I almost pulled the trigger on a i5 Latitude E6410 with dock and 24" ultrasharp monitor.

I canceled the order last minute, as i need to know if anyone is aware if this line will be updated in the near future?

The Latitude E6410 was just updated in the last few months so I wouldn't expect anything new in the coming year.

Dell seems to be working on a 15 month product cycle, or at least that's what the one Dell document indicated. Either way, there are periodic hardware changes, such as the downgraded Core i3 base processor and the $30 price increase.

Of course, USB 3.0 is coming, or rather it's already here if you want to pay $352 extra for it on a Precision. Yes, $352 extra for USB 3!

Now, we all know that USB 3.0 will become universal, and ship on each and every unit, from each and every manufacturer, for no extra cost, sometime in the next year or so.

I guess the question is whether you want to wait for USB 3.0?

I think the better question is, do you need a notebook now, or can you wait for later? Some of us tend to succumb to the prospect of better hardware always on the edge of the horizon, and if you continue that cycle, you will always be waiting for the next series of innovations.

I personally believe that hardware has very nearly achieved the state of "good enough", where processing power is sufficient that any further improvements are a bonus, and it's the power savings that are truly the future. If you can live with your current setup, Sandy Bridge is purported to offer considerable power savings with some increase in performance, especially in the form of integrated graphics.

If you want a computer now and the deal is right, I would not expect any regret buying now rather than later. If the greater power savings and improved performance of the future are worth the wait to you, then at least try to set a deadline for yourself so that you do not get stuck in a cycle of technological anticipation.

Personally, I made the jump recently after using an old Inspiron 9300 for over four and a half years, and for me, it was time to upgrade. The difference is night and day when you come from such obsolete hardware, and I was tired of waiting. The question is, are you?

The problem with technology is that newer and better technology is always just around the corner. As several others have said, if you need it, just get it. Unless you compare older and newer technology, it won't make a difference as long as it fits your needs.

If there's a good deal on it, or one with the specs you want pops up in the outlet, I would say go for it. :)

Planned obsolescence....used to be they were always 3 gens ahead of market...what is it now?

But back to poster...I see no reason to wait on that latitude right now....probably next year for a significant update.

    Yea, i hear you guys.

Im currently using an almost 4 year old macbook pro, and due to work, i need to get something that is optimized for windows. yes, i can run windows on the mac, but its brutal on the battery( which is old and not great as it is), and it does run slower than win 7 on my E6400 work laptop.

I really do want something that is quite portable, so il have to decide if sandy bridge is worth the wait, and really is a lot more optimized for portability than Nehalem. il do more research. Thanks.
