I have a Dell E6500 that I bought about a year ago with vista profession installed. I did a clean install of win 7 last year and upgraded the dell drivers. I am currently having issues charging the computer when turned on. If there is a lot of hard drive activity when pluged into the charger it goes back and forth from charging. If I turn off the computer it charges with no problem. Thoughts on the cause?

What is the power rating of the PSU (it's either 65W or 90W) and do you have Intel or Nvidia graphics? It is possible that the high HDD activity also means high CPU activity in which case there will be less spare power for charging.

How are you monitoring the charging? I use the battery info page of RMClock although there are other utilities (eg HWiNFO). One of these will enable you to see by how much the charging power changes according to CPU load.
