If you were planning on finding that WD-40 about then it's best to leave it alone, as GK sussed out I wasn't serious on that part! ;) But the call up for the replacement part is serious though since keyboards are quite sensitive parts. You may do more harm than good trying to do some DIY to it. If you're unsure then it's best to call up on this since the keyboard still technically works but not in the particular manner you expect from the Latitude line.

I've just installed and activated on my E6410 the standard OEM Win7-64 using the key on my E6410. However, I did have to go through the telephone activation.

In Canada they don't (at least for the E6410 which I just checked). The various configurations have turned to the worse lately with some not even offering the choice of OS or several other components. I'm glad I got mine when I did, prices have gone way up and options have gone down.

I couldn't resist the opportunity to potentially FUBAR my brand-spanking new computer, so I grabbed for the silicone, and...
blessed silence. Or rather, normal sound. Now it makes a much more solid - and low-key - thwumpy sound, perfectly normal.
I pried off the spacebar verrrrrrrry carefully. Then I spritzed a drop of silicone on a q-tip, and very gently dabbed it on the underside of the spacebar and on the keyboard panel on the spot where it squeaked. Pressed the spacebar back in place, and now it's quiet. I don't know if it was the silicone or maybe the spacebar just wasn't seated properly, but whatever I did, it worked.
Hearst555, you hit the nail on the head. I was loathe to send in a brand-new system that is otherwise in pristine shape.
GKDesigns, I ‘ll look around for that silicone, it sounds like a good thing to have in the house. All I had was a “pure silicone” (definitely not food-grade) from the hardware store, but I was extremely cautious and used the most infinitesimal amount.
Thank you both, for your encouragement. My homeroom teacher in sophomore year would have called you instigators, LOL, for putting reckless ideas in my head. :)

It may be late for this, but after I got my machine with the 32-bit Windows 7 it struck me that I'd made a mistake. I called Dell customer service and they sent me a 64-bit disk by overnight mail at no charge.

Yes, it comes in handy for lubricating plastics/synthetics, or things otherwise hard to lubricate cleanly.

No yet, but because of similar problems in the past, I avoid sleep and go straight to hibernation.

Graphics drivers used to the one of the sources of wake-from-sleep problems. Check you have the latest driver and also check the optional Windows updates.
