E6500 WUXGA screen corners dark, being replaced

    I received a Latitude E6500 with a WUXGA screen with the dreaded screen brightness problems. This is the same problem discussed here:

    The bottom corners on mine are very dark. I had been expecting a little, and had been planning on dealing with it like I have with some laptops in the past, but it's kind of outrageous how discolored they are. Screen brightness evenness is very poor as well, with the bottom part of the screen significantly brighter.

    My purchase order lists my screen as:
    Module,Liquid Crystal Display 15WU+,2CCFL,Samsung Maybach/Avia

    How are people getting the exact model number and part number for their displays?

    At any rate, it's the bad Samsung kind of screen. A lot of threads including the one I linked to state that there is also an LG/Philips screen that is much better for the same Dell WUXGA screen component.

    Has anyone managed to get Dell to change a Samsung screen for an LG/Philips? If so, how did you do so?

    My chat rep tells me that they can only replace using whatever was in the order initially.

    I got the replacement Samsung screen, and it's just as bad as my original. I think the only reason they can even sell these things in their condition is that the taskbar normally covers the unlit part of the screen, making it less noticeable.

    Has anyone ever successfully gotten a Samsung screen changed for the LG Philips?

    It's pretty hard to capture a realistic depiction of the phenomena. Here's an attempt at it. In real life, at a first glance, it's a little hard to read the word 7100 in the corner.

    I'm guess I'm glad I got the LG screen on mine or it would have went right back to Dell. A screen that bad is totally unacceptable for this caliber of machine.

    I managed to convince them to replace my panel with an LG. They told me that they couldn't guarantee what I would receive, but they would make the request to the service department to send me one, and that's what I got.

    The screen brightness is much more even, HOWEVER the corner darkness remains. I would say that the LG has moderately better corner dimness than the Samsung, but it's not wonderful. I'm pretty disappointed that I got the vaunted LG panel and still have this problem. I'm considering just giving up at this point and dealing with it, the taskbar covers that area most of the time anyway.

    The LG has a distinctly different color temperature than the Samsung. Much more yellow. I'm not sure I like it, but the colors do seem somewhat better as well.

    Oh just an FYI to anyone else replacing a screen on an E6500, to replace the screen, you don't have to remove the whole display assembly like Dell suggests in the service manual. As long as you don't mind working on the display assembly while the base is attached to it still, you can just pop off the bezel, and access everything inside the display assembly.

    The bezel is a bit tricky to get off, the graphics in the service manual are a little confusing, but the words are accurate. Start with the sides, and peel them from the inside edge in an outward direction. Once both sides are off, you can remove the bottom by going from the outside edge in an inward direction.

    I had the same issue with the Samsung screen. Dark corners and uneven lightning. Although, when using the operating system, it was the best looking screen out there in brightness, sharpness and contrast. If you could get past the dark corners, that is.
    I requested another Samsung, however I was told that they cannot guarantee it. I unfortunately received an LG and it very even in lightning, less dark corners, but the brightness, sharpness and contrast is less than on the Samsung screen. Now I am thinking that I should have stayed with the Samsung. :(

    i dont know about dell, but i had a similar problem on my t400 after the screen was replaced due to a different defect. The dark spots ended up being due to improper installation and overtightened screws (the t400 screen has 2 screws right there in the corners). Perhaps some of the recurrent issues are due to that?

    Try taking it out and plugging it in without mounting it to see if problem is still there.

    I'll bet your problem lies elsewhere. I can't imagine panels from two different manufacturers are having the same issue. Was the backlight replaced also? I'm not sure if it's integrated or not.
