Yes it shipped with 1 GB DDR3 and 160 GB HDD. I set it up to ensure functionality and then upgraded to 8 GB DDR3 and 500 GB MomentusXT. I ran a couple passes of Memtest also ran PC check on the hard drive, passed all tests.

Meh given all the stuff that has happened I am just going to return it to Dell. Don't want to be stuck with a lemon later on.

It sounds like a software problem, not a lemon. If the OEM HDD runs fine, then I would suspect your installation.

Just do an exchange. They will send you another one that is equal or better than that one. I remember i sent back my 15r and the exchange they sent had a slightly better processor and bluetooth added.

Not sure if you can exchange outlet notebooks. Mine was the very very base @ 509 dollars and there was a 15% off Outlet coupon applied.

By installation I mean your installation, not source discs. From what you've posted, it sounds like you did not reimage the system per Dell's guidelines, including a BIOS update and the latest device drivers at least up through networking. If the OEM drive image is stable, the system is most likely just fine... except for that screw that got stripped. :)

There is only one driver package, and it's the same for all mobile chips. I don't understand why I keep seeing references to using different drivers when there is only one package.

Last I heard, the nVidia driver on Dell.com is tweaked by Dell to output audio on the DisplayPort. That would make two driver packages.

Well, I started to reload the OS cause I wanted 64 bit instead of 32 and I had quite a number of issues.

From the start something wasn't right, it wouldn't even boot to the HD without me changing the BIOS to uefi mode, but I figured ok, maybe its a new feature/option. However then I heard the HD clicking and things started to freeze randomly. Then windows BSODs and I boot up and ran diag, and the HD was not found...

    Oh well...this sucks :(
