    hey guys,
My latitude d620 will not charge, the battery is fine the charger is fine but whenver i plug it in the gren led turns off in the charger (short circuit protection??) The charger and batter both work on my friends d620.

Is there a general fault that causes this? is it the power jack? if not its getting thrown off a bridge on my way to work. i have basic knowledge of electronics so please help me.
    Thanks in advance

Yep, the motherboard is shorting the charger. This generally indicates some sort of failure within the built-in power circuitry... a fairly common problem (though overall less so with Latitudes) and generally not something fixable without replacing the motherboard.

Not sure if this is the case with your laptop, but there is a setting in the BIOS that disables battery charging. You may want to check if it's enabled.

YOUR JOKING , Could it be Anything simple? fuse or the jack? the laptop works well with a charged battery.
IS There anyway to make a battery charger using the power supply? join the pins of the charger to the battery?
I Just installed windows 7 SPEWING!

Did you check the setting in the BIOS? Reboot the computer and keep hitting F2 before the W7 logo appears.

It's possible for it to be something simple like a bad DC jack... but in those cases you usually don't short the AC adapter. In those cases you generally tend to just not get power, or get the silly "AC adapter not recognized" message. You can definitely try to replace the jack and see if it solves the problem. It could, but I wouldn't bet on it.

There are no fuses on a D620 motherboard, so that's out of the question.

You CAN buy external battery chargers for Dell batteries; there are plenty floating around on eBay, but I've never used one, so I don't know how well they work.

first thing i would do is try the laptop with a known good power adaptor, borrow one from a colleague or friend.

second would be to test the battery, in case its a fault with the battery. If those two dont work, its the charging circuitry on the motherboard and you'll need to replace the motherboard.
