Suddenly one of the keys (the "2") key on my keyboard feels "soft". There's no snap to it anymore. No "detent" when typed. It still types, you just have to press harder.
I'm a novice at laptop maintenance, but it could be just a crumb or something under that key. Does each keycap come off individually? So I can clean underneath it?

Yes, that order is good for what's listed but what about everything else?

Also, if you want to be clever, you can install the Intel SATA driver during the OS install by selecting the option to load a driver and pointing to said driver on a usb drive. Saves installing and updating the default MS SATA driver... keeps it off your system.

Intel did produce a low voltage range of processors, but they aren't used in the E-series as far as I know. I would guess these run at lower temperatures than the regular processors. The E-series ticked a lot of boxes that I thought I would like including what appeared to be reasonable linux compatibility, but admittedly it is a big jump up in both processing power and size from what I am currently running.

Re. the Intel SATA driver, I might just to that.

Re. the rest I will be following your re-image sequence, however the following steps raised some questions:

09 Dell DCP Security Drivers (prerequisite for 16 below)
    16 Intel vPro or AMT
    17 Dell Control Vault
    18 Dell DCP Managers

My E6410 does have VPRO, fingerprint reader etc.......but I do not need the added security, nor will I be using the fingerprint reader.

Is it safe to conclude that I can skip these drivers without any consequences?

I did it during this first test install and ended up with three 'warnings' in the device manager:
    Other devices:
    Broadcom USH w/swipe sensor
    PCI Serial Port
    Unknown devices

I can't conclude that without trying it, so I would try it... skip what you do not intend to use, specifically the security bits. You may be able to disable some bits in the BIOS. Or you can try right-click disabling banged devices in Device Manager... I did this for the Broadcom USH.

That PCI serial port may end of getting installed for something.

Okay so turns out the reason why my laptop kept on choking up was the new Microsoft Security Essentials is bugged or something. As soon as I install it and reboot my computer doesn't boot. System restore keeps failing.

Also my E6410 captive screw for the bottom plate doesn't screw in. I believe where it screws in is stripped, and I only removed it once to put in a new HDD and RAM. Anyway to get this resolved without returning the unit?

You have something wrong with your system... MSE works perfectly for everyone.

If you have On site service warranty, it's Dell that comes to you to fix your laptop at your place, starting the nest business day at the time you want.

Don't have onsite only mail in support. I have only had it for ~24 hours, you think I should RMA it to Dell or return it?

I did a fresh reinstall of Windows 7 Professional?

    Did *you* strip it? :D

Is it stripped? Inspect it closely. Perhaps there is some way to secure the bottom plate and wait for something more serious to come along. Otherwise, call Dell.

If your reimage is crashing a known good app on a new system, I'd suspect your reimage and then the system, in that order. First step would be to reimage again and get a stable system. Then layer stuff on one thing at a time.

It feels like a software issue. If you have the Dell Diagnostics CD, run that and you'll feel stability. Or maybe the new hardware you installed is defective... test the RAM and check the HDD. Did you format the HDD?

No the screw isn't stripped. Where the screw goes into is? It depress the screw driver and turn right and it doesn't stay down. Only 1 captive screw to hold down the bottom plate = fail. Still deciding on what I want to do..

Well it's a Dell Windows 7 Professional x64 disc. Used 2 different discs, both known good. I install all drivers but the Broadcom USH. Meh I'll just use Avira, not a big deal.
