ive been having this problem with the intel wireless 5300 card. Sometimes when I start my computer the network connects but only as "local" and not to "internet". I have to "repair" the connection and choose get a new IP address. After I do this, it gets fixed but it happens a lot and not just on one network, it happens at school and home.

Kind of annoying, when I start my laptop and want wireless, I have to do this whole repair thing just to use the internet.

I am using the windows utility and I have the latest intel driver (but not the intel software)

Power consumption aside, the difference in light-load battery life between the two machines is about an hour. I could get around four to five hours on my Nvidia-based machine and about five to six hours on my Intel-based machine. The overall power draw figures, 10W and 8W respectively, seem to be about right as well.

I am assuming that you are talking about a 6-cell battery. For the 9 cell, that difference is closer to 1.5 hours.

My son had this exact problem. I told him to turn off all the power management and keep performance at maximum, for AC as well as for battery operation. He said that the drop-outs have now been less frequent. You need to go into the driver properties and the power option properties to do that.

Intel addressed this issue with a new driver release, but it did not fix my son's wifi problem, so there may be different causes.

The Intel power may be for the whole chipset since it is an integrated GPU.

Previous discussions suggest 6 hours with Intel GPU and 5 hours with nvidia GPU using a 6 cell battery.

The kensington PSU I have uses about 4W when nothing is connected. The best test is to run of battery and look at the battery drain power using RMClock or similar.

I was getting around 8W about a week ago, with P8600 and Intel GPU + brightness 1 step about minimum using a standard power profile but no internet or wireless connection.

I have two Kensington universal ac adaptors. The older one is very cool, and that's the one I have been using. The newer one, the one with a really short power cord, is very warm when I plug it in. My guess is that you have the newer one. On mine (the older one), the kill-a-watt meter reads either 0 or 1W when it is plugged into the wall but with no load.

this seems like a hassle though, sometimes I need the battery so putting it into high performance all the time does not make sense.

Once I repair it, its fine...never drops or anything. It is just on start up that this happens. I updated the driver and software

You may want to try turning off the power management of the wifi for a few days and see if your problem goes away. If it does, then you start to turn things back on and see at which setting the problem shows up again.
