So many people I saw, installed Ubuntu because they were told by someone who doesn't end up helping them, about how great it is. And they expect that no mater the system they will get this above and beyond experience, with the crappy myth's "It never fragments, invisible so no security precautions ever needed", and the rest. Anyway,

I found this, which is really cool, but sadly it's 32-bit Windows only:
andLinux.org -- Run Linux natively inside Windows
    Run Linux ON Windows.

Same experience for me, it worked from the beginning. It was actually very smooth, I just moved the disk I was using on my old Thinkpad T61 into the disk bay of the E6410. Ubuntu 10.04 booted and functioned right from the beginning. My only problem was with the display drivers, and that has been solved now.

At the beginning suspend was suspending the machine correctly, but the drivers were not waking up. Then it stopped suspending. Now the display is working but suspend is not.

I switched to Ubuntu more than a year ago and had 3 thinkpads along the way. With Ubuntu and VirtualBox for running the needed windows apps it is so easy to move from one hardware to the next. At least that was my experience with Lenovo.

It seems that Dell is not very Linux friendly. I wanted to update the Bios today and discovered that they only support updates from Windows. It's time for them to wake up and see that not everyone is running Windows.

I have to agree with the fact that Linux is not for everyone, but if you understand enough to be able to run a few commands from time to time Linux is a very good option and has lots of advantages. For example my old T61 felt slow and sluggish with Windows XP and pleasantly fast with Ubuntu.

I'll try that next time I boot up. Thanks.

    Sorry I wasn't clear.

The Intel X25M G1 80GB and OCZ Vertex 30GB did perform fine with Win7Pro64 however that was on a XPS M1330 laptop and XPS 420 desktop respectively.

Like I mentioned earlier, the new Vertex 2 that is giving me problems was tested on the XPS 420 desktop and worked just fine with Deep Freeze. So I determined it is something about the E6410 that is giving it problems.

I will further test today by doing a clean installation Win7Pro64 on a Vertex 120GB (not Sandforce) on the E6410 today and trying to Deep Freeze it.

I just tried another Deep Freeze alternative, Shadow Defender.

    Nope, same problem.

There are a few other similar programs that I will test out.

I just received my E6410 this week. This morning I put it in my backpack without a sleeve. And now there seems to be some marks on the exterior of my case ...not scratches but some marks that are dull-looking, which sorta looks like the polish/paint rubbed off from being in contact with my books. I've been searching relentlessly for remedies, because, after all, my 2-day old laptop now looks like a 2-year old laptop :(

Any ideas on how to repair these marks?

Ah crap that really sucks :(
There is no fix.. these are scratches. You don't see them as a real scratch as a thick layer of paint is applied.

All laptops are like this... you really need to put them in a nice ultra soft sleeve and keep the inside very clean.
Well at least you don't have a glossy one... NOW it's going to look like it would 5 years old, in 2 day's.
Lenovo's laptop (well not all the them, the black traditional ones) are the ones with minimum care, as they use a thick, string, very textured, and the plastic itself is color black.. so scratches are barely visible, but they look ugly, and it does actually get scratch as well, just a bit harder. Another good 'low maintenance' is silver colored (and in metal) covers, like some select Sony laptop and silver MacBook Pro's.

The real fix is stop shoving your E6410 in a backpack. Buy a notebook case.

Does anyone know where to get the 3G data card for this laptop cheaper than Dell? I'm open to eBay if need be. I'm not sure what Dell quotes in terms of $AU, but $US seems very expensive for something so commodity these days.....
