I've just noticed that the pointstick on my E6400 has left a circular mark on the display. Apparently the pointstick touches the display when I carry the laptop in my bag (when the lid is down without applying pressure on it there is plently of room between keyboard and display). I have put three bumpers (about 1 mm thick) on the top of the display bezel as suggested in this thread. any advice? would it be advisable to use thicker bumpers, or would I be better off using some sort of laptop skin/cloth?

Remove the rubber on the pointstick and put it back properly. It can't be higher than the keyboard keys. If it's already not the case, then something is wrong with the keyboard and suggest to contact Dell because your screen gets scratched (they are no scratch removing products, as it's a matte screen)

This happens to me too. It wipes off cleanly so I'm guessing it's just the oil/dirt building up on the pointing stick and transferring to the screen when they're in contact. Hopefully it's not doing any physical damage.

It probably is. For me, if I point the laptop to a source of light when close.. you you can see where the laptop touches, and the pointing stick is far from the screen, even when you apply 2 large university books on it.

thanks for your replies. I also have another keyboard (a backlit one) that I have not installed yet. I had a look at it now and, quite interestingly, the pointstick is slightly lower than the keyboard keys on the backlit keyboard (not installed yet), whereas it is slightly higher on the non backlit one (that is installed at the moment). I have tried to swap the rubber tips between the two keyboards but that does not make any difference.

Admittedly, I have carried my laptop around a few times in a very full bag, so there might have been quite a lot of pressure on the lid.

akranium: how do you wipe your circular little mark off? I didn't manage to remove mine yet.

Ah, I have the backlit keyboard. I suggest that you put it, takes 1min to do so, and you have the awesome power of backlit! :D

I know that SOME people who had the keyboard replaced, the one they received was bent by transport and was doing a curve-up shape instead of a curve-down shape, and bending it gently and not to much, into a curve-down shape solved the problem (and as you can imagine also the large keyboard flex problem). Just something to watch out on your new keyboard. I had my keyboard replaced (the 'E' broke, when I received it the keyboard was shaped correctly.. so no issue for me).

If you don't mind me asking... what's the part number of the backlit keyboard and where did you find it?

    Quick question:

Would I be able to replace the DVD drive on my E6400 with a second harddrive? It comes out as a module, i was hoping I could purchase a special Dell 2.5" harddrive caddie and just flip between the 2 depending what I need.

    Thanks

Yes you can. As you said you need a special module. I don't know if Dell has such a thing... it is something to ask at Dell.
