I've never tried disabling the virtual memory. I always set a fixed size swap file which will leave Windows plenty of space.

A program is likely to stop when Windows runs out of memory. It won't slow down as it approaches the limit.

What temps do you get on your Nvidia GPU using HW Monitor? Mine is between 50 and 60C when I am just browsing, with the room at about 20C. This is on battery, with RMCLK running. In the lowest power state, RMCLK does not make any difference, though.

Even when the CPU fan is not on (as reported by Everest), there is another fan running that I can hear. Is there a separate GPU fan that is not read by Everest?

2GB of RAM is not enough for today applications needs. 4GB or more is needed before you venture in the world of disabled page file.
In my case, I gain 15-20min of battery life, and my CPU is behaving the same as before... it could be just you, or something else wrong.
Vista memory management is immensely improved over Win 2000/XP joke. Your system should not show any visible 'slowing down' even if you are 95-99% full. I did not personally tried it, but as you can see it does it's job correctly.
Technically speaking, RAM, unlike HDD space level, should NOT slow down your system if it's full. This is another reason, among speed, and close to the CPU, why RAM is better than HDD/SSD no mater how fast they are.

In XP, you need 3GB of RAM if you want to disable page file if you don't game. Vista you need 3.5GB if you don't game... 4GB if you try to game but risky (these are my personal recommendations... of course, it all depends on what you run). These number changes. A few years back, 512MB with XP was enough to disable page file if you don't game. But as applications gets more fancy, less optimize, and has more feature and fancier UI's... it needs more. I won't be surprised if you need 6 or 8GB in 2 years from today.

Are you sure that it is not the HDD? The E6400 cooling system has only one fan (remove the computer's base panel and see for yourself).

HAahahahahaha! you made my day! :D I like you now.
On battery, with Aero and transparency, Power saver mode, my video card is 52C right now. Fan no running. This is normal. When I game it goes 60-75C. Stressing the GPU it can go up to 90C. On my desktop my Geforce 260 GTX goes from 60-90C despite it's huge heatsink (if you want some sort of comparison)

On to what made me laugh:
Your laptop, has a second fan... it's invisible. It turns every time your laptop makes toasts, bacon, and eggs for you. ok ok, enougth kidding arround.
Your laptop has only 1 fan (don't believe me or Dell service manual, then open it up!). What you hear is the HDD spinning, it's the disk that whips the air when it turns and the vibrations of the motor. The HDD for laptops does a similar sound as a fan. Faster HDD's makes more noise and vibration, and uses more power... that is the trade-off for increase performance.

Yes, I think you're right. The HD is a 7200 rpm and it does whine like another fan. I guess on the other E6400 that I have the 5400 rpm drive is much quieter.

    I'm glad you're happy. We're here to help :).

Sounds like your temps are about the same as mine then.

im trying to decide which ram to get so if u can help.
ok well i decided to just get 4 gigs since most 4 gigs have free shipping and it doesnt cost that much more, but im deciding on two different brands and if u can help me out.
option 1 - 45 dollars from new egg + fs is
    Crucial 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Laptop Memory
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148159

or should i get this from buy.com which is 35 after rebate plus fs
    OCZ 4GB ( 2 x 2GB ) 800MHZ DDR2 SODIMM Laptop Memory
    http://www.buy.com/prod/ocz-4gb-2-x...chnology-4gb/q/loc/101/206152493.html#cRevSec

like which one should be better and have more quality, and is the crucial worth the 10 dollars more?

I never see a discount, or special coupon, etc. for this laptop in the searches I've done on most of the "deal" sites.

Does this laptop ever go on sale? If so, how much would I plan to pay and where should I be looking?
