    Hi

I have a dell Latitude d830, and a Toshiba external (usb) HDD.
I installed Linux (Ubuntu 10.10) on the HDD. I then went into the BIOS and set up the boot order to be:

    1. CD/DVD
    2. external USB
    3. Internal HDD

However, the computer never boots up from the USB, it always goes and boots Windows from the HDD. CD boot works fine.

I then removed the Internal HDD as a boot option, and when I did that, the computer just gave me a "boot disk error" or something.

Anything I'm doing wrong here? Or is the d830 (menu options notwithstanding) not capable of booting from a USB drive?

    thanks

I thought I did, the ubuntu install (supposedly) took care of everything including setting up boot tables and all that

Well, it's not an issue with the Dell - I made other bootable USB's and they booted up fine. So, maybe it is an issue with the HDD after all. I'll post this on ubuntuforums and see what they have to say about it

    thanks.
