If Dell.com doesn't allow you to spec an SSD, you can add your own probably cheaper.

See the top topic in this forum regarding adding a second drive in the ODD bay.

...for you , is a good portable pc for cad/ little editing photos ?

i've now an m4500 but i don't use it at all the performance...

i want one which is better about weight and battery life...

i think the display of mine and the 1440x900 of the e6410 are similar...

in little cad works , you think is vbery different this with gma 4500 or NVS3100 and mine with fx880 ?

I finally pulled the trigger on a E6410 i7 640 and i just started trying it out. One thing that struck me immediately was that the 7200 rpm HDD vibrates more than I expected. I can clearly feel the vibrations in my wrists when typing, which is not very nice. Is this common with the 7200 rpm HDD in E6410? It's the 500 GB if that is likely to make any difference.

These vibrations also create an audible noise when the laptop is placed on a table or a wooden surface. Lifting it of the surface removes the vibrational noise and leaves the laptop with the whooshing sound of the platers spinning, which I actually kind of like... it sounds fast. ;)

Can't speak for your drive, but I suggest that you should not hear or feel the drive... maybe some light ticking or spin-up sound but not vibrations. Vibrations are mechanically not good, so their presence would concern me.

I would quantify what you are experiencing and explain it to Dell support in understandable terms. They may agree to replace the drive. You might also want to ID the drive and see if Google yields any similar issues... in case you want to alter its spec.

Thanks for your input. I am actually a bit concerned about the vibrations from a mechanical standpoint. I am really hoping this is not a common problem for the E6410, but I figured it should have been mentioned already if it was. I'll check the ID and consult with Google and Dell support.

I don't know, I didn't check. The laptop has been mostly idling while I investigated the vibrations and typed my question here. I haven't done any stress testing or anything above Win 7 performance measurement. The fans started during the performance measurement but the vibrations (on a wooden surface) was clearly audible over the low fan noise.

    1. Dell use HDDs from several manufacturers and some are quieter than others. What is your HDD model? Check in Device Manager. Seagate used to be one of the less good models.
    2. Is the vibration continuous or intermittent (such as associated with head movements)?

    1. I'm at work now so I'll have to check later.
    2. The vibrations are continuous, as if there is some slight imbalance in the rotating parts in the drive.

the i7 620m or the 640m are too hot for this notebook ?

the difference in battery between i5 560m\580m and i7 620m\640m is high ?
