if you use throttlestop to keep the CPU at minimum speed you can browse the internet and watch video without the fan ever turning on

the 1600x900 screen doesn't have the best viewing angles, but it's bright enough to see outside on a sunny day. there seems to be a larger amount of black space between each pixel, but i've noticed that on a lot of newer laptops. i have really good vision though

edit: and as said before, the battery life is awesome

I've bought the E5420 as well, no need for the dedicated graphics in the E6420 and I like the looks of the E5420 better. Build quality is excellent, it definately is made to bring along. The keyboard is fantastic, best I've seen on any laptop. Audio is above average, though not as good as the XPS 15, but I guess that's hard to beat.

I too picked the 1600x900 screen. Imo it's a very nice screen, viewing angles are above average, and for a laptop quite good really. Yes, it's not an IPS or PVA panel, so don't expect the kind of quality you get from high-end monitors or tablets, but there are very few laptops sporting that sort of screen and they come at a price too. The sharpness is great, and the desktop realestate it creates is also very nice. It's only a few bucks more, a must imo.

I paired it with a Momentus XT hybrid drive. I know a lot of people have had issues with it, but here it seems to be working fine for the moment. It boots up like an SSD and had 500GB of HDD space, so you get SSD speed and HDD capacity without having to remove the DVDRW drive to fit an HDD bay.

Batterylife with the 6 cell is also good, half a day at least though I haven't exactly clocked it.

There's only two small downsides: the edge on the palmrest is quite sharp, so it's not very comfortable to use on a table, the rim then cuts into my wrists. That doesn't happen when it's on my lap, so in most cases I'm fine.
Secondly, the touchpad (or it's driver) is a bit buggy: although in general it is very nice and the gestures / multi-touch features are wonderful, it sometimes won't let me move the mouse cursor across to where I want it to go, as if there's an invidible wall blocking it. Contacted Dell support, and we're still working on that.

All in all it's a wonderful machine, and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a beautiful notebook that is very sturdy and portable, fast and reliable, and has all the bells and whistles you need (except for gaming that is).

Err, doesn't feel sharp on my E6420. Unless you mean that it's tall/high enough that it's leaving a mark on your wrists?

I get that sometimes. It gets stuck wanting to go only one way and you have to Fn-F5 it off, then Fn-F5 it back on to clear it.

I wouldn't really count on the Quadro NVS 4200 for heavy gaming. I can get it to play ME1 "okay" and it'll get you in the door, but eGPU or ViDock is probably the way you need to go if you want to play more recent games.

That you don't have a sharp edge on the E6420 could be because it's a different casing altogether. The E5420 is actually my wife's, I'm using an XPS15 which is amazing, and has very smooth edges.

I'm happy to hear you also have the stuck cursor thing, it is a really strange bug. My idea is that it is a driver bug, so it can hopefully be fixed.
