I just do a fresh install windows XP. Everything has been installed properly (no exclamation mark) in device driver. However, 1 thing that hasn't worked is the SD card reader. I inserted SD Card and nothing shows up. I open My Computer, the only available is my hard disk (C:) and cd-rom (D:).

I opened device manager: IDE/ATA/ATAPI controllers:
    Ricoh SD/MMC host controller.

It's there!, can somebody tell me what I am missing?

My Device Manager shows an SD Host Controller (a separate entry) as well as the SD / MMC controller under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

Check that the Dell ControlPoint hasn't turned the power off to the SD card reader- it's one of the power saving options.

John, I still have no luck on the SD card reader.

    I just checked that:
    1. In dell control point, the media reader is NOT turned off
    2. In windows device manager; yes, there are two separate entry for SD reader, which are:
**IDE/ATA/ATAPI controllers: Ricoh SD/MMC host controller.
    **SD host controller
Both have been installed properly and no conflict.

I give up at this point and SD reader seems dont work...

I am using Windows XP Professional (fresh install). Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I have been working hours and hours in front of the NB, but still no luck.

By the way, if you open My Computer, did you see a separate drive (e.g. X:) for the SD reader?

    Please helps...

I get another drive when I put an SD card in the slot.

BTW, I see another thread about Memory Stick. Are you trying SD or MS?

My SD reader works Ok, and I usually leave a card in the slot, I have noticed one problem though, about once in 10 suspends gets blocked until I remove the SD card,

Occasionaly I get the message "The device drive for SD card is preventing the machine from entering standby"

I can't see an updated driver on microsoft.com anywhere.

    Anyone else?

I have several related devices working properly in Device Manager:

    IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers/Ricoh SD/MMC Host Controller (PCI bus 3, device 1, function 2)

SD host adapters/SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller (PCI bus 3, device 1, function 1)

I would be sure to try different cards in case one is bad.

SD worked fine for me after a re-install of xp. I would suggest that you try another SD card, just to see if the card that you are trying is bad or not.

anyone ever solve this? the sd card reader on my bro's new e6400 just doesn''t work. it recognizes it (not disabled in bios -- and we've uninstalled dcp just to be sure). it thinks it needs to be formatted (note, my e6500 reads the same cards just fine)

If the card works OK in another computer then there's no need to think about reformatting.

In Device Manager can you see (i) SDA compliant host controller under Secure Digital Host Controllers; and (ii) a Ricoh SD/MMC host controller under IDE ATA/ATAPI devices?

Also, Dell ControlPoint may disable the reader when running on battery in order to save power.

    Also see this thread.
