I bought a D620 a while back and added complete care since I travel a lot. About a month ago the computer was involved in an accident and was completely destroyed.

Today I got the word that my D620 most probably would be replaced by the E5400.

My D620 was equipped with the Nvidia Quadro-card (integrated gfx on the E5400), had a magnesium casing (plastic all over on the E5400) and weighed about 2,3 kg (E5400 starts as 2,5).

Should I complain or do you think the E5400 is "equal or better" than my D620?

Not even close. Not that the 6400 is anything to write home about, but at least it has a discrete card. I would most definitely say something.

It should be replaced by an equal or better computer.
You should complain about the lack of discrete graphics card. That by itself should be able to have it replaced for E6400

A few questions- approximately when did you purchase the D620 and was it new or from Dell Outlet? If from the Outlet, do you mind if I ask how much you paid?

I bought it new mid 2007 with 3 years of NBD-service and 3 years Complete Care.

Whine and see if they can get you a D630. The E-series is still a bit of a work in progress...
