Or is the chipset driver embedded in the "install first" system software package?

I just now realized I think I may be asking the WRONG questions here. I'm looking to update the item that says "Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller". I'm concerned about this specific item because I'm using an SSD HDD and want to make sure that TRIM is working as it should and also that it is performing at the best speeds possible.

Look for the latest Intel Rapid Storage driver (under SATA drives) or from the Intel website.

Re-Checking the download link today does list an Intel chipset software utility posted today, 1/5/2011. I'm pretty sure this download was missing yesterday when I answered the question. So, yes, John, the Intel chipset download to be installed first after the OS install is on Dell.com now, and presumably is not included in the Win7 OS installation.

    Sorry for the misinformation.

I don't have an M4400, but based on my E64x0 experience, your BIOS is set for AHCI mode and you have installed the default Win7 SATA driver and you have not updated it to the Intel SATA driver. And you have probably not installed the Intel IRST application.

I recommend you download and install the Intel SATA driver only package from Dell.com or from Intel.com for your SATA device. This package does not include the Intel IRST app and does not auto install... you must extract the driver and update via Device Manager. This package is often referred to as the pre-OS install package.

Once you have the Intel SATA driver installed, the SATA device in Device Manager will list the proper Intel device names... not "Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller".

Thanks, I actually did that yesterday and it seems to be good now.
