I haven't noticed the blinking light on my computer, but maybe I haven't been looking. Check the battery by (i) using the charge status lights on the battery and (ii) comparing the designed capacity and fully charged capacity using HWiNFO32 (the difference is the battery "wear" - it is common for this to be a few % on a new battery but should be offset by the designed capacity being more than claimed in the specs).

Thanks for the tips/suggestions so far. I will try them and get back to here. Btw, are the fan of your laptops running most of the time, just like mine? I just opened an IE window and let it stay for an hour (so far), fan is on (in two speeds I guess) almost all the time (over 90%). Not only my thinkpad T61, but new Vostro V130 don't have the fan kicking this often even with the full use of multiple programs.

My fan runs most of the time, but my E6410 is usually docked and closed, which means that natural heat dissipation is reduced. However, the fan noise is not intrusive except on the fastest (out of 4?) speeds. HWiNFO32 shows the fan speed.

Does a bay battery exist for this laptop?

Performed some benchmarking on my E6410 with the same config.
CPU Burn In (4 instances, 1 for each logical core, 10 minutes):
    Idle temp: 56°C
    Max temp: 89°C

    Sandra's GPU benchmark:
    Idle GPU temp: 58°C
    Max GPU temp: 77°C

Will keep you updated if this issue pops up again.

No, both units were closed and docked, but the vents weren't blocked.

^I do know that the laptop runs a bit cooler when docked if the lid is open, however, it should not be over heating...at all.

I've read about people removing the heatsink then cleaning up and reapplying new thermal paste....I wonder if that would help?

For comparison, I ran the wPrime 32M benchmark with 4 threads on my E6410 + i5 540M. Once the CPU temperature got above 80C the fan speed increased from ~3300rpm to ~4300rpm (noticeably noisier) and the temperature dropped slightly. (FWIW, HWiNFO32 reported a peak CPU power consumption of 31W although I don't have a high degree of confidence in that number). I have the Intel graphics so I can't do a meaningful GPU heat test.

Sadly not. There is no battery connector in the bay so it won't take a third party battery either.

I'd really like to know if there is a post somewhere with definitive before/after results of applying thermal paste to cpu/gpu....(I know the gpu has that weird pad thing...
