This is the first time that I've used the new E6510 on battery power for an extended time. I noticed that the cooling fan does not activate unless it is plugged into a power source.

I have tried several power plans with no luck. This baby is getting H-O-T !

Go under Advanced Power settings, check the System Cooling Policy under Processor. Make sure that on battery the cooling system is set to active not passive.

It was set on passive. I'll report back shortly.

    Thank you kindly.

The fan now runs, but it still gets very hot before it turns on. ie: pretty uncomfortable to have in your lap.

The SpeedFan program does not recognize the fans and will not allow me any control over them.

The CPU hangs around 80deg F but the GPU is hanging around 117-135deg F.

Is there a way to modify the fan settings in the BIOS? I took a quick look but did not see anything, maybe I overlooked it?

On a positive note I'm extremely impressed with the battery life; I am getting over 3hrs with the standard 6-cell battery.

    i7-640m
    Nvidia graphics
    Full HD screen
    320g 7200rpm drive
    bluetooth
    WiMax
    etc....

    Many thanks again. :D

The temperatures you stated are normal.
    Download HwMonitor by CPUID.
    Take a screenshot of that.
