The screw screws *through* the spring into a threaded hole in the metal chassis. Remove the spring and you should still be able to screw into the metal chassis, unless those threads are stripped.

The spring is bent out of shape. I'd like to seriously injure whichever person designed this screw/spring contraption.

If those threads are stripped after 1 day then that would be pretty crappy.

I put the screw directly into the socket (without the cover) and it holds it so the threads don't seem to be stripped. Although it won't hold when i have the cover on.

Perhaps the spring must be in place and compressed by the screw to become a washer/spacer against the plate, holding it firmly to the bottom.

Hi everyone I just bought a e6400 last month. I have a couple of questions if any one can help me or give me your opinion,

    1. How does the e6400 run on Vista vs XP? On Vista does it run hotter, louder, slower, etc.? What is your preference?

Is it possible to upgrade the Nvidia Quadro 160 drivers to use the geforce drivers?

    Thanks

I talked with Dell chat. Now I have to send it in after only having it for a day. They tried to say there might be charges if there's anything upgraded (fortunately I haven't upgraded anything yet). Nothing that might have been upgraded though would have changed the fact the screw isn't doing it's job. It's not like i upgraded the screw lol

Task Manager says my Dell ControlPoint has a peak memory usage of about 36MB.:D Google Earth is up at 480MB.

A bit of packing around the battery should fix any wobble.

I've had no problems with this arrangement.

I think the spring isn't sitting properly and is blocking the screw from going in far enough to properly grip in the hole.

The purpose of the screw it to stop the base from sliding forwards. There are several fixing lugs that hold the base on.

    It works for me!
I can't remember if it was installed by W7 or if I had to do it manually.

I installed Ubuntu on my external HDD through the eSATA port. I installed it through Wubi and it works perfectly! It quickly recognised the Nvidia GPU and proposed the driver V. 177.xx and that too works correctly. Everything works correctly. The only thing that hasn't worked yet is the bluetooth adapter. I've not yet tested the SD card reader and the smart card reader. Does anyone know how to make them work?
Installation was a breeze and everything was taken care of by Wubi or Ubuntu itself. I didn't even have to partition the hard disk. This isn't my first time on Ubuntu, but it's a nice experience after Windows which makes you do all the work!

Windows allocates memory according to the amount of memory installed.
    Numbers from my 4GB E6400:
W7 boots with ~940MB used, it boots in ~23sec (without DCP but with AV installed)
Vista boots with ~1.2-1.3GB used, it boots in ~34sec (with DCP installed)

Installed in a VM with 1GB allocated to W7 it shows ~450MB as used after booting.

With 4GB memory costing only $45 I would say it is a required update anyway as available memory is used for caching. (read better performance and increased battery time)
