They are the same. No one else makes the Dell keyboard. I got an E4300 backlit keyboard from Hong Kong which works fine.

    Questions:
    (1) Does it stay cool enough to be sitting on your lap for a couple of hours of not-too-intensive use (browsing, lazy coding)?

    (2) Should I expect to get a full Win7 Pro install DVD that would work on any compatible machine (as opposed to some Dell-only restore DVD)?

    (3) If the answer to (2) is yes, how horrible an idea is it to use that same Win7 install DVD for another box? I don't quite understand what Microsoft's WGA program does and doesn't do.

    Much thanks!

    1) The E6410 pulls air into bottom vents, so not wise to block them. I find most notebooks too warm for my lap... I'd plan on using a surface. Yours will definitely be too warm for the lap, imo.

    2) It will be a Dell OEM DVD with fixed product key. If it is activated on one system, you should not activate it on another. Not sure if it will refuse to install on another system.

    3) The license is pretty simple... one per system.

    This applies to all laptops:
    - If you are a guy, and you wants kids later on in your life, don't put your laptop on your lap. It's for reason why they are outside your body.

    No and no.
You will get a specially made Windows disk from Microsoft, which is pre-activated, but will only work on Dell systems only.

The license that you will get is for 1 computer at the time. If you want multiple licenses, then get Microsoft Windows 7 Family Pack, which offer 3 licenses of Home Premium for 150$ total (so 50$ each). You can get this from Microsoft online store and your local computer retail store.

The disk will NOT be an image. It ONLY contains Windows 7. You will get another disk containing drivers and software that came with your laptop. From which you can use to install any driver and software that you want.
Additional software such as PowerDVD or Roxio, will be provided as separate disk (like if you purchased them from the store).

This is something I like a lot about Dell, while many other manufacture give you images of your computer with all the junk, you have here the real Windows disk (the one that you paid for in the price of the system), and keep the rest separate.

    - Expect for Windows 7 Family Pack and Volume License (Enterprise edition), it's 1 Windows per computer. And it checks!

    - OEM license, says that the product key get tied to the motherboard of the system. If you change your motherboard with a different model or make, then activation will fail. The license agreement state so, so you have to purchase a new copy of Windows 7. (However, Microsoft, right now, as we speak, is very nice, if your motherboard died, and you can't find the same anymore, you can call Microsoft Activation center on the phone number provided in the "Activate by phone" option that you will get once activation will fail, explain your situation nicely, and they will give you an override code.

    - Retail and Upgrade license (the one that you buy in the store, with the box and everything), provides you with Windows license, that you can move from system to system, no problem. As long as that license is installed on 1 computer, Microsoft is happy.

    SUCCESS!
I just did a clean install of Win7Pro64 on the Vertex 120GB and it worked! Deep Freeze works and my settings are intact after reboots and restarts frozen and unfrozen.

So there is something about the Vertex 2/E6410/Deep Freeze that is not compatible from my findings.

    So to backtrack...

1.) Installed Win7Pro64 on Vertex 2 60GB SSD in E6410, installed Deep Freeze, settings of various programs would get changed randomly.
2.) Installed Win7Pro64 on 160GB HDD in E6410, installed Deep Freeze, everything works perfectly normal.
3.) Installed Win7Pro64 on Vertex 2 60GB SSD in XPS 420 desktop, installed Deep Freeze, everything works perfectly normal.
4.) Installed Win7Pro64 on Vertex 120GB SSD in E6410, installed Deep Freeze, everything works perfectly normal.

Deep Freeze is a technology that I don't really undertsand how it works it's underground level, but essentially what it does, is that any changes that you do on your computer, including getting files on the web, continuing a project, installing a software, deleting System32 directory, will not affect anything when you reboot (like if you did not do anything). Imagine if you put your computer as Read-Only. That is basically what Deep-Freeze does.

I had a somewhat worrying moment last evening when I hibernated by E6410 and it froze with a few white lines started flashing across the screen (and nothing else happened).

The computer restarted OK and has hibernated OK since. However, I would like to know what happened and wait to see if it happens again.

It could have been a simple driver bug, I would not worry about it if it's only happens once. If it happens more often and you have the latest drivers (or went with an older driver if you have the latest one, without any help), then it could be the GPU failing. I'll be really surprised that it's the monitor. If it happens all the time, maybe doing Fn+D to turn off the screen might check for that
