt is not switchable gfx.
    12.5" HP 2560P 4.24lbs (1.92kgs). 1.29" thick. Too heavy for a 12.5".
    13" Dell E6320 4.29lbs (1.95kgs). 1.2" thick.
    14" HP DM4x 4.50lbs (2.04kgs). 1.27" thick. HD6470M option

What a joke these things are. I've been playing with a Latitude e4200, which is waaaaaay smaller than this thing. Sure the e6220 isn't a bad looking computer, but its certainly not in the same class as its predecessor, the e4200, it had better horizontal resolution and was smaller....in every dimension.

Seriously, when did large laptops become 'hip'?

Hopefully it will not have the throttling issues the X220 has.

Having recently purchased an E6320, I decided to price out a comparable E6220. Rather amazingly, the E6220 was around $600US more than my E6320. Comparable pertinent specs (the "expensive" ones) were:

    i7
    256GB SSD
    8GB Ram
    win 7 pro

I guess I feel a lot better about my E6320 since it came with the internal optical drive and is $600 cheaper while only being slightly larger that the E6220.

    13" Dell E6320 4.29lbs (1.95kgs). 1.2" thick.
    $=No optical disk drive

Remove the E6320's optical drive and it weighs only 210grams more than the E6220. I too would go the slighly heavier and larger E6320 and pocket the $600.
